A Country Vet Christmas

Rate this book
A heartwarming collection of five brand-new festive stories from favourite Australian authors about country vets, love and small-town Christmas charm.

Snowy Mountains Mistletoe by Alissa Callen
After losing his fiancee, orthopaedic vet Trent has found peace in small town Bundilla. But when a smart-talking city girl goes out of her way to avoid him and all things festive, perhaps this holiday season it's time to give his heart a second chance.

The Countdown to Christmas by Penelope Janu
For small-town vet Amber, Christmas is everything money can't buy. For infuriatingly attractive big-city blow-in Jasper, it's simply a season of commerce. But when Jasper joins the fight to save the town's medical centre - and promises to take Christmas to heart - Amber is forced to take stock. Could Jasper be all her Christmases come at once?

A Cattle Dog for Christmas by Stella Quinn
Travelling vet Elliot comes to Hanrahan as a Christmas locum. If hardworking supermum Sandy had time for a bloke (which she doesn't) she'd be choosing a keeper, not some charming rogue who has a lifelong habit of never sticking around. But a seemingly untrainable cattle dog just might bring them together.

A Country Music Christmas by Lily Malone
No one in the small town of Chalk Hill would know that the new vet in town is actually a famous country music star. Jolene has spent most of her life trying to outrun scandal, but if she keeps running this Christmas, will she lose her chance for love?

A Christmas to Remember by Pamela Cook
When runaway vet Darcy returns to Australia to see her aging parents, she has no intention of staying, but a dangerous fire threatening the town and the strangely charismatic wildlife refuge director Chad have her thinking twice.

Snowy Mountains Mistletoe by Alissa Callen 5 stars

Bundy is back!! Bundy - the dog who's not owned by anyone, but belongs to everyone!

Small town Bundilla was ramping up for Christmas when Aubrey arrived in town from Sydney. Stricken by parvovirus - the human kind - her boss had told her to take two weeks off to recover, so driving to Bundilla, spending time with her good friend Grace and her other half, Rowan, seemed to fit the bill. But she hadn't counted on Trent - and Bundy.

Orthopaedic vet Trent had finally found peace in Bundilla, working the job he loved, after his fiance had died in horrifying circumstances. Although his father continued to want him to move back to the city, Trent refused. He'd bought a block of land on the outskirts of Bundilla and he had big plans for it. When the quilting ladies of the town started their usual matchmaking efforts, Trent fought against them...

An excellent short Christmas story, incorporated into the anthology with four other Aussie authors, Snowy Mountains Mistletoe by Alissa Callen took me back to Bundilla to catch up with old friends, to watch as Bundy wove his magic once again :)

The Countdown to Christmas by Penelope Janu 4 stars

Amber Churchill had been a ballerina from a young age; a professional from thirteen until injury stopped her career at nineteen. Now twenty nine, she was a vet in the small town of Wattle Creek in NSW, and didn't talk about her past. Well liked, Amber loved her work with animals and collected any number of strays. So when a young man, obviously injured and needing help, arrived at her door, she gave him assistance as they waited for the doctor to arrive.

While Jasper was recovering, he helped the town in their quest to save the medical centre. He was cynical and a hater of all things Christmas, but Jasper slowly softened as he viewed things through Amber's eyes...

A sweet Christmas romance novella, The Countdown to Christmas by Penelope Janu is the 2nd story in this anthology. Set in rural NSW, not far from Mudgee, it was easy to visualise the country side, and fall in love with the many animals in the story.

A Cattledog for Christmas by Stella Quinn - 4.5 stars

When Josh and Hannah - the local vets - left Hanrahan for their Christmas holidays, receptionist Sandy was left with locum Elliot George, who would fill in for the time they were away. Sandy was a struggling single mum, with three sons, Will twelve, Toby ten and Charlie six, and had no time for men. Her past choices had been abysmal anyway! But when Elliot parked his camper in the paddock behind Sandy's place, and spent time with the boys, plus introduced them to the pup Caddie, she was impressed.

As Charlie fell in love with Caddie, helping with his training, and Will struggled with the burden he held, which had seen him suspended on the last days of school, Sandy's frustration at Will not talking to her, at her financial woes with Christmas on top of them - everything almost became too much. But Elliot calmed them all; but would he stay, or would he move on to the next destination after this stint as locum?

A Cattledog for Christmas by Stella Quinn is a sweet story, although surprisingly, it's not Caddie who is centre of attention - the boys took a place in my heart. Graeme of the Billy Button Cafe was an excellent character, along with a slightly overwhelmed Elliot; and Sandy, who was trying to be strong all the time.

A Country Music Christmas by Lily Malone 5 stars

Jolene had spent her young years singing and playing guitar in her mother's band, but when a heartbreaking scandal hit, Jolene was grateful she'd continued her veterinary science studies. Moving from her home in Queensland to Western Australia and the small town of Chalk Hill as a locum would give her an opportunity to lick her wounds, and find some peace.

Reuben was the son of the postmistress and helped Jo out the first time they met. Gradually they became friends, and then more. But Jo was still wary; constantly on edge and frightened that someone might recognise her, even with the distance being so vast. Christmas was almost on them; Izzy (the vet she replaced for the month) was due to have her baby. Things were going well - until they weren't...

I thoroughly enjoy Lily Malone's writing and was thrilled to see her contribution in this anthology. A Country Music Christmas is a delightful read, and I've heard the same authors are going to be writing another of these for Christmas 2024. I'm looking forward to that! Great, well-relatable characters fill this story, and I enjoyed my trip back to Chalk Hill :)

A Christmas to Remember by Pamela Cook 4.5 stars

Darcy returned home to Australia and the small town of Yarrabee in New South Wales, which had been home before she'd left for overseas. She knew her Da had suffered a stroke and that her Mum was now his carer, but she had no idea how bad he was. Her shock - which she tried to hide - was intense. Her wonderful, beloved Da - reduced to this! Darcy had only planned on staying over Christmas with her parents then heading back overseas. Her training as a vet saw her tending to the large animals - elephants, rhinos - and she hadn't had a lot to do with small domestic animals. But when bushfires threatened the surrounding district, the wildlife refuge a couple of hours out of town, was in danger. Darcy went with Chad, the owner and director, to help out. What followed was the stuff of nightmares...

A Christmas to Remember by Pamela Cook is a tale of hope, familial love and second chances. A delightful Christmas novella which was both heartbreaking and heartwarming. Bushfires in Australia are fierce and can be, and often are, deadly. Set in the same area as the author's book, Blackwattle Lake, it was a wonderful return!

A Country Vet Christmas by the above Aussie authors, is an exceptional anthology of country Australian Christmas tales, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. With each individual rating, the average is 4.6 which I'll round to 5 stars overall. Highly recommended.

With thanks to HarperCollins AU for my ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

Snowy Mountain Mistletoe
Alissa Callen
I want to move to Bundilla, Alissa Callen has taken me back there for another gorgeous romance in the most beautiful of settings with fabulous characters and of course Bundy.
We know Trent the vet in own a most loved characters, enjoying his peaceful life after losing his fiancé in a freak accident, but when Aubrey, arrives for holiday with her friend Grace, the quilt club matchmakers are out in force, together Aubrey and Trent must work together to put a stop to the mistletoe matchmaking, of course this sees them spending so much time together and with Bundy’s help how will it end?
This is such a beautiful story, filled with Christmas cheer it is witty, fun and so heart-warming, I loved it.

The Countdown to Christmas
Penelope Janu
Amber loves her job as a Vet in the small town of Wattle Valley, she has given up a passion she has had since being young but is now loving her life and she adores Christmas so much so that she has a countdown, but when city banker Jasper ends up on her doorstep after an accident, he brings back many memories for Amber and she also discovers that Jasper is not a fan of Christmas, will she be able to convert him?
They met ten years ago and although they never got to know each other then, they have never forgotten each other, but when Jasper learns about the town medical centre’s fight to stay open, he adds his weight to the fight, of course this brings them closer together and they are hard pressed not to fall in love, but will they be able to jump hurdles to get there?
I loved this one so much Penelope Janu has a special voice when it comes to writing rural romance and I loved all of Amber’s strays as much as I loved Amber and Jasper.
This one is sensual, and heartwarming and a must read.

A Cattle Dog for Christmas
Stella Quinn
This is a must read, being back in Hanrahan was fabulous, the Cody’s are off on holiday and we welcome locum Elliot George, bush wanderer and hopefully trainer of blue cattle dog pup Caddie, he is welcomed by vet receptionist Sandy and her three boys, how will this journey turn out?
Sandy has been hurt twice before and is not looking for love, but Elliot is handsome, charming and gets on so well with the boys, could this be the time to take a chance and find love? Elliot has travelled Australia for many years always looking for the right place to settle, will Hanrahan be that place, Sandy is so good in so many ways and the boys are the best, has he found family a place to settle and love and happiness?
This is a brilliant story, it is filled with laughter, emotions and so much more, I loved it from start to finish, and Caddie is the best pup and the best for this family, happy sighs.

A Country Music Christmas
Lily Malone
I do love a bit of country music and while reading this beautiful, moving and emotional story I must say I was humming along to some wonderful country music while getting to know Jolene and Ruben and I did love my visit to Chalk Hill and meeting up with friends.
Jolene is a vet by day and country singer by night she teams up with her mother Dolly and they have been singing for years, but when a photo appears in the media Jolene feels she needs to escape the scandal and taking a locum position in the small town of Chalk Hill in Western Australia is a long way from her home in Queensland, finding love was not on the cards though., but when she meets Ruben her first day her heart may just open up to find the happiness she so deserves.
A fabulous story that is sure to leave any romance reader smiling, as it did me.

A Christmas to Remember
Pamela Cook
This one is a story that will stay with me for a while, moving and filled with emotion and tension, when vet, Darcy arrives home just on Christmas after her father has had a stroke, she plans on not staying long, but returning overseas, but when bushfires rage through and she meets Chad the wildlife refuge director, who knows what will happen.
This is a beautifully told story, I felt all of the tension from the fires and my heart went out to those baby animals that needed rescuing, I was cheering Darcy and Chad on, they went through so much together and they deserved to find happiness and love.
This one shows strength and courage under fire and I loved how they supported each other and opened up, one that is not to be missed, a very moving story.

I was thrilled to receive this book in the mail, these stories are all written by some of my favourite authors and I thoroughly enjoyed every one of them. I love rural romances, I am very fond of animals and I love all of the heroes and heroines in these stories. I do highly recommend that you read this book, it is one that was hard to put down.

Five fabulous country Christmas stories written by five of my most loved Aussie authors.
Each story features a country vet and has an element of romance. I loved that the stories were light on the romance and big on community and rural charm.

All the stories have the main themes of vets, romance and Christmas however each author brings their own style of writing to the mix making each story unique.

I loved revisiting characters from previous books I have read by the authors, especially Trent and Aubrey from Alissa Callen's Snowy Mountains Series and Isabella from Lily Malone's A Country Vet's Holiday.

A Country Vet Christmas is such a treat and at just over 100 pages each story they are all quick, feel good reads with mandatory happy endings that will have you smiling. A must read this Christmas and perfect for giving!

A Country Vet Christmas by Alissa Callen, Penelope Janu, Stella Quinn, Lily Malone and Pamela Cook. (2023).

**Thank you to Harlequin Australia for sending me a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review; published 4 October 2023**

A heartwarming collection of five new festive stories from favourite Australian authors about country vets, love and small-town Christmas charm.
Stories include: Snowy Mountains Mistletoe by Alissa Callen; The Countdown to Christmas by Penelope Janu; A Cattle Dog for Christmas by Stella Quinn; A Country Music Christmas by Lily Malone; A Christmas to Remember by Pamela Cook.

I will openly disclose that I am not a reader who generally enjoys novellas - this book was a surprise in the mail and not something I would have picked up myself purely because it is an anthology. However I am a fan of all of these authors and have really enjoyed books by all of them so I decided to be open minded and settled in for a Christmas vet romance bonanza. I did like it, and it was nice to revisit the towns that other books I've liked have been set in. I stand by my opinion on novellas - I think these stories would have been made really great full-length books where the characters can be fleshed out more and the stories can have a lot more details; 120 pages just isn't enough for me!
Overall: Cute little Australian Christmas romance stories that are easy, quick and feel-good reads.

Five bestselling Australian female authors walk into a bar (or coffee shop).....

..... And decide to join forces to create a splendid anthology of Christmas stories, guaranteed to place you in the festive mood.

(I probably made up the bar/coffee shop bit) 😄

If you've ever read any (or all) their books previously, some townships will feel like coming home. There's an opportunity to greet old friends that are as familiar as our own family, and a chance to make new ones as they each navigate the true meaning of Christmas. Oh, and of course, there's some falling in love to do as well! 💘

Although each contribution is sweet as candy canes, the stand outs were Penelope Janu's 'The Countdown to Christmas' and Stella Quinn's 'A Cattle Dog for Christmas'. They both touched my heart in a way I can't possibly describe.

There's just something so adorable about the animals featured as well. I totally love the idea of having a wombat as a pet just quietly!

Well done ladies!

Thank you Harlequin for sending us a copy to read and review.
Five of our great and talented authors have collaborated and put together a beautiful collection of stories in a Christmas inspired anthology.
Each story is unique and well written.
Some taking us back to towns with characters we already know.
Vets are central characters in all the stories and each has their own backstory that sets the scene.
Furry friends are in abundance and love is in the air as you whiz through the well crafted novellas.
The success of a novella is measured on that feeling of satisfaction at the end of the 100 page story, can it deliver a complete story.
In this case each of our authors passed with flying colours.
This is the perfect read at this time of year as the festive rolls out and should be a must read for those who love the rural romance genre.
The choice of devouring in one session like I did or read as individual stories among other books is so appealing in this anthology style.
Congratulations ladies on this compilation and the team work I can only imagine that ensued.

I have enjoyed stories from each of these authors in the past, and I loved that they have come together to write this Christmas anthology about country vets.

I loved getting back to Bundilla with Alissa Callen.
I loved the small town vibe of each of the stories, each so different, but each having country life and love at the heart of things.

I loved that I could sit down at night afterwork and read a complete story.

Sometimes sweet, sometimes a bit sad, I really enjoyed this book.

A Country Vet Christmas is a wonderful collection of five novellas from five very talented Australian writers.
The characters and plots of each story are relatable, especially for someone who has grown up and loved in a variety of small, and not so small, Western Australian county towns.
Lily Malone's novella, A Country Music Christmas, was especially relatable, as I have visited Albany and Manjimup many times.
Congratulations on compiling such a wonderful collection of Australian writers.

The Christmas season can be emotionally fraught for many people, and this is just the kind of comfort read that they may gravitate to. Five established Australian romance writers present novellas set at Christmas time.

Several return to established settings, and utilise characters from the authors’ other stories. All are set at Christmas time, all feature vets, and all provide the requisite happy ever after.

The novella length does mean that the stories are more compressed. One or two suffered a little from this. Both Callen and Janu’s stories felt a little rushed. I found it particularly hard with Callen’s story to believe that the significant trauma a character carried could be resolved in just a few days.

Stella Quinn’s story was my personal favorite. The perfect blend of light hearted and serious, it also seemed the best paced and the most believable for the internal timeframe. Quinn returns to Hanrahan, the setting of her novels to date. Readers will love meeting familiar fun, quirky characters again.

The novella tells the story of the vet practice receptionist and the locum vet. However, Hanrahan and some of the zesty secondary characters will be big drawcards for many readers too. This felt very grounded, while still delivering a nice shot of wish fulfillment.

Callen’s story also returns to a familiar setting and uses characters that readers of her novels will recognise.

Bundilla is a small country town infested with well meaning, interfering matchmakers. This time they have their sights set on Aubrey and the local vet, Trent. But Aubrey’s a confirmed city girl, just visiting her best friend Grace (a star of an earlier story) while recovering from illness. She doesn’t even like animals much. Surely she could never fall for a country vet?

Malone also revisits a familiar setting and characters. She touches these more lightly than the other two, but still provides readers with a glimpse of what’s happened for some of her characters after their happy ever after. She tells the story of Jolene, who’s hoping to escape a mild social media scandal, and Reuben, who has shadows in his own past.

Janu has written a story which seems independent of her novels, but which features her hallmarks: a badly traumatised heroine and a hero who also has dark secrets; the fact they’ve met many years earlier and shared a bad experience; and a particularly small country town. This may have been the story that suffered the most from the compressed length.

Cook is the only author in this collection who is new to me. She provides a double dose of vet, as Darcy and Chad seek to protect animals during a bushfire crisis. Cook uses the intensity of the experience to offset the short timeframe. This felt like the darkest of the novellas (don’t worry, that’s still not too dark).

This is, in short, a collection of well written, warm romance novellas. They deliver very much what you’d expect. Readers who’ve read the authors’ previous novels may regard these as a particular treat. The length does introduce a touch of shallowness, but most romances don’t exactly plumb the depths anyway. This is a pleasant, largely undemanding, seasonal read.

You gotta love a Christmas anthology and this one has contributions by some of my favourite authors. I love how even though this is a 600+ page book, it never felt like it because each of the stories themselves were so quick and easy to read.

The first one, I know a lot of people are going to be excited about this one (I know I was). If you have read Alissa Callen’s Bundilla series, then you’ll know about Trent, the local vet and Aubrey, the city girl who is friends with Grace (who appeared in a previous book). I am a bit sad that they didn’t get a full length story but it didn’t really matter too much. I really enjoyed this one, it had sweet storyline of Aubrey learning to trust that sometimes, a person is just genuinely good and it isn’t too good to be true. Trent is a dream. Bundy is of course, a big part of this story, as he is with all of the Bundilla novels, he’s got a sixth sense about things and when he picks you, you’re about to be the victim of matchmaking. The ladies in the quilting circle are equal parts irritating but also sweet in a way. They really just do want the best for people and let’s face it, Aubrey was protesting too much. I really enjoyed revisiting Bundilla, it was one of my favourite rural series.

In the second story, Amber is a vet who used to be a ballerina – I know nothing about ballet but I love Tchaikovsky, he’s my favourite composer, so I did love all of the Tchaikovsky references! Amber and Jasper were loosely connected over a decade ago when her older brother played basketball with him. This is everything I love about a romance novella – characters with a past, one of them is injured (always a favourite), a small town that needs a little help to be thriving, a cast of misfit stray animals (you go on building your burrows Fernando!), Christmas loving heroine and a very Christmas skeptic hero…. and chemistry. Love! Bonus points for the cameo.

The third story is also set in a world I am familiar with and features Elliott, a locum vet and Sandy, the practice manager. Sandy is a single mum of three kids and look, I’d be lying if I didn’t see my own kids in two of Sandy’s. Will, the oldest, at almost 13 is definitely quite similar to my oldest and Charlie, the youngest, is also similar to my youngest although mine are older now. But like Charlie, my youngest is easy-going, sweet. I really enjoyed the portrayal of the kids, who are sometimes quite difficult to get right in books and Charlie’s dedication in training Caddie, a young heeler pup, was adorable. This was a very sweet story and I enjoyed being back in Hanrahan. Good to see Graeme again, he was a fave in the book set here that I previously read.

The fourth story, by Lily Malone is also set somewhere very familiar to me – Chalk Hill! Lily has set multiple books here before and it was great to revisit. This one features country music quite heavily, given our heroine’s name is Jolene Loretta Carter! She and her mother do a Dolly Parton and country music themed tribute show but Jo is also a vet and has taken a locum position after a bit of a scandal that made her out to be a villain, rather than the victim she truly was. Jo is trying to hide herself, hide her looks and lay low, scarred by the media coverage of an event she had no control over. She meets Reuben, who is working in the local post office temporarily and although things get off to a bit of a rocky start (Reuben’s attempt to bond with Jo also leads him to be a bit less than truthful with her, which was. a bit of a problem!) I enjoyed the way it panned out, although to be honest, I wouldn’t have minded Jo standing up for herself a little more, I felt like her mother was definitely a bit too overbearing and didn’t think about consequences of her actions on Jo.

The last story is by the only author I’d never actually read prior to this and it was so good so I am definitely going to have to seek out more of her work. All of these stories feel very Australian but the way in which this one deals with the threat of bushfires and the reality of caring for animals, trying to save property, etc, was so blisteringly real and well done. I really enjoyed Chad and Darcy and getting to see all the animals Chad had at his wildlife rescue as well as the struggle of keeping something like that funded and how so much hard work can be put in deadly danger with a directional wind change. I also love a little bit of a surly man so Chad was a bit of a fave.

All of these stories were wonderful and I ate them up in literally a day!

A Country Vet Christmas is one of those anthologies that I love to pull out on rainy days. The five stories are each a perfect length for curling up with a cup of tea and whiling away a few hours. Each story is set in country Australia and each features a vet, but there, the similarities end as each author brings her own touch to her story. I won't comment on each story as that would take forever, but here are my thoughts on the first one.
Snowy Mountains Mistletoe is by Alissa Callen and this one brings readers to the small Snowy Mountains town of Bundilla, where city girl Aubrey Prescott has gone to stay with friends and recover from a bout of parvovirus. Aubrey’s long had a thing for local vet Trent and her feelings are reciprocated though both have fought the attraction because of where they each live. Matchmaking quilting club members and Bundy, a kelpie who has remarkable powers to bring people together all ensure that Aubrey and Trent get their happy ever after. This story is a feel-good rural romance in a setting readers of Alissa Cllan’s books will be familar with. It left me with a smile. Let me assure you that the other four are just as good. My thanks to Harper Collins for the opportunity to read this book.

I really enjoyed all the stories in this anthology. I think I would have to pick A Christmas to Remember as my favourite of the five, but they were all fantastic.

As a vet myself, it was nice to read these stories as well and I think that the intricacies of being a vet used within the stories is pretty accurate of what life can be like as a vet.

'Snowy Mountains Mistletoe' - Not sure why this author gets top billing on the cover of this book. Felt there were better stories. Childish behaviour of the so called city girl and the long suffering vet while she made up her mind. Kind of predictable.

'The Countdown to Christmas' starring Amber, where the story seemed to be more about being an ex-ballet star than being a vet. Most of the chapters started with ballet, or had ballet themes, (it seems the author forgot the theme of the story was supposed to be about vets!) and got lost with all the stupid names of the animals. More like a kids story if you could get past the annoying Amber.

A Cattle Dog for Christmas by Stella Quinn - Single mother Sandy can't seem to find the right man until she meets a travelling vet. It seemed to be a quick ending where you were left hanging and wanting to know what the hell happened.

'A Country Music Christmas' not just about country but about country music, a Christmas tale told well with very some clever names and a feel good ending.

'Christmas to Remember' I enjoyed. There were parts that kept my heart racing as a dangerous fire threatening the wildlife. Brilliantly told.

Yes, I know... I wrote one of the stories in A Country Vet Christmas, but given there are 5 authors and 5 stories, I reckon I'm allowed to read the others for fun and review the book!
My mum's favourite is Stella Quinn's contribution (A Cattle Dog For Christmas)... I *did* say to her: 'Ahem, Mum... am I your favourite daughter author, or not??'
But Mum's inherent honesty will not be swayed. 'I liked yours too, love,' she said... 'but Stella's had children and the dog...'
