Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

It's not just the World Nobles that are the snooty scum of the earth: looks like mostly every nobility shares the same illness. Nobody cares except for them. What a bunch of bastards, and I really do wish Ace'd gotten to punch them out for a bit, but I realize that it would not have turned out well.

Even more than that, it hurts to see Luffy like this. You need to break your main character for a bit to get the Darkest Hour going... but with someone as bright and optimistic and strong as Luffy, it's going to take a lot of breaking. Here we see.

Its pretty much the fallout of the war and we see the different members of the strawhats deal with this in their own way and every thing in this new world is changing and everyone is adjusting to it and we also get an amazing flashback of Luffy and Ace's past and what made them this way to begin with and an amazing focus on Luffy!

sabo's born into a noble family, but he doesn't want to live that life and his parents suck. he was forced back home and found out that his parents adopted a son named stelley. sabo found out that the nobles are going to burn down the gray terminal, where many homeless and poor people were staying. while trying to warn the people, the fire was ignited. in comes dragon.

they became sworn brothers.

ace has conqueror's haki as well. he used it unknowingly to save luffy when they were children.

dadan and crew came to help ace and luffy, but everyone except dadan and ace boarded dragon's ship to escape the gray terminal.

sabo stole a fisherman's ship and set out into sea, but his boat was blasted by a government ship.

ace and dadan made it to luffy. they heard the news about sabo's boat getting destroyed and thinks that sabo is dead.

sabo's letter

Ace, Luffy.. You weren't hurt in the fire, were you? I'm worried about you, but I have faith that you're all right. I feel kind of bad telling you this, but by the time you read this letter, I'll already be out at sea. One thing led to another, and it looks like I'll be setting sail ahead of you guys. As for where I'll go…anywhere outside of this country is fine by me. Once I arrive, I'll get stronger and become a real pirate. Once all three of us have become pirates, with more freedom than anyone in the world, let's meet again someday. Somewhere out there in the wide, open sea, I know I'll see you both again! One more thing, Ace. I wonder which of us is the oldest? It's a bit strange to have two eldest brothers and one younger brother, but this bond is my greatest treasure.

Luffy may still be pretty weak and a bit of a crybaby, but he's our little brother. Looks after him for me.

and he did. ace did look after luffy. but the three brothers have never met after they were separated at a young age. how am i supposed to reconcile with this..

sabo's “death” spurred the two to really live life without regrets and work towards their goals to be pirates and to be stronger.

at age 17, ace set sail to be a pirate first while luffy still had three more years to go. and he finally went on his own journey.

dadan hit garp when he came back to the three brothers' hometown; “you've got lotta nerve showing your face here again”

”Garp-san saw the whole affair happen right in front of him, and still couldn't do a thing to save them. This must be harder on him than any of us!!!”
”No… The one this'll be hardest on..is Luffy. You should know how much he loved that brother of his…”

dadan-san knows.

i'm glad luffy and ace met up before this. it would've been even more devastating if they didn't.

ace and whitebeard are buried beside one another.

luffy feels defeated and weak.

”The Luffy who I remembered, the kid who did nothing but tag along and hide behind my back was nowhere left to be seen. He had found himself a crew of wonderful friends. So no matter what happens, he'll be okay. That's why I felt so relived.”

rayleigh reached the land of women and law just left. he told them what kuma said when he sent the straw hat crew to different places. kuma is actually a leading member of the revolutionary army. he knew he didn't have much time left.

slowly, the rest of the straw hat crew found out that luffy lost his brother.

- usopp: ”If I'm not there for him when he's in pain, how can I call myself his friend?”
- chopper: “I have to find him right away so that I can at least heal his wounds.”
- zoro: “how can i stay put after [you told me what happened to luffy]?”
- nami: “he lost ace right in front of his eyes and i didn't even know any of it was happening. before the pain shatters his heart completely, i have to find him and do whatever i can to help.”
- franky: “i just heard on the news that my captain has been through a terrible ordeal.”
- brook: “this is the most disturbing article indeed… luffy-san, i do hope you are all right..when i think of the pain you must be experiencing, i feel that my heart might break.”
- robin: “luffy…! thank goodness he's all right.”
- sanji: “you've gotta tell me where luffy is now!”

zoro is with mihawk, franky is in vegapunk's territory, robin made contact with dragon's people, ivankov made it back to his island which is where sanji is at.

duval and his crew are protecting thousand sunny at shabondy archipelago.

both garp and sengoku are retiring from active duty. sengoku named aokiji as his successor as fleet admiral.

luffy, rayleigh, and jimbei stole a battleship and sailed a full circle around marineford as a “rite of burial” for ace and whitebeard. he, then, rang the “ox bell” in the middle of the plaza 16 times, scattered flowers, and did a “silent prayer”. proper observance of a tragic event involves only two chimes while 16 meant a declaration of war.

luffy left something in the newspaper article that the straw hat crew understood (except zoro, who probably took a while.)

“It may be painful for now, Luffy! But fight it! Don’t dwell on what you’ve lost! What’s gone is gone forever! Try to remember what you still have!”

The emotional weight in this volume hits fast, and it hits hard. A few early flashback pages rely only on illustrations, and the quiet works. The childhood bond between Luffy, Ace, and Sabo feels both joyful and crushing, and those silent panels say more than any dialogue could. The volume leans into themes of freedom, brotherhood, and the rough way those boys were shaped, and for me it played as a full tribute to the three of them. I did not expect to tear up at Dadan’s scenes, but I did, more than once.

The worldbuilding lands strong here too. The social divide in the Goa Kingdom is laid out with precision, painting a place that looks peaceful from a distance yet hides a ruthless system underneath. Watching the boys grow, train, and scrape their way through the world gives the story a grounded edge. Their bond feels earned. The pacing slips only a bit when the story jumps between different parts of the world.

Readers who enjoy character driven chapters will get a lot out of this volume. It mixes adventure, heartache, and small moments of humor that keep the story from sinking too deep into the heavy parts. Even without going into plot details, I can say the flashbacks add a new layer to the series and make past moments hit harder. For fans of One Piece, this volume is a must read and left me thinking about these three brothers long after I closed the book.

One Piece, Vol. 60 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next ten chapters (585–594) of the on-going manga series.

This tankōbon concludes the Post-War Arc. After Sabo is assumed to have been killed by a Celestial Dragon for being so-called human garbage, Monkey D. Luffy and Portgas D. Ace vow to look out for each other always. With Ace now dead, Luffy believes he has nothing to live for until he remembers that he still has his crew, and makes plans to go return to the archipelago where they were last together.

Silvers Rayleigh, having tracked Luffy down, advises against this as not only would they be defeated again, but the World Government is now after him because of his recent actions. Rayleigh suggests an alternative approach – they go and briefly assault Marine Headquarters, something that becomes a major news story.

The other Straw Hats, having been sent to different parts of the world by Kuma, quickly learn of this and find hidden meaning in Luffy's return.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Eiichirō Oda. For the most part it is written and constructed rather well. The world reels from the death of Whitebeard, causing chaos to ripple all across the Grand Line. While Monkey D. Luffy is struggling to cope with Portgas D. Ace's death and remembers he has something just as important to him – his crew, but finding them now would be pointless as the World's Government has their eyes on him. So, he sends a message to his crew via the most outlandish plan possible – attacking Marine Headquarters.

All in all, One Piece, Vol. 60 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

Luffy's backstory is finished and it ends with tragedy. Ace, Luffy and Sabo's story is a sad one. Touching friendship and their adventures in the Goa Kingdom are so sweet, that it contrasts perfectly with the corruption and horrible state of the world.

Luffy's hurting and his coping with it are done very realistically. Damn, poor Luffy. Another portion of the book is catching up with straw hats and it's really cool to see them, even if it's briefly. Some secrets are revealed and more are hinted at.

Also one of the biggest flex of the book is Rayleigh swimming through the calm belt. Like it's nothing.

I think it is still currently ongoing. The latest chapter of Volume 60 was released last October 2 in English at Manga site. I reeeaaaallllllyyyy love One Piece, more than Naruto and Bleach. One Piece's Monkey D. Luffy really knows how to make me cry. LMAO. I'm such a sissy. Yesterday, me and my boyfriend was watching One Piece Episode 566, I already watched that (also read the manga) so I know what happened there. But there's this line from Luffy saying that he wouldn't let anyone get hurts in Fishman Island to Fukaboshi. And that they we're friends that's why he was helping them. I dunno why, I got teary eyed AGAIN in that scene. My boyfriend was like, "why are you crying?" I said "Cause of Luffy! I get teary whenever he said things like that." And so he was laughing at me. :O

I don't remember how many times I did cry in this anime. Well, okay, I remember. :P One time, when Merry (their old tattered ship) broke down after saving them in Enies Lobby and they had to burn her down. I was crying a lot then. Another one, when Usopp and Luffy had a misunderstanding cause of that thing with Merry.

And when Portgas D. Ace died while saving Luffy from Akainu. :O I was freakin' crying over that, manga AND anime. That's HOW good One Piece is!!! My favorite Shounen Manga of all time!!! Although Naruto did made me cry when Itachi died. ;)

You know, Oda, this kind of emotional manipulation isn't fair. After some 'okay' volumes of Bleach and Naruto, this latest book of One Piece is like a blessing in disguise. It's a huge turning point in this series for everyone involved - a literal start of a brand new era in the age of pirates. Compared with the latest volume of Naruto I read, Oda has done an excellent job of bringing together an increasingly expanding cast with some serious drama and action without getting confusing.

Plus, y'all are gonna want to see what Usopp has been up to since the crew split up. Oh, Usopp. What are we gonna do with you?

Luffy's pov on what had happened to Ace and him in his childhood. Also the tragedy of Sabo and how they reacted. Plus, Luffy recovering and getting an opportunity of a lifetime from Silvers Rayleigh himself. On top of that Dragon and Garp along with the rest of the marines reactions to Luffy still being alive.

I really enjoyed this one because not only do you see Luffy talk to Rayleigh but the speech to him by Jinbe himself was touching. Also seeing what had happened to Sabo when they were kids made me feel sad before and sorry for Ace and Luffy. Plus seeing not only the Strawhats train on their islands they had been sent to but also the Supernovas and what they were doing during the time of the war.

Plus seeing more of Dragon and Garp in this vol was nice.

The epilogue to Marineford arc. An emotional journey through Ace's childhood with Luffy. a new character introduced, and a farewell to an old era.
I liked how Jinbe talked Luffy out of his traumatic loss, reminding him of what he has: his crew.
It was an emotional Volume and the perfect ending to the arc.

So here we are at the final volume of One Piece’s first half. It feels like the volume is doing a bit too much (continuing to show Luffy and Ace’s childhood flashback, expanding on Sabo, showing present day Luffy planning next steps, the World Government doing the same, brief check-ins with the rest of the Straw Hats). As much as I don’t want Oda to drag this out, maybe another volume would have been helpful. But there’s still plenty of good One Piece content here.

Notable parts:
- Somehow Oda Sensei managed to make Luffy’s childhood even more tragic. Plus leave it to Oda to add a new character this late in the series like Sabo and getting you choked up about them.
- Not just the Celestial Dragons but it seems like the rest of the world’s aristocracy is trash I see
- The montage of various allies and enemies post Paramount War confirms that there’s way too many characters at this point but it is still good to see so many minor characters come back.
- Wish we got more on what the other Straw Hats were up to between their previous mini-arcs but still good to see them. Plus my heart melts at their collective urge to get back to Luffy and help him work through his pain. I love this crew.
- I know Jimbei eventually joins the Straw Hats but I like the “non-traditional” way he and Luffy get closer/work up to his inevitable addition.

Overall a solid volume to mark the half way(?) point.

Why does Oda continue to break me like this? This entire arc is getting 5 stars from me. The atmosphere, the pacing, the characters, everything, was top notch. I think this just secured itself a future position in my bookcase, even though it's an almost 100-volume series...
