The Last Eternal #4

A Ranger's Journey: Book Four of the Last Eternal

Rate this book
Death was coming.

That was nothing new, for death had been coming for the wanderer for a long time now.
But this time, it did not just come for him. It came for Dekker and his family, for Clint and the Perishables, and the villagers of Alhs.
Death was coming.
And it was he who had called it.

The enemy who had taken Ranger’s place hunted them, and at his back marched an army of Revenants, creatures who felt no pain, who knew no fear, and so the wanderer and his companions head deeper into the Untamed Lands in search of safe haven.

But whatever else they might be, the Untamed Lands are not safe.
For in the Untamed Lands, nightmares are given flesh, terrors stalk the darkness, and ravenous beasts hunt beneath the sun.

Here, in the Untamed Lands, monsters roam.

But the wanderer has lived more than a century and one of the things he learned was that the worst monsters, the worst evils a man faced were those he brought with him.
Those evils were coming—they had been coming for a long time now.
For the last century he had survived by running, by staying one step ahead.
But the time for running was coming to an end.

After all, a man could not flee from his demons forever. Sooner or later, he must stand and face them.
And so, in the wilds of the Untamed Lands, the eternal wanderer will wander no longer.

He will stand and face his demons.
He will fight.

50% of each chapter is just repeating exposition/context/poetic waxing from previous chapters. But other than that, still pretty entertaining. At this rate tho it feels like it may take 25 books to complete the quest

The abhorrent being that was once the Ranger stalks. Following deep within the narrow chasm. The pursued’s terror heightened, for deadly beasts dwell here. Their hope, the last Eternal, prepares for his stand.

So four books in & still incredible. Familiar themes with a unique oddness & newness to this world. Blown away.

Solid read

A fun journey but not for the Wanderer. If you are a fan of sword and sorcery with a touch of dystopia

It may certainly be construed a compliment when the person regarded as the world's best woodsman, would pursue Ungr, the last Eternal, with an army of revenants. They are creatures more like zombie's than you will ever come across with.
Yes, a dubious honour. But then, Ungr has a large number of people he nevertheless has to try and lead to safety...to a new valley protected from all kinds of assault by means of a magical barrier.
But the road to it is long and they have to go off the track often via some of the most hazardous places ever.
And it is a track only known to one man. a wizard at that too. This wizard detests Eternals and seems to have taken up hating Ungr the most despite never having met him before.
A Ranger's Journey is as suspenseful as any of the preceding three books in the series, if not more so, what with surprising twists and new dangers cropping up like clockwork. Small wonder there is little to no stopping one's reading once you finished the very first paragraph.
Enjoy.

fantastic storytelling

I was apprehensive about continuing this story after the first book, I’m glad I did. Nicely done Sir. I’ll be back for book five. 👍

Ungr, the wanderer, and his small band plus a wizard are still on the move trying to save the small group of survivors. The wizard is unhappy being a part of this quest because he hated the Eternals. With Ranger and his non human army closing in on them, a whole new set of perils and more death is once present. Another masterpiece that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

A journey, like no other…..

Awesome book! Full of excitement, loss and hope. At times there was no other way around the evil, but the author has surprises that I didn’t think existed. Can’t wait for the next book, hoping I comes soon!

Ungr and what is left of the villagers have finally arrived at the Wizard’s refuge, but he is not what they hoped for. Because the Ranger imposter and his army of accursed are hours behind them, the Wizard reluctantly agrees to guide them further to possible safety.

I was surprised and wondered why they didn’t collapse the tunnel behind them in the first place. Would have saved some time and a lot of pain.

Footnote: 1) I have to admit the through this and the previous 2 books I started to skim through some of the repetitive philosophical dialog that dragged the story along.

Fave scenes: the Wizard entertaining the children, Ungr stopping his fall, Ungr helping the young cat and the giant cat’s help.

I'll stop here in the series. It's becoming repetitive, people are running , our protagonist sacrifice himself to protect others and the others really love him and they want him share the burden of danger. That and at the end the race ends with him confronting the antagonist and he wins barely. Ohh the annoying eternals ghosts which are a bunch of crybabies every time and how he is so different from them, convincing the unknown wizard about his empathic abilities. It's stopped being enjoyable for me, the details don't click anymore and I'll not wait for 7 books to get an understanding of what really happened or is happening.

I enjoyed this installment of the series. But why does every author have to use spiders to inspire creepiness and dread? Anyway the long trek through the tunnel and the long climb up the mountain have some nail biting moments. But alongside the anxious anticipation, there is some welcome humor. The wizard of the South can be very annoying, but he slowly cracks his cantankerous visage. But he lets Ungr have some grievous comments about Eternals before that happens. There is less self-loathing by Ungr in this book, so that makes me happy. We are left wondering about the identity of the wizard and what he could mean to the Eternals.

Fun read

After piling through the first three, and now this fourth, I’m still enjoying the journey and not certain where it will lead. I’ve learned how to skim through some of the repetitive parts where Ungr waxes and wanes philosophically like a 16 year old, so it moves quickly. Fun plot, interesting long-term story line development and characters I’m interested in seeing through. Especially the horse.

more than a fantasy novel

What I came to appreciate in these books is not so much the plot which is solid with enough twists to keep things interesting, is the journey of self discovery for the lead character.
The book is funny and full of banter between the lead characters. It is that more than anything else that turns the pages here for me.

Great read

Some book series drag on. This is onto book four and it is as good as the first three with plenty more story to tell. Great read if you are looking for a fantasy series. Reluctant hero, a terrible evil, magic, monsters and more. Reminds me of David Gemmel and David Eddings.

An amazing story of the Wanderer. He’s avoided his demons, but comes a time when you can no longer run. Unfortunately the Demon is coming for others as well. There’s no stopping until you find out how this will all end. Love the series.

This one just didn't feel as page-turning as the others. It took me a while to get through it. I just couldn't stay interested.

More or less, I felt like I was just reading "and then they walked some more...and then some more...and then....some more" in so many words. Over 250 pages of words. I feel like this book could have been condensed into maybe 5 more chapters at the end of the last book and it would have fit right in, ending the last book very nicely. (I felt book 3 was an abrupt end/cliffhanger that didn't make much sense where it ended. It was kind of like.."eh, I don't feel like writing this book anymore so we're going to end it right here.")

Ungr just didn't feel as bad-assery as he was in the first 3 books. The monster fighting scenes just didn't hit it for me.

I'm still totally invested in these books since the first 3 had me hooked. So I can't wait for the next one!

A most engaging series
This has been a wonderful series from start to this fourth book. I am looking forward to the next part of Ungr's journey. To not be so alone as he has been in the first part of this epic should change his outlook quite a bit.

Definitely action packed

Ungr has managed to take out another false Eternal. The villagers are finally safe in their new home. He now has quite a following to take on the rest of the false Eternals.

great read

This was a very good read. I enjoyed the pacing of the story. I hope that the next book will continue to entertain me as much as this book has. I plan to check out some other series by this author as well. It would be great to listen to some of these books in Audible.

The last book in a good series

This was the last book in a really good series. I went on to look at some other books by one of the authors, and it wasn't nearly as good. So, I guess I will keep on looking!

The sense of danger always feels real, the MC plans are always mad and almost impossible to pull off. Very solid single POV writing. Book five is even better but it isn't on GR yet.

A good book in the series

The main character helps his companions and the villagers reach safety. They face the greatest woodsman, and worry about losing everything. Worth the read.

Excellent

I love the way a lonely soul finds freinds in the most hostile of environments. This book is more about relationships than anything else.
