A funny thing happened on the way to the wedding...
Emerald Carlisle knows her father would go to any lengths to stop a wedding between her and her penniless friend Kit Fairfax. Announcing their engagement seems a surefire way of helping Kit raise some cash!
As her father's lawyer, Tom Brodie knows his duty is to buy off the groom and bring the daughter to heel. Unfortunately Emerald is as beautiful as she is charming. She's even managed to get Tom to help her "elope" on the grounds that the easiest way to follow a runaway heiress is to take her where she wants to go! But after spending time with Emmy, Tom soon realizes she could persuade him to take her anywhere...even up the aisle!
Hi, I'm Liz Fielding, and I'm a best selling contemporary romance author with more than 15 million books in print and Katie Fforde wrote, when honouring me with the Romantic Novelists' Association's Outstanding Achievement Award in 2019 said - "Liz Fielding's books, with their warmth, humour and emotion, have charmed millions of readers. She is a true star of the romantic fiction genre..."
And now I've turned to a life of crime with my first cozy mystery. Murder Among the Roses, published on 18 April 2023 - of which Katie Fforde also said, "I was gripped from beginning to end..."
Reading is a big part of my life. I love witty, contemporary romances, not too much sex,, Women's fiction by the likes of Fiona Harper, Julie Cohen, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Jennifer Crusie and Barbara O'Neal. And I love crime fiction that isn't too gory, or focussed on clue hunting, but is big on character.
My best loved series at the moment are the Ruth Galloway series by Elly Griffiths, The Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch and the Libby Sarjeant Mysteries by Lesley Cookman. I've just read the first in the Georgina Drake crime series from Kate Hardy and looking forward to the next.

I read this book yesterday on my new Iphone and when I was really stressed and loved it. It was fun and full of clashes. Emmy was one hell of a chick, resourceful and crafty as hell. The hero is a lawyer who came from nothing and kind of has to get rid of a guy from her life courtesy her father. There is a lot of deception involved and at one point I got annoyed with Emmy but the romance though quick works really well.
This was a charmingly witty romance that was a delight to read. Emerald is often underestimated and having once at 18 made a terrible mistake of the heart, her father fears her impulsive nature will only lead to more heartache. When Emmy announces she's going to marry her starving artist friend, her father jumps and calls his lawyers to pay off the prospective groom. Emmy expected as much but she hadn't gambled on Tom Brodie, the newest hotshot attorney to make partner in the firm to be given the nasty job. Tom instantly recognizes Emmy's craftiness and knows that it will take all of his wits to keep up with her. These two are adorable together! I loved that Tom knew he was a goner and that Emmy had she really tried could have had him wrapped around her little finger. This is a fun, fast read that I thoroughly enjoyed!
Hahaha, this one was quite funny. Once you read it you will understand all. I loved the ending and how joyful you feel after reading this novel. It's definitely one to lighten the spirit.
This is one of those stories that will make you laugh and smile throughout
Tom Brodie has been made partner in a very prestigious law firm he has worked hard to get where is he was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth, but when the other partners are away Tom is called out to help with one of the top clients and is shocked by what he is asked to do he must stop a marriage that appears to be going to happen to Emerald Carlisle Emmy as she is known to most this is going to be a fun journey for Tom and their first meeting will have you laughing out loud.
Emmy Carlisle is trying very hard to outwit her father she is an heiress and her father does a lot to keep tabs on her and stop her from getting into trouble, but when things go wrong right from the beginning of this plan, Emmy's journey is starting to be a very big roller coaster ride of ups and downs and the unwitting Tom Brodie is pulled into it.
This is such a fun fabulous story from start to finish talk about laugh and smile as Emmy and Tom journey across the UK and France falling just a little bit in love along the way there are many scrapes that Tom has to rescue Emmy from, Emmy and Tom are so alive and real you will feel like you are there with them, truly I can highly recommend this one you will not be sorry it will bring you a few hours of total pleasure and keep you smiling tis one is a total joy to read.
I have embarked on a challenge to read all of Liz Fieldings stories and am enjoying them immensely and lucky me I have a lot to catch up on.
This story is a delightful romp from start to finish. Emmy is a sparkling heroine who is never short of ideas and the impulsive panache to carry them out. Tom Brodie is the very opposite of the wayward heiress. He's worked his way up from a very different background with ambition to burn. Someone like Emmy is the last kind of girl he'd be interested in. Until he ends up on a road with with her and discovers that there is a whole lot of woman under the madcap society girl. The road trip takes them across England and France by road, rail and road, involves one stolen and one borrowed vehicle, (a brightly coloured VWBug), damage to a hired car and destruction of another vehicle. A violent storm and a violent passion pretty much round off a very enjoyable journey full of witty dialogue and well drawn characters.
This was great fun! I fell in love with Tom from virtually the first page, and had no doubt Emerald would shake up his world in the most satisfying way. A wonderful, easy, enjoyable read.
I liked this book. It has some laugh out loud moments to it. A rich man summons an attorney to his home to have him find the man who is planning to marry his daughter to buy him off. He doesn't feel this man is marrying his daughter for more than the money. The daughter is marrying for a far different reason than love, but you don't find out the real reason unil the end. The attorney sees the daughter dangling from a drain pipe while talking to the man who is not usually his client and he says nothing. The daughter hides in his car and before he knows it he ends up taking her with him to France because he feels if he doesn't go with her he won't be able to find out where the meet up with the fiance is scheduled. The daughter keeps trying to excape him, she wantes to get to the fiance before he does. He ends up falling for the girl as much as he fights it. How does she feel. Well you'll just have to read, Eloping with Emmy!
Here is the description of the book as found here on Good Reads: Hot shot legal eagle, Tom Brodie, has been landed with an assignment to test any man to his limits - do whatever it takes to prevent headstrong heiress Emerald Carlisle from marrying a fortune-hunter. He is not happy about it, and when Emmy stows away in his car, his day goes from bad to worse, but since she's the only one who knows where to find the man in question he has no choice but take her along for the ride.
It's a bumpy one!
Emmy is not a woman to sit back and let things fall as they will. She has a plan and she keeps Brodie on his toes in a rollercoaster chase across the UK and France. He's more than up to the challenge, but falling in love with Emmy along the way is always going to end with his heart in pieces
Tom Brody, an upcoming young lawyer just made partner in a prestigious and traditional law firm, is called by an important client in the absence of his more senior partner. The client wanted Tom to find out the man whom his daughter wanted to marry and offer him money to go away. This was not Tom's normal duty and he was irritated to find that he couldn't refuse the client.
Emerald Carlisle was locked up in a second storey nursery by her dad to stop her from marrying. She escaped by going down the drainpipe and hid in Tom's car. What will happen when Tom will discover her? Will he take her back to her father to be locked up again? Before Tom could do much, Emmy steals his car and runs away. But Tom is determined to catch up to her.
Tom took her with him to go and talk to her fiancé. The journey to South of France is full of adventure and fun! While on the way to meet her fiancé to get married, Emmy falls in love with Tom. And despite his misgivings about Emmy being a tiresome heiress, Tom is attracted to her. Later he discovers that Emmy is not really engaged. He also finds out that Emmy is a bright, sexy woman with a mind of her own. Her father had seriously misunderstood her.
ELOPING WITH EMMY is full of witty dialogue and funny anecdotes. It was a fun, light read and a good escape. I loved the characters and the growth and progression of romance between them was exquisitely rendered. But then this is expected from the master story-teller Liz Fielding.
I thought this was a cute easy love story but I did have some problems with it. I didn't like that Emmy keeps a secret the whole book that I feel like Tom would have understood, and I also thought they fell in love really fast without it making the much sense, and I didn't like that the sex scene was skipped over haha. But I loved Tom and I loved the ending of the book, and Tom and Emmy's banter was very cute and entertaining, and that combined with their instant attraction to each other made it a little better that they fell in love so quickly. Overall, I enjoyed it and liked that it was just an easy simple love story.
Cute story. Light romance. Quick read. Read it in less than 2 days. Liked the characters and the story moved at a nice pace. Perfect book to read after an intense suspense thriller. Nice "fluffy" read.
I immensely enjoyed reading this book. It was hilarious. Emmy is a delightful heroine, with a mind of her own and a lot of mischief. Nothing deters her from her goal. The day he meets her, Tom doesn't know what hit him. His life turns upside down & will never return to normal again.
Cute book!!!! I admit to being in a reading slump when I started this book, but as soon as I started getting into I found myself so lost in the pages that I was half way done by that time. This was a good book to re-start my engines for reading.
I loved this book and couldn't put it down. The author had me in stitches and wiping the tears from my eyes. She hooked me from the start. What more can I say? If you like a funny and touching romance, this book is sure to entertain. I'm definitely going to read more of Liz Fielding's books.
So far this book set has been more hits than misses for me, but I figured since this is the last one, I might as well (especially now my expectations are now set).
This book was actually fairly fun to read... until the conflict peaked.
Quite an odd, original little story. I enjoyed that cat and mouse dynamic, and I was kept hanging on till pretty much the end wondering wtf Emmy was up to so I can't say it was predictable that's for sure. Was nice to visit the south of France too, some old haunts of mine that I enjoyed seeing here.
This book just really is not my style. I had a hard time reading it and considered not finishing it. The characters, and the sex roles, in this book were disturbing to me. The couple really didn't have much reason to like each other except for physical attractiveness, charm, and spunk. The couple spent most of the time arguing or with her sneaking off, over and over--and over. It got old fast. The entire book could have been set in the 1950s and the characterization would not need to be changed. The ebook cover is tacky with Emerald's red hair a color that cannot occur in nature, which is slicked down to her head for maximum ugliness. I read the free Amazon ebook edition.
Put together a rich and pampered heroine with a mind of her own and a no-nonsense 'I had to work for all I have' lawyer and you can expect fireworks. Ms Fielding doesn't disappoint and she confines them to a trip together where the sparks fly. This is well written and engaging and a romance I would recommend to all lovers of modern romance.
I really liked this book. The characters were great and easy to fall in love with. The end wrapped up a bit quick, but it was a great quick fun read. If you loved movies like 27 dresses you Will Love this Book!!!
Really well written and quite fun, but dated. The secret was so unbelievable and ultimately uneccessary. The heroine was sadly just too overblown. I She would have worked if this had been set in the 1930s.
