a clear action plan for teaching spelling. Designed for effective, stress-free teaching, the series progresses in a logical, sequential order. Through Direct Instruction, students learn exactly what they need to know in order to spell well.
I really like this approach to learning to spell. We've used a few other spelling programs and this is my favorite. It involves learning to spell in a logical way and pairs nicely with the All About Reading program. I have now switched all my kids to this program. We quuckly have moved through the early levels with my older kids, slowing as we get to their correct level and are going slower with young kids who are begining their spelling instruction woth this program. While this may not be necessary to start with level 1 for older kids, I have found it has been good to review (even if quickly) the rules and whys behind spelling helping to strengthen their spelling skills (and who doesn't like the accomplishment of finishing a school book super quickly because you mastered it!). My oldest (5th grade mentioned she wishes she had used this program from the start since it makes so much sense how words are ordered and rules are taught).
I think the main issue with this program for us was that we started too late. It seems like a great program for teaching spelling from the beginning. Where we are (fourth grade), it was much simpler to lapse into—again—a more natural approach to spelling. In other words, do occasional dictations or copy work and correct his spelling. We also had someone identify some phonetic issues with his reading, so we moved to a phonics system, which is also a way of learning spelling. (And reading itself is another way to learn spelling.) I like the organization of this system, which makes it easy to teach and mildly interesting for the kids. I would recommend to a family starting at a younger age and who wants to directly teach spelling.
