Three horrific stories of crop-killing fungal outbreaks, ancient sources of sustenance, and a ravishing hunger for which there is no cure.
"The Last Slaughter" by Douglas Ford "Cat Food" by Holly Rae Garcia "Rock of Ages" by Rebecca Rowland
- Intro by R.J. Joseph -
"Being constantly hungry can make a person desperate. These three authors explore what horrors could transpire in a society where everyone is hungry all the time - an all too real possibility given the climate crisis the world is grappling with." -Bev Vincent, author of Stephen King: A Complete Exploration of His Work, Life, and Influences.
Holly Rae Garcia is the author of Flesh Communion and Other Stories, Parachute, Come Join the Murder and The Easton Falls Massacre: Bigfoot’s Revenge (co-written with her husband and fellow author, Ryan Prentice Garcia). Her shorter fiction has been published online and in print for various magazines and anthologies. Holly is a member of the Alliance of Independent Authors.
She lives on the Texas Coast with her husband, three dogs, and two birds. You can often find her reading, watching horror movies, or playing poker.
TABLE FOR 3 is a Charity Anthology to benefit Texas food banks. Consisting of three disparate novellas, TABLE FOR 3 spins the kaleidoscope of perspective and gives us three different views of Hunger.
"The Last Slaughter" by Douglas Ford is set in what appears to be a near-future Apocalyptic era, in which too many long years of drought have rendered Hunger a widespread phenomenon, and only a precious few do well for themselves. One such, the evil scion of a once-prosperous meatpacking empire, has an ace as it were, inherited and maintained only for that family's benefit. Although his secret is something older than time, far preceding the first people, that isn't nearly as evil as some of the humans in this story. Caution: sensitive readers may be perturbed by certain aspects of this novella, which includes gore, violence, death of livestock and humans, sexual assault and predation.
"Cat Food " by Holly Rae Garcia: This story will be really disturbing for Amimal Lovers [yes, me] but the premise is really compelling, and both the premise and the way it worked out, in terms of people's response and the government's attempt to quell the problem were quite realistic. [We've all had a too-recent journey through something slightly similar.] Here, there isn't a readily available solution, such as a vaccine; there doesn't seem to be a solution at all, this side of Death. Gory, violent, but compelling.
"Rock of Ages" by Rebecca Rowland: There are some stories where the Unhappy Ending is almost fated, brought on not so much by the Supernatural or Otherworldly, but by simple human failings: greed, illogic, envy, lust--any one of a number of faults. The point is that the failing isn't stopped or circumvented; but like an untended Rollercoaster, it races to an inevitable, very unhappy, end. Yes, it starts with a misstep of Nature (toxic Fungus) but humans manage to destroy all on their own. And that ending: That Ending!!!
I know we have all lived through the Coronavirus Pandemic (any who have not are TOO young to be reading this Anthology) and so we've all experienced supply chain shortages and lack. However, reading these stories, Hunger has become so deeply vivified for me, in so many ways, I shall not ever view it as before. I hope I've gained more empathy for those who are already suffering malnutrition and food shortages, wherever geographically.
The Last Slaughter - a delightful combination of anger, jealousy, freshly harvested hearts, and sacrifices lovingly crafted by Chef Douglas Ford
Cat Food - this culinary delicacy will leave you desiring to see what you just ate all over again. Chef Holly Rae Garcia has put together a daring recipe that will have the hungriest appetites pushing their plates away.
Rock of Ages - Your final course is sure to leave you satisfied. Chef Rebecca Rowland has prepared a feast of characters and emotions that will leave you thinking about it long after your last swallow. Be careful with this one, a book hangover is guaranteed, so make sure you have a ride home from the restaurant.
A horror anthology, a feast of terrors, that will have you hungry for more.
Many thanks to Holly Rae Garcia for the ARC.
I didn't read any descriptions regarding the stories. I went in blind. Each tale involves hunger. I'll leave it at that.
These three stories really pack a punch and are not for everyone, especially the squeamish. Each of them are brutal in their own way. Hauntingly brutal.
It's quite the achievement to see such different narratives spun over a single theme. Each author truly brings a new perspective to hunger, starvation, and desperation. Which got me thinking: many of us may know what hunger feels like but how many of us know starvation?
On top of all of that the proceeds of the book go to charity.
I received this ARC from the lovely Holly Rae Garcia. If I had to sum up this anthology in one word it would be disgusting. I mean this with the most respect and admiration, of course! The three tales that comprise this anthology consist of truly terrifying imaginings of life during a food shortage. Each story explores a unique situation in which life and death depend on obtaining sustenance at all costs (read: usually someone or something losing its life in a gruesome manner and then being consumed). What is perhaps most frightening is that this concept hits close to home, especially after coming out of a pandemic where we were all too familiar with empty store shelves and supply chain issues. While it’s unlikely anyone will be raiding animal shelters for dead cats and dogs (Cat Food - Holly Rae Garcia), making human sacrifices to appease a demon who promises to bring abundance (The Last Slaughter - Douglas Ford), or slicing up their boyfriend in order to satiate an unbearable hunger (Rock of Ages - Rebecca Rowland), it definitely gives the reader much food for thought.

I received an ARC of ‘Table for 3’ from Holly Rae Garcia on Books of Horror Freview, and, frankly, I can’t thank her enough for this. It’s a charity anthology (all proceeds benefit the Houston Food Bank), it releases on June 2nd, and it features three horror novellas from three authors: Douglas Ford, Holly Rae Garcia herself, and Rebecca Rowland (in that order.) These names should be enough to draw anyone’s attention, anyone who has some inkling of high-quality horror, that is; even so, I at least hadn’t realized how good this would be!
The anthology’s theme is food shortage and hunger to the point of starvation. Such themes are usually found in the extreme horror genre, where the usual suspects make their appearance: cannibalism, gore, and graphic situations aiming to make the reader lose their appetite. Here, indeed, you’ll encounter gore aplenty and you’ll squirm, especially with Holly Rae Garcia’s story (I was given the tip to avoid eating while reading it!) but gore is not the point of the collection. I’d better insist on this, since many people will probably worry that the novellas may be too gruesome and too graphic and the theme connecting them too disgusting, revolting, etc. Yes, all of this is true, yet, unlike some extreme horror writers, the authors of ‘Table for 3’ have chosen to focus on story: fully cognizant of the horrific aspects of the situations they describe, they eschew humor (the easy way out for almost all extreme horror writers today) and prefer to soberly explore the resilience of the human spirit, the dramatic journeys of flawed characters, and the painful reality of hunger, loss, and trauma.
If you prefer the mythical and the poetic, go for Douglas Ford’s "The Last Slaughter"; if you want body horror, gore, and penetrating prose, read Holly Rae Garcia’s “Cat Food”; and if human relationships, wonderful imagery, and cunning allegory is your thing, pick Rebecca Rowland’s "Rock of Ages." A personal note before closing: I won’t be surprised if the Garcia story appears on ‘Best Of’ anthologies; all stories deserve a mention, but ‘Cat Food’ alone is worth the price of admission.
Table for 3 is an anthology that will not only scare you, but make you think. The three novellas in this collection each dissects hunger in a different way, and each one is compelling, freaky, and thought provoking. In "The Last Slaughter" Douglas Ford explores themes of ancient religion and blood sacrifice in the context of a modern starving population. In "Cat Food" Holly Rae Garcia leads us to ponder just how far we'd be willing to go in order to survive in a world where food is scarce and a terrible virus is taking over. "Rock of Ages" by Rebecca Rowland delves into the chaos of a national food shortage due to infected crops, and the terrible acts that ensue. Fans of horror will love the blood, gore, the twists and turns, and the genuine thrill of reading these stories. What makes these tales truly frightening is the uncomfortable resemblance to reality, but what makes them even more worthwhile is all profits go to a Texas foodbank. Amazing!
I authored one of these novellas (The Last Slaughter), so my review focuses solely on Cat Food by Holly Rae Garcia and Rock of Ages by Rebecca Rowland, two glimpses into the horrors of hunger and the lengths that people will go to when denied sustenance. Cat Food begins with what appears to be mischief, but as Holly adds more layer to her compact and swiftly moving narrative, the level of human desperation becomes apparent. Holly builds everything skillfully and deftly, and at times, it feels (in the best possible way) that we are riding a bus that is slowly careening toward an unthinkable disaster. And then it does, in a devastating conclusion (and damn, it is indeed devastating), the kind we have come to expect from a Holly Rae Garcia story. Up next comes Rock of Ages, and here Rebecca builds an irresistible sense of mystery with a narrative that hints at the importance of past while careening toward an unimaginable future. Here, the horrors involve people who instead of enjoying the prime of their lives find their relationships disrupted by a national crisis that leaves them--and everyone around them--hungry and desperate. I love how Rebecca builds tension in everything she writes, and here she does just that in her usual masterful way. A book that offers you these two novellas is worth the cost alone, but you can also feel good about the fact that your dollars go toward fighting real life hunger. Highly recommended!
Table for Three is a charitable anthology featuring three delectably devious stories by three acclaimed horror authors. Edited by Holly Rae Garcia, with cover art and a story also by Holly Rae, sales from this anthology are to benefit the Houston,Texas Food Bank. I received an Advanced Reader’s Copy so I could share the news with all of you!
Douglas Ford wrote the first, stark entry in this feast of famine. “The Last Slaughter” brings an oppressed atmosphere in a small town where one family holds all of the power. Pork. Yet there’s a dark secret to the success, one an angry young potential relative is determined to sniff out. This story had a creepy, folk horror feel.
Holly Rae Garcia’s “Cat Food” sees a community desperate for protein after a fungal infection eliminates all the livestock. Two enterprising young men enact a dangerous plan - with deadly consequences. Be prepared to fear for the little family in this!
Rebecca Rowland wrote “Rock of Ages” with an interesting, psychologically charged parallel story where college kids endure a debilitating food shortage. With some powerful imagery, this story will also stick with readers.
Fair warning. None of these stories are for the weak-of-stomach. However, if you’re seeking a full plate of the horrors of starvation, pre-order Table for Three from Easton Falls Publishing, which is to hit shelves on 2 June, 2023.
The three stories in TABLE FOR 3 are deeply unsettling, twisted, and will make you think. What extremes would you go to in order to satiate your hunger? How desperate do you think you would be? And just where is the line between holding on to your humanity and turning completely feral? All three stories approach food scarcity and hunger from different angles: folk/religious horror, body horror + animals, fungal outbreaks, cannibalism and... something else entirely that I do not think there is even a word for! You think you will know where each story is going, but you are going to be pleasantly and horrifically surprised with the turning of each page. Each story packs a brutally devastating punch.
We as horror fans are given a humble reminder to be thankful for what we do have each day... and all proceeds to benefit the Houston Food Bank.
Pick this one up and you might shock yourself how quickly it can be devoured.
All three stories were extremely different from each other. However, they all dealt with the Human Condition in this crazy world. They were all well written with believable characters. The stories are moderately extremely. I recommend this book to everyone. Bonus points you are helping people.
A dystopian, horror filled look at the ensuing deprivation of one of the most fundamental of basic needs - food.
Wow! This anthology of three novellas turned my stomach! Did I love it? Hell yes!
The Last Slaughter by Douglas Ford, Cat Food by Holly Rae Garcia, and Rock of Ages by Rebecca Rowland. All three are harrowing, all three are gross, and all three make you pray to god that nothing like that is in our future!
An outstanding ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 stars from me and I can highly recommend.
All proceeds go to the Houston Food Bank.
Thank you to Holly Rae Garcia for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Table for 3 benefits a worthy cause—food insecurity--but it’s also a delicious sample platter of three indie horror authors. I’m honored to have been asked to compose a story for this trio of tales, especially since it follows such stellar entries from Douglas Ford and Holly Rae Garcia. As Ford’s “The Last Slaughter” opens, an unspeakable crime is committed on Linda Teecar; years later, its apparent result comes to collect the debt owed. However, an altruistic act turns the story on its head as an unusual prisoner reveals herself to be much more than she appears. The author’s sly dark humor is on full display here (“How many licks does it take?”), and I am HERE for it. In Garcia’s “Cat Food,” Jason knows that it’s tough to keep food on the table: why waste a perfectly good source of protein when there's an abundance of abandoned pets at the local shelter? Soon, however, Jason learns why his newly discovered food supply had been left untapped for so long. The author managed to stab all of my tender points with this one, and I was delightfully nauseated for quite some time after. The final tale in the collection, “Rock of Ages,” is mine. It was inspired by my own alcohol-saturated, nicotine-fueled experiences when I shared a Fitchburg, MA apartment with three pretty amazing people in my early twenties. It also reveals my unhealthy adoration for Def Leppard. Do with that what you will. I am proud to call Douglas Ford and Holly Rae Garcia friends; we get along like gangbusters, and there are few people in the horror fiction business I adore as much as them. Our styles and approaches to food horror are vastly different in this project, so you are GUARANTEED to find something you love among our three tales. And for goodness sakes, 100% of royalties go to feed hungry people: it’s a win-win.
If you're asking yourself, who could concoct such a project about the horrors of hunger? Well then, it should come as no surprise that all 3 authors of this dark anthology recently tore up the scene as they tore through history as part of the bloodthirsty American Cannibal collection, cooked up by Rebecca Rowland. Only this time around, Holly Rae Garcia has taken the seat at the head of the table.
First up, Douglas Ford's starter, 'The Last Slaughter', is the Creepshow segment you wish they would've made. This bloody rural nightmare was a fantastic opener. Next, Holly's nail-biting 'Cat Food' gave me 28 Days Later vibes, and so much more. It was just ruthless on-the-edge-of-your-seat-ness. And last, but certainly not least, Rebecca's 'Rock of Ages' hits the pit of your stomach early and slow burns there through a mounting despair reminiscent of recent harder times until it boils over into a sickening finale.
It's one thing, a great thing, to put together an anthology for charity, but it is another to give up stories of this quality for the cause. And that's exactly what we have here with Table for 3, a great book for a great cause.
That the proceeds from sales are being donated to The Houston Food Bank is what drew me to this anthology. This was my first time reading food-related horror. I don't have a favorite story, I liked them all equally, and I encourage you to give this collection a read.
1) Folk horror. Climate change is the reason the land is barren and food is scarce. Until a mysterious girl is rescued from being held captive in a barn with strange symbols on its exterior.
2) Body horror. A lethal zoonotic virus has killed all wild and domestic animals eaten as food. There's an abundance of euthanized pets at animal shelters, but eating them is illegal in case they are asymptomatic vectors. But the consequences of ingestion are so much worse.
3) Psychological horror. A fungus that destroys crops and contaminates meat and dairy is responsible for the food shortage. A shelter in place order is issued, chaos ensues, and people resort to eating whomever they can get their mouths on.
Thank you to Holly Rae Garcia for providing me an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Table for 3 is a collection of three novellas that will fill you with unease, dread, and hunger while also emptying you of any hope you may have had for these poor characters.
If I was starving and needed to choose a favorite here in order to get something to eat, I wouldn’t be able to pick! Each story was so uniquely terrifying while staying tied together in the fear of going hungry.
Eat something before diving into this book because while these stories will make you suddenly realize you’re feeling pangs of hunger, you’ll also be filled with other feelings that aren’t exactly conducive to eating.
Horror fans, this one is going to absolutely blow you away. Happy reading!
Table For 3 is not as brutal as some other horror in terms of extremity, but it is brutal in terms of humanity and the way that humanity falls apart as food scarcity and hunger takes over. These three stories are as powerful as they are disturbing and will make you think well after reading. And it's a charity anthology book, so you're helping people too. Highly recommended. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I have been waiting for this book to come. It was worth the wait. Each story has a different take on hunger in America. It doesn't have a lot of gore .But it doesn't need it. I LOVED all 3 stories
