21 books38 followersTapan Raychaudhuri (8 May 1926– 26 November 2014) was an Indian historian specialising in British Indian history, Indian economic history and the History of Bengal.
He was a student of Ballygunge Government High School, Calcutta and Barisal Zilla School, Scottish Church College, Calcutta, where he completed his I.A. and finally Presidency College, Calcutta, where he completed his B.A. (Hons.) in history with a high first class. He completed his first D.Phil. in history at Calcutta University under the supervision of Sir Jadunath Sarkar and his second D.Phil. at Balliol College, Oxford under the supervision of Dr. C.C. Davies.
He started his career as a lecturer at the Department of Islamic History and Culture, Calcutta University. After his return from Britain he became a deputy director of the National Archives of India. He was a reader and then professor of history and director of the Delhi School of Economics and also of the department of history of Delhi University.
He was first a reader in Modern South Asian History and then professor of Indian History and Civilization and fellow of St. Antony's College, Oxford from 1973-93. He was an emeritus fellow of St. Antony's College, Oxford after retirement. He became a national research professor in India in 2010
Awards:
1. Watumull Prize awarded by the American Historical Association, 1982. (jointly with Irfan Habib) for the Cambridge Economic History of India.
2. Doctor of Letters 1993, University of Oxford.
3. Doctor of Letters honoris causa by the University of Calcutta.
4. Doctor of Letters honoris causa by the University of Burdwan.
5. Padma Bhushan in 2007 in recognition to his contributions to history.

তপন রায়চৌধুরীর দুটি অনবদ্য স্মৃতিকথা যাঁরা পড়েছেন, তাঁরা জানেন এই ইতিহাসবিদের কলমের জাদুর কথা। মোগল আমলের খানাপিনাসহ নীরদ সি চৌধুরী, রামমোহন রায়, সুভাষচন্দ্র ও সত্যজিৎসহ অনেক রথী-মহারথীদের নিয়ে লিখেছেন রায়চৌধুরী। সাম্প্রদায়িকতা নিয়ে সোচ্চার ছিলেন। তবে বাঙালি হিন্দুর সাম্প্রদায়িকতার চাইতে বাঙালি মুসলমানের সম্প্রদায়প্রীতি নিয়ে ব্যবচ্ছেদ করতে তার বেশি উৎসাহ দেখেছি। বাঙালি মুসলমান পাঠক হিসেবে তার সকল বিশ্লেষণের সাথে একমত হতে পারিনি। ক্ষেত্রবিশেষে একচোখামি লেগেছে। কিন্তু তপন রায়চৌধুরীর পাণ্ডিত্যপূর্ণ লেখার বিষয়বস্তুগত প্রাচুর্যের কারণে মুগ্ধ হয়েছি।
স্মৃতিকথার রায়চৌধুরীকে এই বইতে পাবেন না। লেখনশৈলীতে এখানে তিনি পাক্কা আ্যকাডেমিশিয়ান। তাই তাঁর কলমের আদি ও অকৃত্রিম স্বাদ বঞ্চিত হয়ে খানিকটা ক্ষুণ্ণ হয়েছি বৈকি৷
স্মৃতিকথার রায়চৌধুরীকে এই বইতে পাবেন না। লেখনশৈলীতে এখানে তিনি পাক্কা আ্যকাডেমিশিয়ান। তাই তাঁর কলমের আদি ও অকৃত্রিম স্বাদ বঞ্চিত হয়ে খানিকটা ক্ষুণ্ণ হয়েছি বৈকি৷

বাঙালনামার বৈঠকী চাল, সূক্ষ্ম হিউমার এই বইতে পাওয়া যাবে না। অবশ্য প্রবন্ধে ওত রস আশা করাটাও ঠিক নয়। তদসত্ত্বেও, তপন বাবুর লেখা খুবই প্রাঞ্জল এবং উপভোগ্য।
বইয়ের ত্রিশটি প্রবন্ধের বেশিরভাগই গ্রন্থ-আলোচনা, দুটো সুভাষিত বক্তৃতার লেখিত রূপ এবং কিছু কাছের মানুষের স্মৃতিচারণও আছে। ভারতবর্ষের ইতিহাস এবং সাম্প্রদায়িকতা নিয়ে লেখা প্রবন্ধগুলো বেশি ভালো লেগেছে, তবে কিছু কিছু ক্ষেত্রে একপাক্ষিক বক্তব্য রয়েছে।
তপন রায়চৌধুরী বাংলায় এত কম লেখলেন কেন কে জানে! অবশ্য, পাঁড় অ্যাকাডেমিক মানুষের থেকে যে এইসব “আউট” অফ সিলেবাস জিনিসপত্র কিছুমাত্র বেরিয়েছে অঙ্গুলির ফাঁক গলে এই তো অনেক! লাস্ট বাট নট দ্যা লিস্ট, বইটার প্রচ্ছদ টা খুবই সুন্দর! কপাল ভালো হওয়ায় রকমারির সেলে বইটা কিনতে পেরেছিলাম, নাইলে আনন্দ জুয়েলার্সের মালে হাত ছোঁয়ানোর মত অবস্থাও এখন আর নেই।

বাংলা ও বাঙালি সম্পর্কে অনেক কিছু জানা যায় প্রবন্ধ গুলি পড়ে। লেখকের সব মতামতের সাথে হয়তো পাঠক একমত হবেন না, তবে লেখনীর মুন্সিয়ানা যে অনন্য সাধারণ সে বিষয়ে সকল পাঠকই একমত হবেন।
