Ray Douglas Bradbury was an American author and screenwriter. One of the most celebrated 20th-century American writers, he worked in a variety of genres, including fantasy, science fiction, horror, mystery, and realistic fiction.

Bradbury is best known for his novel Fahrenheit 451 (1953) and his short-story collections The Martian Chronicles (1950), The Illustrated Man (1951), and The October Country (1955). Other notable works include the coming of age novel Dandelion Wine (1957), the dark fantasy Something Wicked This Way Comes (1962) and the fictionalized memoir Green Shadows, White Whale (1992). He also wrote and consulted on screenplays and television scripts, including Moby Dick and It Came from Outer Space. Many of his works were adapted into television and film productions as well as comic books. Bradbury also wrote poetry which has been published in several collections, such as They Have Not Seen the Stars (2001).

The New York Times called Bradbury "An author whose fanciful imagination, poetic prose, and mature understanding of human character have won him an international reputation" and "the writer most responsible for bringing modern science fiction into the literary mainstream".

I really like a lot of Ray Bradbury’s books but this collection of short stories are his very early works and were less enjoyable

I enjoyed reading the stories. The only one that really stood out in my mind was Lorelei of the Red Mist with Leigh Brackett. The rest of the stories were good, but I enjoyed that one the most. A criminal has his mind swapped with a Conan like character and has to outwit the evil female mastermind of an invasion. It had drama, romance, revenge and a character that grew to someone I liked by the end of the story.

A good selection of stories

This was actually a group of Ray Bradbury stories I've never read before. I've only read his collections before. These were from magazines. There were a few with similar themes to what I've read before, but I enjoyed them very much.

Bought on a whim from the Kindle library for the princely sum of £0.75p; a bargain by anyone's reckoning.

The Monster Maker and Morgue Ship read as being a little dated, but maybe that's confirmation bias on my part - as the title page gave the date they were published! These stories were written when Bradbury was in his early twenties. There was one story here that was unreadable (shall remain nameless). I'm pleased to say that by the end of the book 'Asleep in Armageddon' and 'A little journey' saw the great man reach his stride in authoring some great science fiction.

Overall, I have to say, I was a little underwhelmed by Bradbury's writing here (I feel somewhat ashamed to admit that of one of the science fiction's literary greats!), but I'm going to let that slide, for as mentioned previously; this is a catalogue of his earliest work.
