Welcome to Elemental Academy, where magic collides with mayhem beyond the portal!
Alya Reed has long decided that searching for her biological parents was more important than going to college. But when she received an admission letter from the Elemental Academy she never heard of, she has to choose between that or going to prison.
Obviously Alya chooses the Academy, only to learn that she's been entering into a lifelong prison. But when the academy opened doors for her to find her parents, she has to do everything in her power to get claimed by an element to remain at the Academy. Turns out, it's more challenging than she had anticipated.
Amidst the growing occurrences of alien monsters in the cities, no on suspected that even the academy, with all its security measures is in any danger, not until the danger knocked on the door.
Alya desperately need to bond with an element before the end of the term, or risk getting kicked out of the academy. Will her heroic actions to protect the academy from the monsters, guarantee her place at the academy.
I got an advanced reader copy from BookSirens (thanks so much to the author and the website for it), but it wasn't my cup of tea once I started reading. I saw many similarities to Harry Potter, until it started being mentioned several times and I kept seeing more similarities.
I understand the author was inspired by it but there wasn't need to be so obvious about it. Also, the plot couldn't keep me entertained enough to keep reading. That doesn't mean the story isn't good or anything like that, it's just the book isn't for me and it wasn't what I was expecting from it.
I received an advanced copy to provide an unbiased review. Conflicted is the first book in a new series and I look forward to reading the next. The heroine is interesting and relatable. There is plenty of action to keep the book moving and mysteries to keep you reading. I can't wait til the next book to see if my theory is right.
It’s always really fun to read books set in magical schools. The setting provides built-in world building in a way that doesn’t bog the reader down. There are lots of interesting things about the world in this book and it will be interesting to see how they unfold
I really enjoyed that the main character was able to talk to animals, it brought some levity to the story, mainly in the form of grumpy cat Riordan
I also liked to read about the ‘houses’ of the different elements and it will be interesting to see how it affects the character relationships as the series goes on
I do wish we got to see more of the budding romance in this book. I can absolutely see that there will be more as the books progress, but I was hoping for a bit more tension/buildup. Don’t get me wrong, I love a slow burn and I’m sure the payoff will be great, but I was in the mood for some swoony romance.
First books in a fantasy series are often tricky because they need to establish world building and set the stage for future books. This book did start off a little slow but picked up in the second half and did a good job setting up the next book.
If you’re looking for a book set in a magical school, give this one a try!
I received an advanced copy for free and am reviewing it voluntarily
A frustrating book, because the author is good at writing and this could have been good, but it was so poorly plotted out, and the main character ends up doing nothing.
An obvious Harry Potter port, only with a girl MC, who is in abusive foster care, and she is good at fighting (for the first two chapters). After this she gets beat up all he time. She is arrested for beating up the foster father who was about to rape her, and the police are abusive, until they find her Hogwarts letter (oops, I meant Elemental Academy). Oh, and Hogwartsist a college and she is 18. And there are various tracks, like being a scrub after college, or the magic FBI, or going Elite. And there is a guy who is handsome and smarter than Hermione and the bestest fighter ever. And will be elite. But he is always rude to the MC. Except it is annoying and goes nowhere.
Oh, and instead of a sorting hat there are sorting tests after the first semester, and each house is a magic type. And if you have more than one type of magic the government murders you. Wut? So they are the bad guys?
Oh, and the MC suspects her parents may have been magic, so she really really wants to find out, and tried to break into the computers to find out, only to find out they use paper, so Dumbledore (who is woman here) says she will research for the MC if she stays in school. This plot is promptly dropped. Oh, and instead of just snakes, MC can talk to all animals. For literally no reason at all she hides this even when it would be handy.
And she never puts forth the slightest effort to learn or grow in any way. Or to research her unique and very special powers, because poor quality plotting.
I received an ARC of this book to give an unbiased opinion and I am beyond happy for that opportunity! I really loved this book and I'm looking forward for the next one! It has a lot of similarities to Harry Potter. So if you loved HP you will love this book! Ayla Reed is an orphan. She's 17 and is part of the foster system. She is passed from one foster family to the next. She's looking out for the day she turns 18 to leave the family she's currently in. Her foster dad is abusive (please check the trigger warnings before you read it). A couple days before her 18th birthday she gets in trouble and has to go to the Academy for Elementals. She doesn't know why she got in that academy because she has no knowledge of elemental magic in her bloodline, what is a criterion to be admitted.
This book got me in a choke hold and I can't wait for the next one. After Ayla arrives at the academy it was a bit confusing because I got a lot of information of elemental magic and everything going on but after a bit it got very exciting and addictive. I like the writing and the story is captivating. I really enjoyed it and am looking forward for the next book.
Who says that portals are mere fantasy? This academy teaches a classed called Portal *Science*, that’s proof enough for me! One of the first topics is that of illegal portals. The teacher and students discuss the benefits, creation, dangers, and oversight of as well as the reasons for & against (similar to the role of the black market). Pretty cool and gets the young’uns to start thinking!
Another matter that this academy addressed is that of career options. Students are informed that their primary duty as Elementals ‘is to safeguard Earth along with the life on it.’ Post-graduation paths can include working in agriculture, engineering, and healing – even government (e.g. investigations or disaster prevention). Can you think if an appropriate job for someone with ‘a strong affinity for hospitals and chaos’ such as Alya? Well, let’s make sure that she graduates first… Looking forward to seeing what’s on her next report card!
Alya Reed is an orphan who is searching for answers about her parents, when she gets an admittance letter to the Elemental Academy, a prestigious school for witches to learn their elemental magic. Rather than go to jail, she decides to go to the Academy. Her elemental training is not going as planned, but Alya is on the right track to find her parents when the school is attacked by aliens!
I enjoyed this book. It's the first in a new series by the author and it got me hooked! While there is a strong influence from the Harry Potter series, A.R. Nitus has carved out their own world in the magical realm. I really like how the author allows us to learn about the new magical world as Alya is discovering it for herself. It keeps the book from being weighed down by too much back story. I can't wait for the next book!
I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Conflicted is the first book in a new series that had everything I love: ✔️ academic environment ✔️ orphaned mc ✔️ Hagrid-like groundskeeper ✔️ portal fantasy ✔️ enemies to lovers
This had so much potential but fell kind of flat for me. The plot captivated me, but I didn't connect well with the characters and found myself speeding to the end. The ending was really anticlimactic for me including the surprise at the end.
I think this world has so much promise and I'm excited to see where the author goes with it, but I think the first book could have been longer and more time devoted to strengthen the character development.
This book is very aptly named because a lot of what goes on in it is conflicted . The story is engaging and the main characters are well constructed but there is to much secrecy and not enough explaining to suit the needs of the book. The world building blocks are there but not enough is passed along to both the reader and the main character to really fulfill the demands of the story. Thus we feel left out of what appears to be a well crafted plot. The details and methods of the elemental bloodlines and powers are mentioned but not explained and a school that specializes in training the future members of the most powerful group on earth seems to be more interested in secrecy than fulfilling its mandate. There are also a lot of minor characters that aren't fleshed out to the point it is hard to keep track of who they are and what they are there for. The action scenes are well done and actually have a strong influence on the story but the intent of the scenes is murky at times. Hopefully the rest of the series will answer all of these points or at least some of them in the next book. It would also be very helpful to get a prequel that provides the details from a more knowledgeable viewpoint (the elite academy or the history of the war with the outside forces).
This book Conflicted was absolutely amazing the first book of the Elemental Academy series it was OMG! It was a page turner of suspense and mystery of paranormal world of abilities. I really enjoyed this since it was my first time reading and it was great. I couldn't even imagine of put it down as I was on the edge of my seat. I was hooked on all the characters it was a fast- burn of romance between human and monster with a lot of magic in the mix. It was many secrets surround the academy . I highly recommend this book and you won't be disappointed. I received advance reader of this book via Bookfunnel and am voluntarily leaving my honest review. Trina Jones
I’m conflicted on this book. There’s a lot of promise and I can see where the author was going, but I think as a first in a series, there was too much background noise and the main plot didn’t shine as much as I’d expect it to. Some side characters had too much of a role, while others not enough. In a first of a series, I’d expect every character addition to be purposeful and I’m not sure I saw that in 1/3 of the characters so far. Maybe that will change in continuing series additions.

While I did like reading the book, it's not one I will ever read again. I just couldn't get too into it. The main character annoyed me so much. I think this one just wasn't for me. The author's writing is good, with no typos that popped out at me. It had an ending, but it's the start of a series. Even though it's an elemental magic book, there's not many magic scenes. If you like angsty, teen academy stories, you will probably like it. It just wasn't for me. I did get this as a freebie, but the opinions are my own.
3.5/5 stars. I liked the concept of the book I think more than the implementation of it. That’s not to say that it’s a poorly written book, not at all. It just has a bit too much teen angst for me. The magic is cool I wish there was more of that, but perhaps that will come in future books. It’s a good start to a series. I’m not sure if I will read further. I may give book two a try to see how things develop. I received a copy via StoryOrigin the opinion expressed are my own and given voluntarily.
Conflicted is book 1 in the Elemental Academy by A R Nitus. I think that this fantasy/thriller is fabulous. Alya is an excellent main character and I felt that the author told her background and built the story perfectly. Aaron is intertwined with Alya and I can't wait to see what happens to them in the next book. I believe that Elemental Academy will be an excellent series that is a must read for fantasy fans. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
It is a good read good story background but took me a while to get into. I wish there was more background information about elementals and how they came to be. I was confused about everything nothing was really explained. I know it was from the point of view of someone new to the world but still some more background would have been nice. I hope in the next book you find out more and maybe a little more about Arron Song and his connection to Alya.

I'm confused with this book while reading it I was hooked but not hooked at the same time. I felt like it was all over the place and didn't really go into depth, I would've liked to read about more of the experience of the character in between chapters instead of just giving repeated definitions and examples on the powers and the enemy. I'm interested in reading the next book just to see if it gets any better.
Wonderful Story! This was a great mixture of talent, born abilities from parents, and then there is just luck... or not! Learning to work with elements, when you have no idea what your family history is, makes things very hard to learn and know. The best part of this book, to me, was her ability to talk and hear animals, both good and bad stuff. Thank you, A.R. NITUS for a wonderful story! I received a complimentary copy of this story and this is my honest review.
Very magical read. Arya's journey is complicated. She is a strong character and fights her way through the obstacles presented in her path. I aslo enjoyed Aaron "Mr grumpy pants ". I thought this book was well written and the characters are wonderful. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. I have a strong feeling it will be as good as this one. This is my first book from this author and I look forward to reading more of her books. Happy reading everyone
I received this book from a Goodreads giveaway, and all opinions are my own.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The FMC is strong and determined while also very aware of her personal pitfalls. She also went into her situation pretty blindly, so while there wasn’t a ton of world-building, it worked to give both the narrator and the reader have the same questions and confusion about the world she finds herself in. Overall a solid, fresh start to a series full of intriguing secrets.
An interesting world and school of magic. To be conflicted is to have no direct affinity to a specific element. This could lead to expulsion from the academy and elimination from the program. Alya has a connection to both earth and to fire. Also, greatly frowned upon as it implies a fusion of genes from parents of differing elements. How she will deal with those concerns is for a future volume to describe.
Elementals in Earth are of 5 types, similar to Aang, the last Airbender. The types are not allowed to marry other types as it can make them create what is known as fusions, but with aliens using portals from another world to destroy and take elementals power, it certainly takes a few ideas and transforms them into an interesting read. Cliffhanger at the end. I have my suspicions.
3.75 STARS Not a bad first in the series, Conflicted is a wee bit Harry Potterish but slanted a bit more to a slightly older audience. Good YA reading with a plethora of characters that are not too difficult to follow. Nicely written, satisfactory ambiance for the genre and all-in-all a satisfying read. I received a free ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I don't understand all the reviews I've read because this book was fantastic! Sure it had similarities to the Harry Potter Wizarding World, but thats what made it so great! I can't wait to see what happens next. The plot did take a few chapters to get me addicted but like all thinks good things comes to those who wait! :)
All she wants is to find her parents so she will try to find them. She gets into trouble and she is given a choice jail or a mysterious academy. She does what is the best and chooses the academy where she makes friends quickly. What is the academy? Will she find out? Will she find her parents? See if she will find the answers she needs
I read this to see if it would be right for me but it's really not my cup of tea. It is a good read for those that are into the college young adult type story, which has never really been my thing.
If you like young adult/ college check this out. Just because it wasn't for me doesn't mean that someone else wouldn't find it interesting.
I’m not sure how to pronounce her name but I like that she doesn’t let People walk all over her. The first 5 pages absolutely should have had a content warning (near sexual abuse, foster care, and corrupt/unkind police).
I felt conflicted reading this book the epilogue definitely confused me a little bit.
The world building took a bit for me to grasp. Still not sure I fully understand the elements.
Yes, this book will leave you conflicted. The storyline is good, however, the MC is all over the place with an ending that has you wondering which cliff hanger are you supposed to want to follow. My favorite character was grumpy cat Riordan. Not sure if I will continue the series.
This is an easy to read fantasy with an interesting plot and characters. There’s quite a bit of action and a gripping ending that promises more to come. I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway for this honest review.
