Super useful as a basic intro. Having participated in room painting (and some furniture painting) as a child, this both reminds me of things I saw my parents do but didn't know the reason for (now with bonus reasons!) and answers questions I wouldn't have thought to ask. I really appreciate the side-by-side comparisons of recommended vs bad equipment, and that some quantitative measures of how to tell quality from crappy paint are provided. Also invaluable to a first time homeowner is the discussion of what types of paint (and what types of finishes) you'll want to put on different surfaces.

A variety of more advanced techniques are covered, but for me from a room painting perspective, the coverage of these techniques just re-enforces that I don't want to bother with doing them. However, if in the future I find myself painting smaller objects like furniture, there certainly are techniques included that I may want to try.

I've given it four out of five stars because it doesn't quite meet my needs: it focuses more on complex techniques than on tips and tricks to do the basics as efficiently and easily as possible, and it doesn't provide any insight into my biggest question of the moment, which is how to choose a color for a space (what should be considered, basic design tips, how much + where to swatch before deciding to paint, etc). It also doesn't discuss if paints that claim the primer is built in and therefore not required are actually legit, which is another burning question of mine.
