Michael Morley is a former TV producer and director, and is currently a senior executive director for Endemol TV. He has produced a number of award-winning documentaries. Viper is his second novel, following Spider which introduced Jack King. He lives in Derbyshire.

The book cover promises a terrifying & relentless paced thriller that will have you hooked - & it certainly fulfilled it's promises!

I'm not usually keen on profiler novels or indeed those that cross continents but this has proved an exception. The short paragraphs & economic writing style keep things moving & help create the feeling of things going at a fast pace. The ending kept me on tenterhooks as I couldn't fathom out which way things would go.

I really don't want to add yet another series to my must read list (I'm way behind on the dozen or so I follow as it is!) but if I happen across another by this author, I'll be snapping it up for sure :o)

Zusammenfassung:
Die Jagd auf den sogenannten Black-River-Killer hätte den Profiler Jack King fast das Leben gekostet. Jetzt lebt er mit seiner Familie in der Toskana und führt dort ein kleines Hotel. Fernab seines einst so geliebten Jobs, will er noch einmal ganz von vorne beginnen. Doch viel Zeit ist ihm nicht vergönnt. Schon bald wird ganz in Jacks Nähe eine Frau bestialisch ermordet. Ein Mord, wie ihn auch der Black-River-Killer begehen würde. Und ehe sich Jack versieht, bittet ihn auch schon die italienische Polizei um Hilfe. Was Jack nicht weiß - der Killer ist ihm inzwischen näher als je zuvor ...

Fazit:
Hier haben wir also wieder einmal einen absoluten SUB-Hüter, wenn man so will. Mehr als zweieinhalb Jahre hat das Buch auf meinem SUB vor sich hingedöst, ehe ich mich endlich erbarmt und es gelesen habe. Und es war ganz okay, würde ich sagen. Nett. Unterhaltsam. Okay, einfach. Nichts Besonderes und leider auch nicht annähernd so spannend, wie es hätte sein können. Dennoch solide, würde ich sagen. Richtig gestört hat mich nur, dass ich einfach keinen Draht zu Jack King bekommen habe. Er ließ mich einfach kalt und ich habe keine Ahnung wieso. Von daher ...

Kitabı okurken ara vermek zorunda kaldım birkaç ay kadarcık ;) O yüzden pek de dikkate almayın yorumu. E o zaman neden yorum yapıyorsun diyorsanız (haklısınız), baktım yorum falan yok biraz konuya değinip merakınızı giderebilirim.
Jack King, Black River Katili (BRK)davasına zamanında bakmış, ama katili yakalayamamış. Üstelik bu dava yüzünden hastalanmış. Karısı ve oğluyla otel işletmeye başlamış. Tabiki katil geri dönüp neredeyse kusursuz bir planla onu olayların içine dahil ediyor, çok öncesine dayalı bir olayın intikamını almak için.Katille ilgili delil arama aşamasında çok sıkıldım nedense. Katil de şu insan görünüşlü psikopatlardan, kimsenin şüphelenmediği tiplerden. Kendisine Örümcek, öldürdükleri bayanlara da Şeker diyor. İnsan bunca zaman ve bu şekilde kin tutar mı? Sanırım okuduklarımın kurgu olduğunu daha sık hatırlatmalıyım kendime. Neyse sonlara doğru iyiydi.Sadece Bay Jack bana biraz duygusuz geldi. Isınamadım :P Son sayfalarda yazar bir katille yaptığı görüşmeyi de anlatmış. O daha çok ilgimi çekti desem...

I loved this novel, it's my kind of story. Fast read, short paragraph, the economy of words,makes it snappy, interesting, and movie-like. The ending was one the most unexpected I read in a long time. If you like edge of your seat suspense, don't look any further, this Spider will catch you in it's web.

Dimmi che non sei mai stato in Italia senza dirmi che non sei mai stato in Italia. Seriamente, che nomi hanno i personaggi italiani? L'ispettrice Orsetta Portinari, per esempio. Orsetta. Chi ha consigliato l'autore? Quante donne conoscete che si chiamano Orsetta? O il coordinatore delle indagini Benito Patrizio? Me lo immagino con la testa rasata e un'uniforme di orbace. Italian sounding a livelli impareggiabili.
Quella dell'assassino psicopatico mi sembra spesso una scelta di comodo: un personaggio che uccide solo per il gusto di farlo solleva l'autore dalla fatica di inventare un movente sensato e sviluppare la storia con un minimo di coerenza.
Per far funzionare il romanzo sono perciò quanto mai indispensabili personaggi ben sviluppati, descrizioni approfondite delle indagini e tanta atmosfera. Purtroppo in questo libro non ho trovato molto di tutto ciò. Abbondano in compenso elementi macabri o inquietanti, che sembrano tentativi di ravvivare una narrazione troppo piatta.
Ultima osservazione: perché così tanti thriller hanno quegli irritanti capitoli lunghi solo una pagina o due? Non creano tensione, spezzano solo il ritmo che già di suo scarseggia.

Ik kwam in het begin erg moeilijk in het boek, dit omdat er boven elk nieuw hoofdstuk andere personages en plaatsen voor kwamen. Na een tijd begon ik er aan te wennen en wordt de verhaallijn veel duidelijker omdat dan de puzzelstukjes in elkaar passen. De personages worden goed in beeld gebracht en het verhaal komt sterk over.

Ik heb soms met moeite gelezen maar toen ik er eenmaal inzat kon ik het boek niet meer wegleggen. Ben blij dat ik het boek niet heb opgegeven maar ben door gegaan. Want wat is het een goed boek een erg sterk realistisch verhaal. Hij speelt goed en kwaad sterk tegen elkaar uit.

Ik heb er van genoten en de twist op het einde zag ik niet aankomen. Je wordt beet genomen als je denkt dat je weet wie de dader is blijkt het niet te kloppen.

‘We need to move on’. No, seriously, we really do. Yes, you expect a crime novel to have some police procedure in them but not page upon page. I was going to originally give this four stars, but found large parts so boring that I nearly gave up, so down graded to three. I’m sure you could have removed about 200 pages that where not necessary, and just kept repeating itself, to keep the pace up,and my attention. (I took it to work to read on break and nearly fell asleep at the table!) My mum read it first and insisted I ‘stick with it, the endings worth it’. Was it worth it? Yes, but have lots of patience, plenty of coffee and don’t feel bad about skimming if you have to.

Plot summary: Jack King, expert criminal profiler, has left the US and his former life to run a hotel in Tuscany, Italy. But his former life won't leave him alone. Jack gets drawn into an investigation in Italy and then his nemesis, the Black River Killer, starts hunting again back in the US. Jack cannot turn his back on this one and the killer is making sure he can't, by making it personal.

Review: After two attempts to deviate from my love of a good crime book, which were both unsuccessful, it was good to get back into a good crime thriller that makes you just want to keep turning the pages!

Gran bel giallo, anche se in alcuni punti troppo "crudo".
Le vicende si svolgono tra Italia (Toscana, Roma, Siena, Livorno) e USA.
Quest'alternarsi di scenari fa sì che la tensione non si smorza mai, anzi, quando sembra un attimo più soft il ritmo torna incalzante e coinvolgente.
Adrenalina a mille, personaggi ben descritti, anche se alcuni forse troppo stereotipati, però nel complesso un thriller con tutti i crismi per essere definito tale.
Forse il finale lievemente affrettato anche se per nulla scontato.
Scrittura molto fluida e scorrevole.
Consigliato.

Çok fazla stereotype içeriyor. Dedektife takık seri katil, hep benzer yaşlardaki kadınları öldüren katil, çözemediği olaya takılı kalmış dedektif vs vs vs. Hikaye yüzeysel. Tek orjinal yanı İtalya'ya doğru genişleyen bir seri katil. Boş zaman geçirmek için sadece...

What a thriller! Really enjoyed this. Liked the way it was written too. Short chapters, going back and forth between the characters. Definitely kept you on your toes. Face paced and a must read for those who like a good old crime thriller.
