The cake cookbook genre has very stiff competition and there are some really really great cookbooks out there. That said, i enjoyed this cookbook. It has a useful approach which is to offer examples and variations of the various types of cakes but then to focus on cakes for specific occasions, like young child's birthday, teens birthday, adult birthday, valentines day, dinner party cakes etc. there is even a section on cakes for animals (my dog loved that one!). In the process of taking this approach you are taught both a lot about cakes, cake design and toppings. Worth reading.

Many of the pictures looked very unprofessional, which underwhelmed the recipes (why would I put my time and ingredients into a cake that will turn out looking like that?)
Many of the recipes were for desserts other than cakes (brownies/ cookies / doughnuts). When I pick up a 150 cake recipes I would like cake recipes

Had the recipes matched up with their respective pictures and had there been a picture of each recipe it would have redeemed the mixed up layout.
And on top off all that the recipes did not strike me as special or spectacular.

Starts with a lot of reading - details about baking and size and such. From vanilla to chocolate, with veggie or fruit or nut, for everyday and special occasions, even includes cheese cake and ice cream cakes. Special ones for babies and pets. Some categories don't have many types.
