I am now reading this book for the third time and it’s better each time as my own awareness of Florida increases. It’s also become a model for at least two other books on Florida, Rory Maclean’s Next Exit Magic Kingdom and the just released In the Land of Good Living by Kent Russell.
Randomly picked this up from my work book sale- a nice travelogue of Florida from the mid-70's with a eye towards both the natural history and the stories of the different characters the author encounters in his ramblings around the state. It's obviously pretty dated now, but it's interesting nonetheless in reflecting on what Florida looked like to an outsider at the time and how it was developing then. The author's musings on the flora and fauna are particularly pleasant.
