《二鍋水》 was one of the novels in my to-be-read list that I have been meaning to read but always postpone. I was supposed to read 《真香》 first, also written by the same author, but the novel has been taken off JJWXC. And so decided to choose this as my next read since I have been interested in it anyway.
After reading Cold Sands, my heart has been so heavy, and in a need for healing. Choosing 《二鍋水》 as my next read was indeed the right choice. I knew it was an HE novel right from the beginning, but I didn’t expect the novel to bring solace and a sense of happiness to my heart when I reached the end of the story. I was able to have a dreamless slumber afterwards.
The novel isn’t listed on Novel Updates yet. I read it in its original language because no fan translator has picked this up yet. I hope someone would. The novel’s plot would definitely be a hit for English Danmei readers. Just the “pseudoincest” tag would be able to pique the readers’ interest.
Much like most pseudoincest stories, the story commenced in a really cliché manner, with two broken families joined together through matrimony. But unlike most, the brothers lived separately from the parents and that was how the story between the two brothers started.
The pace may be slow, but the intricate detailing, such as standing by the door, gently petting the cat, or reaching for a cup on the counter, were portrayed vividly. It was as if every moment was intricately painted, making it easy to envision in my mind. Even the smut scenes were so clear that my face turned read while reading. The smut scenes faded to black though, but it would be roughly explained afterwards. No uncensored smut from JJWXC, ofcourse. I will have to do a reread with the Traditional Chinese physical copy once I receive mine.
The novel’s narrative was written with abrupt transitions though, like the sudden leaping from one scene to the next, and it took me aback. One moment, they're on the sofa, and suddenly, it's the next day—a whimsical storytelling approach. The narrative was confusing at first, but I got used to it after a few instances.
The interaction between the two brothers were truly interesting. Their banters never failed to make me laugh. Retaining the subtleties of their humor might be challenging when translated, given the intricacies involved, so I really hope a really good translator could pick this up. The emotional impact in my heart, brought by my previous read, has been mended because of it; and I hope it could do the same for others. Humor can indeed be a powerful remedy in storytelling.
There was not much angst in the novel, mostly just tension. I love the tension of the novel, like pulling a string taut, fragile yet durable. The contrast was amazing. The story was quite realistic and touching. It brought me to a new perspective when it comes to same-sex relationships. The author incorporated life lessons and meaningful quotes in the novel. There was one scene with the mother that was touching and for the first time in a novel, I was moved to tears. Truly fascinating.
I tried my best not to write any spoilers in my review and focused mostly on the emotional impact I experienced while reading, so despite not being able to give a straightforward overview of the story, I hope my review would still be able to convince readers to give 《二鍋水》 a read.
