Our most profound experiences of God often come when we least expect in the moments of our lives when something outside the ordinary confronts us. What we learn in these moments?about ourselves and about God?can be learned in no other way. These moments offer insight not otherwise available to us, gifts we would not otherwise receive, peace we would not otherwise know. In these accidental journeys with God?these moments of greatest vulnerability?we experience the rare glimpses of God?s love and grace that remind us that every moment of our living and dying is embraced by God?s presence and purpose. These moments shape our living and believing for the rest of our lives. In this volume, Roberta Bondi reflects upon one such accidental journey with God and shows us how to pay attention to how God uses these moments for our good.
This was a very quick read. The narrative moves quickly and easily from an fun afternoon outing too a difficult all night walk through the forested shoreline. While Bondi tells this story she reminisces about some of life's hard knocks as well as her work as a scholar of the church Abbas and Ammas of the ancient church (desert fathers).
Quotes:
"They were not only telling me who God was as they insisted on the centrality of love in the Christian life, they were training me as a human being made in the image of God." p. 109
"Teach your mouth to say that which you have in your heart." Abba Poemen p. 111
Another excellent book by Roberta Bondi, though I would recommend "Ordinary Time" or "Memories of God" over this one. Bondi has a real gift for taking an experience, a story, or a memory, and then exegeting it with theology, church history, and spiritual disciplines. Her ability to connect the personal and theological is remarkable.
