“Marriage is not a noun; it’s a verb. It isn’t something you get. It’s something you do. It’s the way you love your partner every day.” –Barbara De Angelis

Rating: soft-porn wrapped up in a brightly colored package called a Pride and Prejudice story. That was the only similarity as many scenes were just crude and unnecessary. What was the point? They were not romantic and certainly not enticing. This author took the reader places no one should go. I assume the title is suggesting that there was only one way or solution for the Bennet family and their problems.

“The secret of a happy marriage is finding the right person. You know they’re right if you love to be with them all the time.” –Julia Child

Was this a forced marriage scenario or a marriage of convenience? Perhaps both. Somewhere, between the porn scenes, I encountered characters using Austen’s names. There were no physical similarities to the Darcy and Elizabeth that we know and love from canon. Elizabeth was this tiny, waifish, child-sized, twenty-something-year-old. Nothing was sexy about that and it bordered on creepy. Darcy was a younger version of the hero we know and love and his attributes were not conducive to her tiny stature. His behavior can only be classed as frat house during rush week. There was nothing sexy about a strutting bull in a china shop, insensitive to the needs of his virgin bride. Later we had him pouting because he thought he wasn’t getting any that night. I’m sorry, this was just wrong.

Supporting Characters: The Colonel was not honorable. Charles was a wimp and wasn’t willing to fight for the prize he only thought he wanted. Jane was a jilt and her actions put her sisters’ reputations in question. Lydia was a slut and didn’t care what anyone thought. Wickham was himself. Mrs. Bennet was a demanding, self-centered, greedy, self-absorbed, she-devil. Mary, Kitty, and Georgiana were pretty much themselves… with room for improvement.

There were strange scenes that I just didn’t understand. One, in particular, was when Darcy was sick and feverish… I didn’t get it.

I’m not recommending this. If you think you can handle it… go for it. Just read the reviews.

This is an explicit book. You have been warned. It is Pride & Prejudice Porn, Lizzy & Darcy's Joy Of Sex. NSFW, strictly X rated. This may be a Pride and Prejudice variation for dudes, because there is little description of Darcy but endless detail of Lizzy. There are few likeable characters in this book.

Beginning at Rosings with Darcy's proposal & Lizzy's refusal, minus any mention of George Wickham. Then Lizzy learns that Mr. Bennet has been killed in a carriage accident and she heads for London via post coach. Darcy intercepts her and he and Col. Fitzwilliam accompany her to the Gardniners on Gracechurch street. Darcy meets with Mr. Gardiner and explains that he and Lizzy are engaged and his detailed plans to take care of her sisters and mother. The Gardiners both explain to Lizzy that this is her best offer and she may as well take it. So she agrees and it is off to Longbourn.

Mrs. Bennet is more excited that Lizzy's marriage saves her from the hedgerows, than she is grieving her husband of 20+ years; which causes a a further rift with Lizzy. She encourages Lizzy to anticipate her vows to seal the deal with Darcy. Mrs. Bennet is cruel and hateful to Lizzy ignoring that Darcy was the savior of the family.

This variation of Darcy is not the man of anyone's dreams. He is randy, arrogant, insanely jealous, imperious, whiny and sometimes cruel. Once Jane meets Col. Fitzwilliam she becomes less enamored with Bingley and strings both men along for a while. And Lizzy is described as tiny, child-like and flat chested.

There is regular drama as well. Darcy falls ill with pneumonia and his survival is less than certain.

The following is hidden for adult content & spoilers

It feels like the author really hates the characters and wants them to be as unpleasant as possible. Additionally there are editing problems in one scene towards the end Lizzy, Darcy and Bingley are standing together while Lizzy and Georgiana are 100 feet away.

There is no one to who I would recommend this book.

I read this book a long time ago and for some reason have no review for it. I love some of Wegner's work and this is one of those books I really like to revisit. Darcy in this book has his normal arrogance at moments but so sweet in other spots. Darcy makes his disastrous proposal but unlike the Darcy we know prior this one is willing to fight for his Lizzy. What a great idea! I loved his possessiveness and strong, unrelenting will to claim her as his wife. When misfortune hits Elizabeth she is forced to rush back to Mr. and Mrs. Gardner. Collins has already began to take measures to claim his birth right.

Darcy's only thought is doing whatever it takes to make Lizzy his. He's interesting in this one to me. He has so many layers to peel back. I rooted for him in his attempt to convince Lizzy how devoted he is to her. Like oil in water these two were. Lizzy is determined to hate him still under the belief of his ill treatment of Wickham and what he did to her sister. But there is so much more. I felt compassion for him in his many attempts to help her see they were meant to be. It is the Gardner's who convince her to listen and talk with him. Her position would put her in a place to save her families circumstances. It is that that convinces her that she take a second look. This is similar to the scenario in her other book," Apprehension and Desire." I found several situations that you could compare the two books. They were similar but so very different.

In A&D it had a softer feel, IMO, because in this one Darcy has a mistress of a year. Annette is in love with Darcy and when he tells her they are through she does not handle it well. He also admits to being with 10 other woman before Elizabeth. I wasn't sure that set well with me I'll be honest and Lizzy expresses the same feelings. You really feel the difference here as Lizzy in her persistence to learn just how many woman proceeded her he dances around the subject. At this point she throws out," would you not like to know how many men I..." Darcy is quick to respond asking," What men?" She of course is trying to make him see reason in which another side of Darcy comes out. "I would not want you in such a case for a wife, a mistress perhaps, but not a beloved wife,"

As a modern thinking woman it's hard to digest the double standard but don't fret because Darcy had his work cut out for him. I started to side with Lizzy at this stage. I did this throughout the book. Back and forth with who I felt sorrier for. Darcy starts reading really cold and not the Darcy I love because he is forced to confront his ex mistress who sets out to humiliate Lizzy in public. This Darcy literally physically gets a little rough with Annette. I could not see my Darcy behaving and treating any female like this. Mistress or not it painted this ugly image of him. He makes it clear that their contract gave him right to use her body as he seen fit and could treat her less then human when it wasn't being used. It made you look at him like Wickham instead. This was a part of the book I wish was taken out. Because later this Darcy is gone and he is a totally different man. Parts of his upper class mentality would come out at different times but I could believe that.

Lizzy takes all in stride and is not completely innocent herself. She acts as we have saw Lydia behave. Like a spoiled child. Crossing her arms and the like. It happened throughout the book so it's not a one time occurrence. But she also has that fire I like to see. Darcy needed that type of woman to help him be a better man. She slaps and brings him to his knees in agony at one part but when another lady of the ton tries to fluster Lizzy. " Tell me, Mrs. Darcy how can you possibly sleep peacefully at night knowing that your husband was so sought after and desired by the most beautiful, fashionable and accomplished woman of the ton?" To which her retort back was, "You guessed correctly. My nights are far from peaceful; however, the reason for it is quite the opposite of what you imagine. My thoughts and attention during the night are completely taken by my husband-and I assure you, Lady Rockford, it is not his bachelor past which occupies us."

The book is a full length with minor grammar issues, such as words out of order and in one spot Darcy's eyes were," shitting," between Elizabeth and Jane instead of shifting. LOL. Wegner is known for her crudeness and explicit sex scenes so that should not come as a surprise. I would just caution if you do not favor the mistress angle you may not like this one. It doesn't really last long though. Wickham plays his part with Lydia but not much of one, and their ending was an eyebrow raiser. I also enjoyed Jane's story for once. It was a refreshing twist. I get annoyed by her goodness and beauty. It was nice to see that fire side of her that wasn't such a goody too shoe. I just wish we could have seen more with that. I liked Georgianna in this book too. She stands up to her big brother and found her voice as well as getting her man. So, I could not give it a full 5 stars I still will reread this one again. I could not fully support a Darcy that would think of a woman no matter what class in such a depraved and indifferent manner. Enjoy!

Mr. Darcy has quite the sexual past in this book. I enjoyed the story but did find the characters quite altered from cannon. Lots of adult content so beware if that is not your cup of tea.

Pride and Prejudice variation

Steamy reimagining of PnP.

Entered at the Hunsford proposal and ventured immediately off canon as Elizabeth received the news that her father had passed, later in the evening.
Darcy was persistent in his pursuit and Elizabeth's altered situation did nothing to deter him. This Darcy was a little softer than the other portraits of him by Wegner (at least in comparison to the once I have read). Following Elizabeth to London and later Meryton, he eventually wins her heart but not without resistance from Elizabeth and outside obstacles like Anette, his former mistress...
A substantial amount of mush, if not of the titillating sort, was to be had and it felt a little lacking in intrigue outside of the bedroom which felt like the main plot.
It had its funny moments though and I laughed out loud on a couple of occasions.

Enjoyable read

This author is rather inconsistent, which is frustrating- this is one of her better efforts, and if all were of this quality, she would be a favorite. I recommend this book.
Darcy does unexpected things, not least of which is a pre-marital adventure that is worthy of a porno. If your feathers get ruffled over anything that isn’t 100% vanilla, then this book isn’t for you. Now, don’t be shocked when that scene comes up in the book, because you were warned.

This is a soft-core porn or NC-17 version of The Only Way from the same author.

Again beginning with Mr. Darcy's proposal at Rosings and the death of Mr. Bennet in a carriage accident. Lizzy returns to London with Darcy & Col. Fitzwilliam, she agrees to an engagement with Darcy.

They have a longer engagement, again are physical before heir wedding and Darcy is slightly less bossy and less roguish. he is still insanely jealous and somewhat childlike; in other words a somewhat unlikeable man.

Following the wedding the plot feels like a bunch of different ideas linked together by a title. Characters are introduced and then disappear, plot is strange and the ending is rushed.

Thus far I'm half way through, and this is just not my cup of tea. I'm pushing to finish. All ideas of Darcy and Elizabeth are torn down. I do not want to hear of Darcy's exploits. Nor do I want to see Elizabeth as some whimpering, anorexic miss. Where is the strong willed Elizabeth Bennet?!? I'm just not feeling this. No me gusta. No me gusta.

After the Hunsford proposal goes its normal way, Elizabeth finds out that Bennet has died. On comforting her Darcy presumes they are engaged and takes care of her family. I found the clingy, jealous Darcy to be somewhat creepy, that plus not reading the sex scenes I can't give it more than 2 stars.

Perhaps this story is worth three stars. However, I could not get past Darcy’s obsessive personality. This version of Darcy would not have been a good choice for Miss Elizabeth, or anyone, really.

Darcy...whatever it takes

A lot of ups and downs with this couple, but it made for an interesting read with plenty of scenes involving Darcy and Elizabeth.

Elizabeth
- Some insecurities early in the story, but becomes the strong woman we know and love.
-Stubborn.
-Hypocrite. Some examples: Elizabeth nagged Darcy into telling her about his past relationships, but later when Darcy wants to know about her past relationship with his cousin, she says any relationship prior to him is none of his business. *Angry Elizabeth told Darcy she wants to be included in any decisions that involves her being somewhere, but accepts an invitation from Lady Eleanor for her and Darcy to go to Matlock without consulting Darcy. *Criticized Darcy for advising Bingley against Jane. Well, Elizabeth sat Jane down and told her all the reasons why she should chose one guy over the other. Never once did Elizabeth ask Jane which guy made her happy. Definitely more flaws than Darcy.
I don't know how the author pulled it off, but with all of Elizabeth's faults she was still likable and I enjoyed her character very much.

Darcy
-Likable, devoted, insecure, boyish, protective, and of course some arrogance. Just don't call him proper.
-I absolutely love that Darcy wasn't ashamed or too proud to admit and show Elizabeth his love- even she was only marrying him for her family.
-Mr. Gardiner's no nonsense approach was a favorite early in the story.
-No Caroline, Collins.
-Small roles for Jane, Bingley, and Richard.

reread.
This start at the DHP (slightly reframed) where Darcy has his wits about him a little more and is able give his defence in person at the time instead of in the letter. Lizzy's reactions is still as bad as in canon. But disaster strikes right after (on multiple fronts) and Darcy defends LIzzy by officiously announcing their engagement (he's probably 90% officious here and 10% mistaking Lizzy's actions - but never maliciously). That sets the stage for their growing and Lizzy begrudgingly letting go of her preconceptions over their engagement. My goodness Darcy has a tenacity and forbearance. Not that he didn't have some making up to do, but it's a hard road. Lizzy at least realizes at some point that she has some making up of her own to do, but her road is easier because frankly Darcy is quite forgiving and takes all the blame on himself. Typical.

Enjoyable experience

I enjoyed reading this adaptation very much. It begins in Hunsford where Elizabeth learns her father has died and she becomes engaged to Darcy. It revolves around their early years and getting to know each other intimately. Small changes made this unique- a Colonel Fitzwilliam and Jane Bennet relationship, Wickhams get married while Darcy's too ill to interfere, and all of the Bennet women break contact with Mrs Bennet who has turned bitter and nasty to all.
The last chapter is once again quite rushed and just seems a way to tell the future without details ( same feeling when reading that Christmas letter from friends that tell you an entire years activities in a few paragraphs).

3 and a half stars, rounded up to 4

This book is a bit difficult to rate. I liked it a great deal, but it contained a LOT of typos / grammatical errors, and those drove me nuts. So, reading it was a mix of pleasure and annoyance.

The characterizations weren't especially true to canon, but they worked well, as did the relationships. The storyline was enjoyable and held my interest, and I read the whole book word for word without skipping any sections, which is very unusual for me when a story contains so many typos.

Overall, I recommend this book, even if you're the type of reader who notices every error and finds them annoying. The pros in this case outweigh the cons.

Disgusting

It you like porn, here you go. Thankfully, it was free. Why this author writes such tripe is beyond me! The characters weren't any where as the original, especially Jane. I don't foment it. I would give it no stars if I could. I'll not be reading any more from this author.

A very enjoyable tale that deviates a little from the characters usual traits but that creates an excellent plot that keeps you turning pages. Highly recommended.

An interesting rewrite of P&P. The author takes many liberties with each character. One way or another Austen's beloved characters are touched on.

The Only Way: A Tale of Pride and Prejudice by Ola Wegner
2 1/2 stars (Borrowed from the Kindle lending library)

This was a bit of a disappointment. I thought the premise was interesting but it didn't develop into a strong story and sort of just meandered along.

The Premise: Elizabeth refuses Darcy and immediately after receives word that her father has died. She leaves for London to make her way home. Darcy follows and renews his offer to marry her and provide for her sisters and mother. Elizabeth feels like she's bulldozed into marrying Darcy. He is sweet and explains the whole Wickham is evil/I'm sorry I separated Bingley & Jane but still she resists (which is understandable).

They experience a lot of bumps in their relationstionship throughout the stor including a little weird plot revelation of Darcy having a fair share of mistresses and the appearance of a former mistress who stirs up trouble. It felt odd the way it played out.

I love reading re-tellings of P & P and I don't expect the characters to act exactly like Austen's. I even like versions where Darcy & Elizabeth become carried away and anticipate their vows as long as their characters are well developed. These characters felt uneven and their actions didn't always make sense.

I wanted to like Elizabeth but she was not nice. At the beginning, I understood her grief over losing her father and her frustration at not having much choice in marrying Darcy but she was downright petulant and Mr. Darcy was actually whiny at times. I never felt like Elizabeth really loved Darcy the way he loved her and I didn't like that.

I don't want to be totally negative because there were parts of the story I enjoyed. It's just the overall book was a letdown.

This is the third book I've read by Ola Wegner and like the other two, it has some noticable spelling and gramatical errors which are distracting. The other books by her I've read were "Apprehension and Desire" which I enjoyed very much, and "Deception" which was an ok read.

A fun P & P variation

Elizabeth gets the proposal from Darcy and turns him down after the Jane / Bingley fiasco and still thinks it's poor old Wickham! But, disaster strikes at Longbourn and Lizzy's favourite Uncle advices Lizzy to accept Darcy's offer. The relationship building and trust begin with quite a few hiccups. As Darcy candidly answers some of Elizabeth's questions he gets himself into a huge mess! Not the best way to start the marriage. There are some very sexually intimate moments in this book and the bedroom scenes are well written. (Warning for those who do not like them) Elizabeth seems to enjoy the bedroom moments with her husband. She wants to control Darcy with attention at times but starts to have some deeper feelings as her journey with married life continues. Jane may not be as interested in Bingley as Elizabeth thinks because Jane has her sights set on a soldier!

While I found this enjoyable I think the characters will not appeal to many. Elizabeth is quite vulnerable in this story. She is still stubborn and fiery and says horrible things when angry, but she is a very vulnerable character. Darcy has a bit of a rakish past to get over, which I didn't really see as a big deal, but I can see this offending other genre readers. However, the story reads easily enough and the only serious problem for me was Jane, whose behaviour is quite uncharacteristic with very little explanation for the rather strong deviation. At least with Elizabeth the author lays good groundwork for her fragility, between her father's death, her acceptance of marriage to a man she does not love solely to save her family, and her ever worsening relationship with her mother. But with Jane there is no insight into her actions.

I liked it, even if the plot was decidedly unoriginal, considering that it was based on an almost identical premise as another book from the same author (The only way).
I enjoyed the fact that, though she used the same leitmotiv and of course the same characters, the authoress managed to insert unexpected twists in the narration and to offer a different kind of development for Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth, both as individuals and as a couple.
I also liked the subtle humour that was imprinted in some of the scenes.
Mr. Collins' depiction, for example, was both spot on and hilarious.

As it was for other works by this writer, unfortunately, one more time I have to say that I found the ending rather abrupt: several sides of the story felt unresolved to me.
