The descriptive essays and stories collected in My Kingdom for a Lab! reflect the author's decades of experience with the country's most popular canine breed. While emphasizing experiences with Labs around his Montana home, the outdoor material—infused with insights into natural history as well as wing-shooting—covers a broad venue from the arctic to the African veldt. Although written from the perspective of a dedicated outdoorsman, all Lab enthusiasts will find engaging and informative material in this collection, ranging from thoughts on training to notes on the history of the Labrador Retriever.
I like Thomas's books on fishing and several on hunting with archery tackle. I love Labs, my current bird dog is one. Probably the best stories Thomas are those when he is flying his Cessna to hunt or fish in Alaska. This selection of stories about upland bird hunting with Labrador Retrievers is constantly interesting and entertaining but lacks the drama in his stories about hunting bears with a bow.
The scenic descriptions are worthy of some of his best efforts. It seems that no matter where the stories lead they lead to the drier habitats that contain huntable/edible game birds whether in Alaska or Africa.
Dlon E. Thomas is a cheerful and happy author with his choosen subjects in both hunting and fishing. My Kingdom for a Lab ! is a topic that lies near to the author's heart.
