I am a beginning gardener in zone 10b, and this book has taught me so much. I was prepared for a dry “how-to” book” about how to grow my vegetables abundantly, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much of the “abundance” in your gardening is about finding abundance in your spirit.
The sections are short and easily digestible, and there is a reference in the back so that you can refer back to terms you aren’t familiar with in other chapters, which was helpful! Fertilizing organically was an interest point for me and I will have to read deeper on the mechanics but his own examples of fertilizer routines for transplanting were exactly what I needed to know before I move my starts outside next week.
I especially enjoyed the part where Brian goes into detail about his own gardening failures and how he was able to reuse some of them in the form of compost and that not all failed experiments are a complete waste. I love the mindset he presents when speaking about his garden and the love that is exchanged both ways.
But some of my favorite sections included his renderings of garden plans, I feel so inspired! I will try drawing my own garden plans even if I have already started for the season. It’s nice to see everything mapped out the way he does.
Highly recommend this book for any interested beginner gardener, it is an easy and delightful read and Brian absolutely sparkles with his charming passion for all things that grow (weeds too).
