In April Asher's new Supernatural Singles novel, a witch takes a stroll on the wild-ish side, sparking an alert that saddles her with her very own Guardian Angel…who happens to be her secret crush―and new roommate.
Olive Maxwell much prefers teaching about the supernatural world to taking part in it and leaves the magical shenanigans to her two sisters―the Prima-Apparent and Bounty Hunter-In-Training. But after assigning her college students a project designed to nudge them outside their comfort zones, Olive realizes that she’s never once stepped a toe over her own…and it’s about time that changed. Her first trip into the unknown? Moving in with her long-time crush―and friend…tattooed, motorcycle-riding, and pleasantly pierced, Baxter Donovan.
Bax Donovan, Guardian Angel not-so-extraordinaire, has acquired so many black marks on his record it looked like a scantron sheet. He’s given one last chance to keep his Guardian wings intact, a high-profile Assignment he knows all too well. Olive is usually as low-risk as it got. Hell, she wrote the safety manual. But something landed her on the Guardian Affairs radar and his guess was it had something to do with the heart-pounding stunts she’s determined to check off her Dare I Docket list.
Keeping Olive out of trouble is about to be his toughest assignment yet, and not because he’s forced to shake the dust off his feathers and embrace his inner aerialist. He’s at real risk of shattering the only Guardian Angel Code of Conduct Rule he’s yet to Don’t fall in love with your Assignment. And he isn’t so sure that’s a bad thing.
If love didn’t play by the rules, why should they?
April Asher ended the Supernatural Singles series beautifully with this sweet and steamy romance following Olive, the youngest witch triplet, and Bax, her undercover guardian angel/roommate. I loved how Bax and Olive fell for each other so organically as they got to know each other and cross off items on Olive's 'bucket list'. This series was so fun and while I am sad to say goodbye to it, I so enjoyed getting to know these triplet sisters and their crazy family. Can't wait to see what is next from April asher!

~Many thanks to Net Galley and April Asher for an ARC of this book in return for an honest review.
I loved the first two books in this series Not the Witch You Wed and Not Your Ex's Hexes. They were pure magic! I almost did a back flip when I saw April Asher had a new book coming out in the series. I mean the first two books were fabulous. I so wanted to love this one. I thought I would, sadly this was my least favorite book out of the three. It is still a good book and a worthwhile read, but it failed to cast a spell on me in the same way the first two books in the series did. We can't love them all, but I did like this one!
Olive Maxwell prefers teaching about the supernatural world rather than participating in it. After giving her students an assignment, which entails stepping out of their comfort zone, she decides to do that same and makes a list of things that will take her out of her comfort zone.
Bax Donovan is a guardian angel who has a not-so-great record. After inviting Olive to be his roommate, he is assigned to be Olive's guardian angel. Keeping Olive out of trouble becomes his priority.
So, I say it every time it is all about the journey and this was an enjoyable one. I enjoyed how the characters complimented each other. Opposites do, as they say, attract. I enjoyed Bax's personality. He is social, witty, and handsome to boot. He is a little bit of a bad boy who has broken a few rules, but his heart is in the right place. Olive plays it safe; she likes to sit back and watch things happen. They play off each other nicely.
This book felt a little slower than the first two books. For me, it was lacking in drama. Yes, this book does have some drama, but it didn't feel as dramatic as the drama in the other books (I hope that makes sense). The other two also have a sense of danger which this book did not have. But I enjoyed that the gang was back. It was nice seeing Olive's sisters and the men in their lives. They have a great group of friends who tease and joke but also care and have each other’s backs.
I put this in my liked didn't love category. But one thing I do like about this series is that the characters are dealing with real life issues even if they are supernatural. In this book it was trying new things, pushing yourself and being more confident. Plus, there is romance and steamy scenes.
I enjoy how April Asher writes. I care about her likeable and charming characters and their plight. I can't help but root for them. Every one of her main characters has put a smile on my face.
A charming supernatural romance.
Thank you to St. Martin's Griffin and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
Not Your Crush’s Cauldron by April Asher Supernatural Singles series #3. Witchy paranormal romance. Can be read as a standalone but better as part of the series of the three sisters. Olive Maxwell prefers teaching about the supernatural world rather than taking part in it. She gets a bit of a wake up call career wise, and after assigning her college students a project designed to nudge them out of their comfort zones, she decides to take her own assignment to heart and make changes in her own life. First on the list of changes is moving in with Baxter Donovan, a long-time crush, friend, and tattooed, motorcycle-riding guardian Angel. Bax Donovan believes his charges should have free will, so his records aren’t all top marks. His newest assignment is Olive, who is usually low-risk. He’s more than willing to spend time helping her expand her boundaries and try new things. Bax needs to remember to keep his hands to himself while they are both trying new things. He has his own rules of Conduct to follow even though it’s going to be one of the hardest things he’s ever done.
Amusing, sexy, and empowering. A reminder to get out and try your own new things. Bax and Olive have some serious issues but by putting the worry aside, living and loving, and trying new things, they feel better able to deal with obstacles. Olive’s list is crazy! I’m not going to be an acrobatic silks performer, nor am I going anywhere near the rest of her list. But a little fantasy love play may be doable. Inspiring, if only…
Not Your Crush’s Cauldron by April Asher is the third book in the paranormal romance Supernatural Singles series. Just like a lot of romance series the Supernatural Singles series changes main characters in each new book of the series with the world building being what ties them together. Since we have new characters in each book these books can be read as a standalone if choosing to do so.
Olive Maxwell is a teacher and prefers quietly sitting back teaching about the supernatural world than being a big part of it like her two sisters. When Olive hands out an assignment to her students that just may get them out of their comfort zone Olive wonders why she stays so solidly in her own.
This realization that she’s always playing it safe and staying in the shadows leads Olive to begin making some big changes in her life. One of those changes was to move into Baxter Donovan’s and with that renew her longtime crush on the handsome guardian angel. Bax soon finds out that Olives new antics have gotten her on someone’s radar and he has been chose to protect her but rule number one of guarding is don’t fall for your assignment.
Having read the first two Supernatural Singles books I knew what to expect going into Not Your Crush’s Cauldron by April Asher. These paranormal romances are basically like taking a romcom story and setting in a supernatural world and I found each a lot of fun. This third book may just have been my favorite of the series with watching the lead step out of her comfort zone which of course led to a lot of laugh out loud moments along the way. There really was growth with both characters though and that’s always a draw in a romance, fantasy or otherwise and when finished this is definitely an author I would return to in the future.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
Cute, mushy, and decent levels of steam. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The first two stories in this series were fun and wacky and I was hoping that this one would be the same. This book showcases the youngest sister of the trio and it does help to read at least the prior story to understand the connection between Bax and Olive.
Asher creates her characters with a lot of depth and drama. This story has some of that depth but I felt something missing too. Mainly this story is geared towards Olive finding herself and getting out of the boring box.
Bax and their slow-to-build relationship feels secondary and I didn’t understand the drama of him becoming her protector as her risks were so low-key.
I loved his character, however. He had a beautiful soul and really burned for Olive. Together they have a fun relationship that could really heat up the pages. I do wish we got a bit more of that heat, but their connection was tight and wonderfully supportive.
One thing that I missed, however, was the actual magic. There were a few instances that we got some of her magic bits, but nothing to speak of and nothing memorable in that area. We did see Bax using his magical talents.
Overall, Not Your Crush’s Cauldron is a sweet, mushy story that is light and enjoyable. Funny and warm. ~~~~~~~~~ * I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. * full review - https://amidlifewife.com/not-your-cru...
I loved this series so much but the 3rd book a tad more 🥹🫠
What to expect
▪︎ Friends to lovers ▪︎ Forced proximity / roommates ▪︎ Slow burn romance ▪︎ Personal growth
If you love cozy, magic-filled romances with witty banter and emotional depth, you'll love this read -- This series can be read as a standalone as each book follows a Maxwell sister on her journey
Plot
Olive has always preferred the safety of studying magic rather than using it, while her sisters embrace their supernatural powers, she’s happy staying on the academic side. However when she encourages her students to take risks, Olive realises she’s been playing it safe in her own life. Determined to step outside her comfort zone, she makes a bold move— becoming roommates with her longtime friend (and secret crush), Bax --Bax is everything Olive isn’t—adventurous completely at ease with magic. Living under the same roof brings them closer than ever, and soon their easy friendship starts to spark with something more. Olive opening her heart is the biggest risk of all. With a little magic, some unexpected chaos, and a lot of heart, Olive might just find that love was worth the leap all along.
This is the third (and final?) book in the Supernatural Singles paranormal romance series and it features Olive, the third witch sister and Baxter, a guardian angel. I really love that these books are set in modern-day New York City, in a world that acknowledges “supers” and we regular people are called “norms.” These are fun, mostly light reads, romance with large elements of fantasy/scifi. If you’re a seasonal reader, this whole series is great for “spooky season”/autumn.
Olive teaches at New York University, where she is chair of the supernatural studies department (or something to that effect). She’s curvy and wears glasses, and is extremely appealing to a guardian angel named Baxter, a guy in their friend group. He has offered Olive a room in his apartment, as a roommate, after her previous living arrangement didn’t work out. Bax is an interesting character - he’s a guardian angel and can pop out wings from his back, but he hates flying and is a little afraid of heights! He also is an artist, but just as a hobby, and designs intricate tattoos. He also rides around on a motorcycle and has piercings in “interesting” places. Olive asks her class to do things out of their comfort zone, and then she decides she should do the same. This leads to the guardian angel authorities deciding that Olive needs a guardian angel and assigns Bax. Problem: there’s a rule against falling in love with your guardian assignment.
Note: It’s a bit steamy, so be forewarned if that doesn’t appeal to you. There’s also a lot of talk about sex, not just the actual scenes. I rounded my star rating down a notch because of what I felt was the characters’ excessive focus on sex.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Griffin and NetGalley for the opportunity to read a review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This is the third book in the Supernatural Singles series and it can be easily read as a stand-alone. This is my first read of April Asher's works though. I often like to try authors I haven't read before.

My Thoughts: This was a fun witchy rom-com. This third book in the series is about Olive and her challenge (which she gave to her students but decided she should do herself) to try new things and her budding romance with Bax - a guardian angel. It was a quick read and rather light on plot, but was an enjoyable distraction. I understand the first two books were about Olive's two sisters and their happily ever afters, so not sure if this is the last of this series or if there will be more. There wasn't a lot of depth to the characters, so I didn't get too deeply attached to anyone, but it was a fun read.
Thanks to St.Martin's Press through Netgalley for an advance copy. Expected publication on February 13, 2024.

I absolutely LOVE this series and all the characters. This book, the third in the series, was about Olive -the youngest Maxwell sister and her guardian angel, Baxter. As a Catholic I believe in guardian angels, so this storyline was especially interesting to me. Is it possible for an angel to fall in love? This book had me believing so and rooting for him. Spicy and sweet!! Highly recommended, especially if you love witchy romances with a supernatural element.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martins Press for the chance to read this book for a honest review. All thoughts are my own. This book will be published February 13, 2024
April Asher has not disappointed me yet with her spicy and savvy witches!
This time we’re following Olive’s story right as she’s moved in with Baxter Donovan, Olive’s long time crush and soon to be (unbeknownst to either) her assigned guardian Angel. Because, obviously, Baxter’s an Angel.
During the novel Olive assigns her students to make a list of things they thought of doing that are out of their comfort zones. She decides to make one herself and complete the items on it and after his assignment, Baxter decides to join her.
This is a fun, witchy, story of trying new things and finding new love.
4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the E-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed the other books in this series so I was really excited to get to Olive and Bax's book.
The friend group is one of the best parts of this series and they didn't disappoint here. The triplets are nosy and loyal and a damn delight when they're all together. And don't get me started on Harper. Bax has been an enigma and I still feel like he is.
Plot wise, it was okay. If felt rushed and some points and directionless at others, almost like there were too many plot threads to have. I would have liked more information about Bax and being a Guardian (especially since we got his POV), but everything was pretty superficial.
Overall, it's the characters that kept me going here, but I feel like I could have left this one unfinished. However, if there is more to the series, I'll read it.
**Huge thanks to the publisher for providing the arc free of charge**
Of all the sisters, I was most looking forward to this one. But by the end, I was left wanting. The story felt forced. There was not any true connection or interaction between the characters. It felt like the author made the story go in this direction because she had already set it up this way. However, that’s not where our characters wanted to go. Or maybe they did, they just wanted it to be told differently. I don’t know, I just know it did not feel genuine, or true to the characters..
This is the third witchy Maxwell sister's book and my favorite of the three - they just keep getting better.
This time sister Olive gets her friend's to lovers HEA with guardian angel Bax. With his tats and piercings Bax seems like an odd match for the reserved and regimented Olive but they are both sweet and steamy together as Olive tries to push the boundaries of her comfort zone and Bax tries to keep her safe while she's doing it and ends up pushing his own boundaries as well.
While it is fun seeing the sister cameos, I still think that this could be read on its own - though it will make you want to go back and read their books:) And though this finishes up the HEAs for the triplets, I am hoping that their sassy mayhem bent friend - who is a 'sister' by choice - gets a book of her own too.
ARC courtesy of the publisher via NetGalley, publication is set for 13 February 2024. This is an unpaid review.
I absolutely love this humorous, unique, entertaining and super steamy series, and did my happy booty shake the second it showed up on my doorstep.
💗What appealed to you the most in this story?
This witchy romcom was just what I needed to remind me of all the amazing things I love about romcoms! There’s angst, surprises, some juicy drama and of course a sexy and swoon worthy angel and his tattoos. I also loved the sisters, Harper and their special bond and support for one another.
💗How was the romance?
Bax and Olivia have real-world problems, past and present, yet are anything but “just human”. The storyline of each getting out of their comfort zones and finding one another in the mix of all of the fun kept me glued to their relatable yet unique story. Plus the sexual tension was off the charts!
🔥Steam level - Open door…and it’s the kind that blew the hinges right off that door!
💗How was the pace?
This was such a fun and steamy story that I completely binged in less than 24 hours (just like the other two in this series)!

💗Do you recommend this book?
Yes!! I could not get enough of this enjoyable and laugh out loud funny story, and I cannot wait for Harper’s book in this fun series…and Harper better be getting her own book next!
Thank you, St. Martin Griffin, for this gifted copy in exchange for my honest review.
This was a cute little story. I love a coming out of your shell montage and Olive was determined to face some fears and do things that scared her to grow as a person/ And having Bax on the journey with her was a lot of fun - he's such a vibrant character and helped pull her out of her head and live without so much anxiety.
Not Your Crush’s Cauldron is the third book in April Asher’s paranormal romance series, Supernatural Singles, and it focuses on the youngest Maxwell sister, Olive. Unlike her sisters who are major players in the magical community, Olive has chosen to teach about the supernatural rather than to actively take part. When she assigns a project to her students that requires them to step out of their comfort zones, she decides that it’s time for her to do the same and creates a to-do list of challenging tasks that will accomplish just that.
Bax Donovan, a Guardian Angel, is Olive’s friend, long time secret crush, and now also her roommate. Bax is the pierced, tattooed, motorcycle-riding opposite to Olive’s shy, introverted personality but the two of them still have amazing chemistry.
Bax finds himself in an uncomfortable situation when something on Olive’s to-do list puts her on the Guardian Angel Affairs radar as needing protection and they make her Bax’s assignment. Bax is not allowed to tell Olive she’s his assignment, so he decides to accompany her as a friend to help her complete the tasks on her list.
There’s just one problem with that - the more time they spend together, the more Bax and Olive realize they have more than friendly feeiings toward each other, which is another no-no for Bax as her Guardian Angel. Is an HEA possible for them?
This one was so much fun! I enjoyed being back in this world and seeing Olive’s sisters again, and I also really loved the chemistry, and especially the fun banter between Bax and Olive. They’re just so cute together. I also loved that underlying tension that comes with forbidden love. It really made for a fantastic read that I couldn’t put down.
The audiobook was narrated by Zura Johnson who did a beautiful job capturing all aspects of the relationship between Bax and Olive and really enhanced my reading experience.
Note: I received a complimentary e-copy and an ALC of this book from the publisher via Netgalley.
April Asher returns to the supernatural world to finish the Supernatural Singles series. The heroines of the stories are the Maxwell sisters who are witches and triplets. Olive is the studious sister who enjoys teaching college. Who doesn’t love a witch who wears glasses. At the end of the second book, Not Your Ex’s Hexes (Feb 2023), it is clear she has feelings for Baxter Donovan. Bax is a Guardian Angel, who is tattooed and pierced. He also is Olive’s new roommate.
I love friends to more romance. Bax is trying to salvage his job where he’s accumulated a list of violations. But his new assignment is to guard Olive. She is usually quiet and safe but has taken on the task of doing a Dare list. Bax decides to protect her by joining her doing the tasks. Of course the big rule for guardian angels is not to become involved with the person they are guarding.
I don’t read supernatural/fantasy books often. But I’ve enjoyed this whole series. Yes some of the banter and antics can seem juvenile. But I love the sisters, their mates and friend group. This is a fun and steamy romp with good world building. I was looking forward to Olive’s romance and this did not disappoint.
Huge thank you to NetGalley, April Asher, and St.Martin Press for this arc! All thoughts are my own.
This book was so charming! I was so happy to receive this arc and resented the world April has created. Each character brings something enjoyable to the table and the storyline is 🤌🏻
I really loved getting Olive and Bax as the main characters here! Watching Olive try to step out of her comfort zone really made me think about how everyone has their own bubbles we stay in and how it's a powerful step to branch out! Bax with his bad boy persona yet he's a talented artist and softy when it comes to Olive made me fall in love with him!
There's great banter and roommates trope which are major selling points for me!
There's tons more witchy fun in this installment of the Supernatural Singles series. This time, it's Olive, the third Maxwell sister finding love.
This had such a fun plot with Olive trying to step out of her comfort zone, and her new roommate, Bax, is along for the ride. I absolutely loved Olive and Bax together. They were so amazing and cute! Their relationship was just perfect!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Thank you NetGalley for an early copy of Not Your Crush’s Cauldron by April Asher. All opinions are my own.
Unfortunately, this book was not for me. It’s possible I didn’t enjoy Not Your Crush’s Cauldron because I hadn’t read the first couple of books in the series. When I requested it, I didn’t realize this was the third book in a series. Normally I’m fine reading romance series out of order, but I think this is one series that might be better read in order.
Their winter wonderland date was cute, but that’s about all I enjoyed. It was so hard not to skim. This story read very young, though the main characters were (I think?) in their thirties and the romance too spicy for it to be YA. I also wasn’t a fan of Asher’s writing style.
* I would recommend reading the previous books before reading this entry.
Always known as the safe sister, Olive Maxwell knows she loves teaching about the supernatural world more than actually participating. But when her living situation forces her to move in with the gorgeous guardian angel Baxter Donovan and she assigns her students an unique project, Olive decides to take the plunge and join in on the assignment. Forcing herself to step outside her comfort-zone puts her on the top of Baxter's list and the sparks between them might finally ignite.
Pro's: + Just like the previous books, there are some real funny moments in this book. It is not just the dialogue and the sas between characters, but there are also some funny scenes that had me laughing out loud. + This story is truly character driven and it does it very well. It is fun, but also light and easy to read . The bond between the female characters is almost tangible and I feel like that bond gets closer with every book you read.
Con's: - The ending was so predictable is was spelled out halfway through the book and that is just such a shame. It wasn't even concealed, it was literally written out as an exchange between characters. It felt a bit lazy, even though it wasn't an horrible ending at all.
I like this series a lot, it is light and easy to read, but at the same time it is a great and entertaining read. None of the books felt even closely the same and since there is an continuing story, it feels like a closed loop. Great dialogue and the characters bounce as amazingly off each other as the previous books. I hope there will be another book, as there is one more 'sister' and I cannot wait to open the pages of that one.
So this was cute but it wasn't memorable for me. This was my first book by Asher and I thought the description sounded adorable. Love me some witchy women, and I do love the friends to lovers trope. But something about this book just didn't flow right for me and I found it a struggle to keep going.
Now i know this is technically the third in a series and I didn't read the other two, so I didn't have the relationship backgrounds on everyone that comes with that knowledge. But I like series like these, where you can come in at any time and pretty much pick up on the dynamics. I floundered for a bit with keeping everyone straight and with their partners, but I eventually got it. And while I liked Olive, I was more drawn to her friend Harper - the succubus demon and wanted to know more about her. So I guess that's good in case Asher decides to write her book?
I think the pacing was the biggest issue for me. There seemed to be big scenes that happen and then they end abruptly and we skip some days and it's off to the mundane. It was really weird. I get that it's set in the modern world and I like these type of books, but I also wanted to see some of the after math of what happened, not jump to after the fact. Take the cabin retreat. We had the hot tub incident and a snow tube event, then that was all. We get a little blurb about how fun it was and it was back to work. It was like, well why was it there then? Everything just felt like hints of something else that we never quite got to.
But I did like the friendships in the book and that's why I gave it the 3 stars. Sisters supporting each other - even faux sisters - gotta love and support it. They were there for each other 100% and it was so great to read. So overall, it was just okay for me.
Not Your Crush’s Cauldron was a fabulous paranormal romcom that swirled with forced proximity, friends to lovers and a steamy forbidden romance. I love that we finally got Olive and Bax’s story! They had been staples in the previous two books. So this witch and tatted up guardian angel mashup was everything I was hoping it would be! Plus we also got Bax’s POV, and it was sigh worthy! Their story had me laughing out loud so many times, especially the house warming gift part. I’m so happy I binged this series and can’t recommend enough to read them in order ♥.
This is the third in the series by April Asher, and I have enjoyed every one so far. They aren't particularly deep stories, but I like that they don't fall into the typical romance troupe of "Oh no! We had a miscommunication! We can never be together! But I refuse to talk to you about it even though it will be solved instantly!"
Asher has a great command of her characters, and I like that past relationships still show up in this book! This title was not earth shattering, but I appreciated the story, and I didn't at all feel like it was a waste of my time!
Thank you to Dreamscape Media and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
I like it, I did, but a couple things annoyed me. The way the MMC called the FMC 'angel' when he was, in fact, the actual angel. Weird. 'Snortle' was used way too much. And lastly, when they [sex spoiler] That's just disgusting.
Another great story in this series! Olive and Bax were everything I hoped they would be. I love that he fell so hard and fast for her and that he helped her stretch her self out of her comfort zone. I really hope Harper gets a book and this is not the end of this group of friends.
Olive want may favorite out of the sisters but I’m still really enjoying this series. A solid go-to if your looking for a leading lady with some extra curves❤️
