Cabe prever una época en que el género policial, invención de Poe, haya desaparecido, ya que es el mas artificial de todos los géneros literarios y el que más se parece a un juego. El propio Chesterton ha dejado escrito que la novela es un juego de caras y el relato policial un juego de máscaras… Pese a esta observación y al posible eclipse del género, estoy seguro de que los cuentos de G.K.C. siempre serán leídos, ya que el misterio que sugiere un hecho imposible y sobrenatural es tan interesante como la solución de orden lógico que nos dan las últimas líneas.

Cinque racconti per uno scrittore di cui avevo tanto sentito parlare ma non avevo ancora avuto modo di leggere nulla.
Sono racconti enigmi, misteri che aleggiano sul lettore e che alla fine vengono svelati. Quattro di essi hanno due protagonisti di eccezione: Padre Brown, acuto e sagace, e l’investigatore Flambeau, che si rincorrono nella risoluzione del “giallo” di volta in volta presente, in un’atmosfera a volte macabra, come nel caso de “ L’onore di Israele Gow”, altre d’effetto nel racconto che porta il titolo della raccolta, o di suspence ne “ gli strani passi” e ne “il duello del dottor Hirsch”. Ma quello che dà l’impronta alla raccolta, che ci pone davanti a ciò che ci dovremo aspettare nella lettura è “ i tre cavalieri dell’Apocalisse”. Come direbbe il caro Holmes: “ Una volta eliminato l’impossibile, ciò che rimane, per quanto improbabile, deve essere la verità”.

Fantastikten ziyade polisiye türünde öyküler barındırıyor serinin bu kitabı. Beş öyküden dördü de, Chesterton'ın, Sherlock ve Watson ikilisi gibi duran Brown ve Flambeau ikilisine dair. Güzel öyküler; fantastiği andırıp olayların çözüm anında gayet realist bir duruş sergiliyorlar.

The author creates a wonderful juxtaposition of the "prophet of Apollo" and the prophet of Christ. Through this contrast and more, Chesterton subverts visual expectations in a way that is true to Christian doctrine (2 Cor 11:14). In addition to being true to his doctrine, the author is adept at his storytelling: he alludes to a painting you should look up for the best effect (he nails the description) and presents some interesting twists along the way.

Non avevo mai letto alcuno dei celebri racconti di Padre Brown, anzi non avevo mai letto Chesterton! Ringrazio quindi Borges per l'ottimo suggerimento che ha iniziato a colmare una mia imperdonabile lacuna.
Il volumetto contiene 5 racconti, 4 con protagonista l'astuto prete più "I tre cavalieri dell'Apocalisse", gioellino a metà strada tra Borges e padre Brown che nonostante la consueta struttura "come ha fatto a...." tocca nel suo astratto lucore delle corde quasi poetiche.
I racconti sono agili e divertenti, la struttura segue sempre una strada ben tracciata ma ciò che invoglia la lettura è essenzialmente scoprire l'enigma, restare come Flambeau in trepidante attesa che il perfido ministro di dio ci metta al corrente dei misteriosi ragionamenti che conducono alla soluzione dell'enigma. Perché è così che Padre Brown procede, per ragionamento. Una rapida osservazione, un particolare fuori posto e la macchina pensante del prete si mette in moto, implacabile come il destino, pronta a mettere in fila nella giusta sequenza gli elementi più disparati. Lo si può vedere facilmente in "L'onore di Israele Gow", dove non senza un certo compiacimento Padre G.K.C. Brown si diverte a snocciolare possibili collegamenti tra elementi apparentemente inconciliabili.
Una prosa leggera ed erudita quella di Chesterton, intrisa di arguzia in puro stile british che sicuramente vale la pena di approfondire.

Der erste britische Kriminalschriftsteller ist hier mit 5 Kurzgeschichten vorgestellt. 4 davonbeinhalten den berühmten Pater Brown. Ich würde diese Geschichten nicht nur Fans der neuen BBC Serie empfehlen. Es ist ein guter Ausschnitt von Chestertons Werk, der wirklich im Herzen seiner Geschichten immer ein Rätzel hat und einen Charakter, der einfach schlauer ist als alle anderen.
Ist es frustrierend, dass ich nie auf die Lösung komme? Ja, aber es macht auch Spaß...

Concordo umilmente con Borges riguardo alla superiorità de I tre cavalieri dell'Apocalisse rispetto ai restanti racconti, quanto meno rispetto a quelli contenuti in questa piccola antologia, seppur piacevoli: probabilmente perché non apprezzo abbastanza il giallo "classico", che ritengo troppo artefatto.
Abbiamo dunque quattro piacevoli racconti - con protagonista il celebre padre Brown - e un piccolo gioiellino che colpisce per l'amara ironia ( stavolta niente spoiler ).
C'è un tema ricorrente in più racconti ( e mi par di capire molto caro all'Autore ), quello del travestimento, della finzione e della mascherata, e dei conseguenti scambi di persona, voluti o meno. Tema che troviamo sia ne I tre cavalieri... che nei browniani Gli strani passi e Il duello del dottor Hirsch.
G.K.C. trova anche il modo di travestire da racconto giallo una critica alle "nuove religioni" alla caccia di adepti e dei loro soldi, ma anche di condannare le ambizioni personali o di lodare una peculiare onestà. Il tutto dimostrando di possedere una notevole fantasia e una buona riserva di ironia.
Lettura gradevole, dunque, anche se non posso affermare di essere stato particolarmente colpito dalla figura di padre Brown.

Öyle ilginç bir kitapki elinize aldıktan bir kaç dakika sonra göz kapaklarınız ağırlaşıyor, uykuya yenik düşüyorsunuz. Bu nedenle bitirmem epey bi gecikti. Kitabımız 5 ayrı hikayeden oluşmakta. Bir diğer garip olayda şu ki, kısaca bahset deseniz hiç bir hikayeden bahsedemem. Kitabn kapağını kapadığınız anda aklınızda hiç bir şey kalmadığını farkediyorsunuz. Özellikle son hikayede aşırı sıkıldım. Bilmiyorum belki çeviri ile alakalıdır. Umarım serinin diğer kitapları böyle değildir.

Toplamda beş hikayeden oluşan kitapta ilk öykü (Mahşerin Üç Atlısı) ve son öykü (Dr. Hirsch'in Düellosu) bana çok tanıdık geldi. Sanki bir filmde izlemişim, birilerinden dinlemişim gibi. Diğer üç öyküyü de (Tuhaf Ayak Sesleri, Israel Gow'un Onuru, Apollon'un Gözü) iki sene önce "Peder Brown'ın Masumiyeti" kitabında okumuştum, yeniden okumuş oldum. Hâliyle, tekrar okuması yapıyormuş gibi hissettim ama bu demek değil ki sevmedim. Sevdim, çünkü karakterler gizemleri -Sherlock Holmes gibi- değişik bir bakış açısıyla çözümlüyor. Okumanızı tavsiye ederim. =)

Çok güzel bir seçki. Chesterton'un Peder Brown karakterinin akıl dolu çözümlemeleriyle tatmin eden 4 hikayesi ve Borges'in satranç oyununa benzettiği 1 hikayesi olmak üzere 5 hikaye içeriyor kitap. Hikayelerde dikkat çeken şey karakterlerin fiziksel olarak anlatılmasından sonra dini olarak da tanıtılmaları. Dedektif hikayeleri arasında tanınırlık açısından hak ettiği yerin çok daha yukarıda olduğunu düşünüyorum Peder Brown'un hikayelerinin.

um tanto atroz. se o vómito for um bando de corcéis atados a uma árvore, o género policial é o lobo que assusta as montadas e faz retesar as cordas. o padre brown será a aguçada casca da árvore que corrói as cordas. a junção do policial com a católica personagem é perigosíssima - mais um conto do padre brown na ementa e as montadas correriam livres na direcção do precipício.
Chesterton tem alguns momentos geniais - mas são pérolas caídas numa ETAR.
há uma omnipresente arrogância-moralista-burguesa-cócó. mas a coisa melhora imediatamente fora do género policial.
foi curioso perceber que o último conto influenciou bastante a narrativa de Borges.

Perhaps after the slump of mediocre middles I'm just happy to have an actually entertaining mystery again! Or maybe it genuinely is that Chesterton saved his best mysteries for the end of the collection (and the top too, those early ones I enjoyed). Also I find it funny that the first recommended version of this story when searching it on Goodreads is a version for the visually impaired. You'll get why I find this funny as you read the story.

“O Olho de Apolo” de G. Chesterton inclui também os contos: “A Honra de Israel Gow”, “O Duelo do Dr. Hirsch”, “Os Pés Estranhos” e “Os Três Cavaleiros do Apocalipse”. Depois do livro do Wells, confesso que as minhas expectativas não eram altas (visto que este livro pertence à mesma colecção), mas acabou por se revelar um livro bastante bom, visto que os contos (de carácter policial) são interessantes e estão bem escritos (em particular o último). Em cada conto há um mistério a resolver, mas curiosamente todos os mistérios são bastante improváveis, parecendo em alguns casos quase impossíveis. A forma como são resolvidos, porém, em alguns casos, deixa um pouco a desejar, mas não é nada de imperdoável.
