He wrote that by personally observing horses in the wild, he learned to "listen" to their non-verbal "language"; that when horses understood that they can trust you, they will decide to be with you. Roberts registered as his term for "hooking on", the phrase "Join~Up", in which a trainer negotiates with an untamed horse to form a voluntary relationship with him
This book allowed me to learn ground work with horses. It's a true bible. Precise, clear, detailed, unambiguous (which is very important when it comes to horses) and transporting from A to Z the message of non-violent attitude and action both with horses and all other creatures. Monty Roberts is master. Both in his own capabilities as a horseman and as teacher for the following generation which will produce even more sublime masters.
If you are an equestrian, a horse lover, a backyard horse owner you would benefit from the wisdom of book. However, a good part of the book is about Join Up system that Monty is famous for so if you are looking for general information on horsekeeping then this book won't suffice. If you have been curious about this Join Up method that by now avid horsemen have heard about, talk about and have opinions about, then maybe you would want to read this book as it describes this method in detail and even when describing other concepts and problems that horse handlers have with horses, the author will reflect upon how handler often needs to just go back to using Join Up with the horse.
Monty Roberts is a pioneer of a more humane form to horse training, in which one aims to convince the horse to cooperate on its own volition, rather than by psychologically breaking it via threats and brute force. The middle chapters can be a slog if you don't intend to work with untrained horses yourself, but the bookending ones provide interesting, concise information and practical tips useful for most every responsible equestrian to consider if one wants to treat their horse with more respect. I like how every chapter sums itself up in a very brief bulletpoint list that's easy to return to. Some of Monty's ideas about e.g. lunging are quite unconventional though, and might need an extra effort to prep for (or extra convincing at your conservative equestrian facility) if you intend to see them put into practical use.
Interesting way of starting a horse. I've tried the join-up method that Monte teaches and I have found that it does work to help earn respect without force.
Having a horse to practice these methods made it easier understand and apply.
A peaceful way of dealing horses and handling them. I learned a lot from this book at a time when I was establishing a relationship with a new and mistrusting horse. So many nuggets of information that I have been able to apply into daily life. I haven't been successful in Join up yet as I am too inexperienced and still building up trust with my horse. But the book isn't only about that so I got a lot from it in other things.
The writing is easy to follow and the book flows nicely. If you are interested in Monty's kind methods of working with horses, this book is a great resource.
