Myra Cohn Livingston was born in Omaha, Nebraska. Her family moved to California when she was 12 years old. She studied the French horn from age 12 to age 20, becoming so good that the Los Angeles Philharmonic invited her to join them when she was 16 years old. She had other plans. She knew she wanted to write.
Light & Shadow is a poem book about real life objects and themes. The poems are all set up in a similar format of four stanzas, and a syllable structure of two, four, six, two for all of the stanzas. There is much symbolism contained in each of the poems, with many metaphors. There is no real connection between the poems. Accompanied with the poems are pictures, which directly correlate with the title of the poem. The photographs either are a full page spread or a half page. The photos themselves are mainly close-ups of those objects, with darker tones. One of the only abstract photos is the one paired with the poem Toll Bridge. This photo was made up of coins, and in the top half of the coins depicted a bridge. This photo was one of my favorites, because it was differently set up, and not a traditional snap shot. Overall, this book had engaging poems with accurate photos to pair with it.
