The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck #2

Rate this book

The book is terrific fun, balancing humor, adventure, romance and history to make an entertaining blend. Rosa's commentary is very enlightening, to see the research into actual history and Duck history. There are plenty of gags, most genuinely funny, but the adventure never feels compromised. And the character moments - mostly between Scrooge and Glittering Goldie - but also with Donald and more are great.

Highly recommended book for fans of fun-loving adventure!

First and foremost, I have to thank a good friend of mine, - a comic aficionado-, who is kind enough to lend this book to me. Although I met Scrooge McDuck since I was a little girl and became a fan instantly, I barely read the English version, let alone knowing Don Rosa. Had I read the English version, I would have become an avid reader of Don Rosa's version earlier.

After reading the book, my long forgotten question about why Scrooge did not have a wife was finally answered perfectly. It is bittersweet to know that even a grumpy old Scrooge could fall in love with Goldie, deep. Now, all that left for me is, if only he opened the letter from Goldie :(
Somehow, it is probably the one that made the particular story beautiful; the lost love, that is.
Scrooge Mcduck would bear this memory in his mind forever.
"Memories can be deep and profound, but the mind can flash through them at light speed - especially if they are memories frequently visited."

Last, as we enjoy adventuring with stories from the book, may we always remember what this 10-year-old Scrooge Mcduck when he got his first dime, "Life is filled with tough jobs, and there will always be sharpies to cheat me! Well, I will be tougher than the toughies, and sharper than the sharpies, and I'll make my money square!"

Thank you, Scrooge McDuck, rest well in peace.

I think its the best comics i ever read. The narrative, the story, the sentiment. Everything.

The in-between chapters that Don Rosa did not tell in his 12-part series include: A time-travel story by Magica DeSpell (which was drawn before the main series was started) and ties with episode 1; Scrooge McDuck’s trip on the Cutty Sark just in time to see the explosion of Krakatoa; his fight with the Dalton bros, helped by Buffalo Bill, Annie Oakley and Geronimo; his encounter with T. Roosevelt during the excavation of the Panama canal; and most importantly, more on his Yukon days and his relationship with Glittering Goldie, to whom he teaches how hard miners work when she tries to steal his gold and deed. The volume is capped with “The dream of a lifetime”, revisiting in dreams his youthful adventures and, maybe, finally getting to enjoy the happy ending with Goldie that he missed in real life.

Ihanan romanttista, kuten Rosa itsekin sanoo. Kaiken kruunaa ihana Unelmoiden läpi elämän, jonka lopun onnenkyyneleinen nukkuva Roope on ehkä ihanin juttu koko maailmassa.

Parhautta! Rosa on nero.

Rosa really knows how to inject pathos and meaning into what could have been a simple, silly alternate history of the world. Donald Duck meeting his dead mother, Hortense, as a dream-memory in his Uncle's mind is extremely touching -- even if it has to end in a bit of slapstick.

And honestly, I can't believe they didn't include Rosa's "Hearts of the Yukon" in the official "Life & Times"! It had an incredibly poignant ending, right up there with the deaths of Scrooge's parents in the official volume. This entire volume, this simple "Companion", is just as good -- if not better -- than the original!

“Maybe it's nicer to pretend that there's one person in this sorry world that I might... that I can...”

Don Rosa delves deeper into Scrooge's life and the fun adventures continue. Above all, I appreciated the way his relationship with Goldie was handled, it was cute and quite heartbreaking. Even Scrooge McDuck himself, the richest duck on earth, didn't manage to get everything that he needed after all.

The second volume of Scrooge McDuck's life compiles the "in between" chapters of his life that weren't part of the main narrative in the first volume.

So this is just a series of interesting and often times poignant stories that didn't quite fit into the first volume. And while the first volume definitely feels more structured than this one, the second volume, in my opinion, feels more adventurous and sometimes more memorable. I don't know if its the fact that these tales can be read out of order so they are self contained narratives, or the fact they are just fun trips with Scrooge, but this volume really felt much more loose and at the same time, had some emotional moments that really leave you thinking about them after you put the book down. However, I would say that those emotional moments are built off of the foundation of the first volume, so really, these two volumes are companions to one another.

The stories themselves are great. They often refer back to the first volume, but elaborate or continue the stories. We also have a couple of stories that close some of the loose ends from the first volume as well. Hell, there's even a dream story that has Scrooge ending up with Goldie, his secret dream of all dreams. There are moments like that, where the sincerity and emotion of the tales being told really shine through. The love that Don Rosa has for these characters, really emanates from the pages. So when Scrooge stops by his mother an fathers gravestones for a quiet moment (like in volume 1), it really resonates. Scrooge really touching.

Overall, if you are a fan of the comics medium, I highly recommend this. It is a master class in story telling and narrative structure, and its a guide book to tell an amazingly detailed and interesting story, without losing the charm or sentiment in order to do so. Highly recommended for fans of all things Duck related as well as fans of Comic book classics.

Big fan of the main Life of Scrooge arc (collected in vol. 1). The main part of ths second volume adds to that. 4 stars easily.

Sadly, I’m not particularly fond of the three bonus stories (“Of Ducks and dimes and destinies”, “The Dream of a Lifetime” and “The Old Castles Other Secret”). While there are overlaps and connections to both the main Life of Scooge arc and the B/C chapters in the 3 extras, they do feel tacked on. 4, 3 and 2 stars, respectively.

All in all, 4 stars.

Loistava aloitus lukuvuodelle.

This is a great companion piece for the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck series with great in-between issues and a fantastic last story with Inception before Inception with Donald going inside Scrooge mind to stop Beagle Boys from finding out the combination to his huge vault in Duckburg.

"Unelmoiden läpi elämän" on oikeastaan ainut hieman parempi (yksi Rosan parhaista imo) tarina tässä kirjassa. Rosan kirjoista turhimpia.

I love Don Rosa and his stories!
While these might not be part of the “original” idea about “Life and times of Scrooge McDuck”, this is an exactly just as great collection of stories!
Do yourself a favor and read them both, when in need of some epic duck-adventures.

A must-have for those who enjoyed "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck."

Also, a nice standalone book of stories featuring Scrooge McDuck and company. Don Rosa's art and storytelling style remains masterful, perfect. Lots of humor, adventure, danger, and some revealing details (and expansion on Carl Bark's work). This includes Scrooge's first dime earned, his dealings in the Klondike and fight with some real life historical legends, his romantic relationship with Glittering Goldie, and a friendship with Teddy Roosevelt. Also, a fantastic story kind of added..very similar to the movie Inception, where Scrooge's nephew Donald fights the Beagle Boys in a game of wits within his past memories in a dream.
