An overview of British intelligence from its modern conception to the outbreak of the 2003 Iraq war.

Smith covers a lot, and despite coming in at almost 500 pages, he is unable to go to real depth in any of it. This is a good starter book to introduce the reader to the world of intelligence.

Given its publication date, it is now a little dated in its coverage of the post Cold-war period.

An interesting read, but would now recommend readers seek out a more modern study.
