'Wind River' is preceded by a short story, which is unrelated to the text that follows. But once you get into the main yarn it's a cut above the pulp-fiction novellas so prevalent in the genre. Yes, it's got a mysterious stranger a couple of feisty good ol' gals and a bunch of bellicose cowboys going head-to-head in a range war along with a side plot from the hero's past. Les Savage writes at a decent pace, using cowboy terminology so glibly it sounds just right.
Western fans will get what they expect with a few twists in the tail (tale) in what is an enjoyable read without asking too much of the reader.
