A stunningly good anthology with an inspiring range of authors and life experience and narrative strategy represented. I'm going to use it for an undergraduate Autobiographical Writing course I'm teaching in the fall. Introduced me to a slew of writers I didn't know about -- and need to go find. Used in a college Autobiographical Writing class and the students really enjoyed it; it improved their writing immensely.
3.5 - Read this as a textbook in my English class. Thanks Professor Borrello! As we navigated coming of age themes throughout our course, this book paired perfectly. It was really interesting to see how many interpretations there were of the same pieces of text. Regardless of enjoying each piece of writing, I can guarantee thought-provoking discussions to follow!
I really like the stories from this anthology. I came upon it at the library by accident when I was looking at the new arrival shelves on the way in. I've been looking from some different coming-of-age pieces for classes and usually find the same stories that everyone uses. They are typically the older, classic stories. This book has some great stories from around the world and most of them are newer pieces. There are excerpts from novels as well as short stories. It even includes an excerpt from Persepolis. Very cool.
The premise of this book is fascinating. However, it's hard to put as much stock into this anthology as one would like. As the editors acknowledge, all of the literature is submitted by authors well immersed in Western society, which handicaps them somewhat in my opinion.
It didn't meet my standards because I'm asking for a lot more than the average reader.
I am a teacher at the college level, and I will be using this anthology as course material for a freshman seminar that I'll be teaching in the fall. Most of the stories are great, but some of the themes are repetitive. I definitely will be supplementing with outside materials for the course, but this book provides a good base to build off of.
I had to read most of the stories in here for my autobiographical writing class. I enjoyed some, but not so much as to keep the book and read them again. I think this was a good book for the topic, and I am glad I read it one time, but I probably won't be reading it again. I might go through and read the ones I didn't read, but that's a big if.
