For nearly two centuries, through vast upheavals and enormous changes, railroads have remained the backbone of Americas transportation system. And always setting the pace and pushing the railroad to the fore has been the mighty American locomotive in all its ever-changing, ever-evolving forms. This concise volume traces that transformation, chronicling the evolution of steam, electric, and diesel locomotives from the early 19th century right up to the present.Detailed descriptions identify the more than 100 locomotive types pictured and explain their roles in the history of American motive power. Taken together, these closely annotated photographsover 250 in allreflect the grand geographic and technological breadth of North American railroading over the last 200 years.
A very light and quick overview of many of the trains produced in North America, mostly told through pictures and captions, I thought the lack of text would detract from the book, however it does not. I was pleasantly surprised.
