Preface Two modest objectives led me to write this book. My primary objective was to provide a specific alternative to the conventional developments of statistical mechanics, an alternative based on Richard Cox's contribution to probability theory, Claude Shannon's development of information theory, and Edwin Jaynes' view of statistical mechanics.
