5 stars because any time I open this book, my mood is immediately centered and calmed. It makes me smile, chuckle, and feel at peace. So many little pearly gemmies of truth that help me reconnect to nature and re-attune to Oneness. Some favorite quotes below:

Taoist Wisdom~~~

“Merging their consciousness with the Light and their body with the universe, in luminous emptiness the enlightened experience no-self. Forever detached, they enjoy the play of Heaven and Earth, without intervening through desire or fear, allowing every dilemma to arrive spontaneously at its natural solution.”
-Zhun Mang

“A man was afraid of his shadow and his foot prints, so he started to run away from them. The more he ran, the more footprints he left. No matter how fast he ran, his shadow kept up with him. In desperation, he ran faster and faster, until he dropped down dead. What a fool. If only he had sat in the shade, he would not have produced a shadow. If only he had kept still, he would have produced no footprints. If only he had kept himself at peace, he would have had no problems.”
-Chuang Tzu

“To use this short finite life to grieve over the chaos of the world is like weeping into a river of tears for fear it will run dry. Only those who abandon worrying about the chaos of the world and create order in themselves can begin to understand Tao.”
-Lao Tzu

“If everyone’s heart was full of love, how could misfortune arrive?”
-Lao Tzu

“One sees them everywhere —businessman hoisting themselves up on tiptoe, struggling desperately to succeed. They are overflowing with anxieties, so there is no longer even any room for love of their fellow beings. They are, therefore, themselves unloved, and regarded as being no longer human.”
-Chuang Tzu

“Following the example of Tao, the Wise meet all opposition with a quiet mind and an open heart. Then opposition naturally disappears.”
-Lao Tzu

“The way to nurture life is through abstract thoughts and happy feelings.”
-Lao Tzu

“We are not alive for very long, so we should not put off listening to the inner voice of our heart.”
-Lieh Tzu

“Be big hearted and friendly to everyone. This is the highest teaching.”
-Lao Tzu

Most Caucasian writers who discuss Taoist philosophy miss the mark pretty badly. Freke is no exception. Want to read about Taoism? Read The Tao of Power by R.L. Wing. Want to read a Caucasian exception to my previously stated observation? Read Lionel Giles.
