Creating a rich texture of personalities and possibilities, Anne Isaacs' story unfolds one poem at a time, ultimately sweeping the reader into a pageant of feline concern from which no one, young or old, cat-lover or not, will emerge unmoved.
I would like to use this book to have my readers begin to read like writers. I would use this during a unit where students learn about animals and have them write their own poetry on animals as this text have and I would allow students to craft their writing after this text.
All poetry - but each poem is in different voices and different styles - but it is supposed to complete the narrative. Some are more hard to follow than others. My daughter, age 10, only "got" about half of them and she is pretty literate.
Very witty and whimsical. As someone who owns cats, it is obvious to me that the writer knows cats well. I'd definitely recommend to other cat lovers, and lovers of poetry and picture books.
