Wood Point Academy is not at all what I expected. For one thing, it looks like a cross between military school and Buckingham Palace. Everyone stares, the floors shine so bright you can see your reflection in them from a mile away, and no one smiles. Unless they're kicking your butt in the process.
At least I've got plenty to take my mind off the fact that my psycho cousin, Miles De'Luca, keeps calling and declaring his love and promising to come for me just as soon as he's destroyed anyone standing in our way. Wes isn't going to like that idea. So between Miles, Wood Point's evil welcoming committee, and the drill sergeant hottie trainer from hell, I just keep asking myself, how did I end up here?
Heather Hildenbrand lives in coastal Virginia where she writes paranormal and fantasy romance with strong-willed heroines and dark, grumpy heroes who’ll burn the world down for their mate. Her most frequent hobbies are cuddling with her giant goldendoodles, riding country roads on the back of her husband’s motorcycle, and avoiding killer slugs.

Cold Blood is the 2nd book in the Dirty Blood series.
Heather Hildenbrand is (for me) an uneven writer. I've read stories of hers that are excellent, and I've read one that was (IMO) abysmally bad.
So I was a little reluctant to read this series, which was written earlier than the story I thought was so poorly written. I was afraid that her earlier writing & plotting skills would be worse, not better.
But I was happily surprised with Dirty Blood and Cold Blood. Both stories are really good and enjoyable.
This story follows Tara, the 17 year old child of a werewolf and a hunter. Werewolves & hunters are sworn enemies for generations. Tara's been shipped off to Wood Point, the prestigious academy that teaches hunters how to kill werewolves, so she can learn to defend herself against the evil weres who only want to kill hunters and the hunters who want to kill half-breeds like Tara.
Tara has more enemies than friends. One of these is Miles De'Luca, who has delusions that he and Tara belong together to jointly rule both werewolves and hunters. And no one is going to get in his way until he gets what he wants.
I really enjoyed the story. Some of it was surprising, some of it not, but it was still a fun read, and I'm looking forward to the rest of this series.
Title: Cold Blood (Dirty Blood #2) Author: Heather Hildenbrand Format: Paperback, E-Book ISBN13: 2940013473843 Published: November 2011 by Accendo Press
Tara has been given the opportunity of a lifetime. She is accepted into Wood Pointe Academy – an exclusive school for werewolf hunters. So she should be thrilled, right? Nope. But Tara doesn’t get a say in the matter. Her grandmother and mother have decided for her and she doesn’t have a choice. They think since her pyscho cousin Miles is on the loose, people have tried to kill her and she’s dating a super hot werewolf (mommy is very disturbed by this) that Wood Pointe will be a safe haven for her and she can train with awesome fighters and learn how to defend herself. Talk about going from the frying pan and into the fire. Turns out this time mother might not know best. Wood Pointe might be beautiful but the people leave little to be desired. Apparently, a “dirty” blood isn’t welcome and they do everything in their power to let Tara know it. And the walls of the academy? They don’t keep out phone calls from certain stalkers. Not to mention that Wes isn’t there. He’s miles away where she can’t see his fury hotness (a serious injustice) but… there is another hottie – I mean bossy, opinionated guy there that has been assigned to teach Tara how to fight. But Tara can only do one thing… navigate the hunter infested waters and try to stay alive. So before we get on with the review I feel that I must divulge some impertinent information. #1 I won a blog contest that got me a character in the book. The Cambria that you read about among the pages of Cold Blood, you know the one with the sexy bangs and kind of Goth but hot look? That’s me. Uh –huh. Clearly I might be biased. #2 I howl at the moon every chance I get and wait for my meat eating, stubborn snarling, big hairy piece of HAWT to come get me. Clearly I am good judge of werewolf books. Now that we have cleared up that little matter I will get on with my review. This book is a really great read!!! I loved it. Heather has a great writing style that is easy to follow and makes the reader anxious to turn the page. Tara is a great character that I liked before and I still like now. She is really strong despite all the stuff that life keeps throwing at her. I admire they way she just keeps moving, keeps going and doesn’t let the bad things that happen hold her back from what she has to do. I enjoyed the new characters that came into this book. Obviously Cambria is a favorite of mine (I admit it was a little jarring to see my name across the pages at times. They would say “Cambria,” and I would want to answer, lol). I also found it amusing that my alter ego in this book is a werewolf hunter because come on y’all you know that if a hawt were came at me I’d throw myself at him. LOL. Anyway, the other new characters, like Logan, were awesome as well. And then there was Alex… Can I just say it is a true testament to an author’s writing that she had me – the self proclaimed werewolf loving woman – swaying in the direction of a werewolf hunter... or maybe swooning in the direction of a hunter is a more accurate statement. This is guy is HOT. I mean seriously. The way I picture him: He was tall and moved with a quickness that made him appear much leaner than he was because when he was still – when all movement ceased his shoulders were far wider than I imagined. His blond hair was too long to be considered neat but not so long that it looked unkempt and his eyes- he had the kind of stare that made you uncomfortable but so intense that you found yourself fidgeting in your shoes. So, yeah. You know he has to be hot if I like him and he isn’t a werewolf but he kills werewolves… Anyway, he has a dangerous air about him but he is also very perceptive. He knows Tara its like he sees right into her and he always shows up when he needs too…. Sigh. But enough about the werewolf killer. Let’s talk about Wes. The resident Werewolf Hottie. He wasn’t in the book enough for my taste. I completely understood why he wasn’t there most the time but it was still hard to swallow. He’s got that macho, stubborn, protector thing down pat and I freaking love it. I wished he was on every single page of the book. Wes and Tara make a great couple, they are attracting in ways to one another that I think the reader doesn’t quite understand yet. I hope that their connection stays strong even with el werewolf hunter on the loose. But hey, if Tara decides that Alex is the one who makes her heart sing than Cambria will be right there to help Wes forget all about Tara….. he he he he. (hint, hint, hint Heather….) But in all seriousness, the plot was great and the surprises and twists and turns at the end were unexpected which makes for a fantastic read. At first I was a little worried when I read the synopsis and saw that Tara would be going off to basically an elite boarding school. I have seen this plot many times in books and it usually has left something to be desired for me. Not this time. The school was different and fresh and the action and scenes moved along never leaving the reader to falter. I highly recommend this book, this entire series. It is one of the best Indie books I have ever read. It IS the best werewolf Indie book I have ever read. It’s a unique take on and old classic character and that is what sets it apart. If you haven’t read this book I would say “What the heck are you waiting for?” Just remember… Wes is mine…. So there you have it. My opinion.
So much better than the first book! It had more of those Twilight/Vampire Diaries vibes that were so fun. I liked all of the new characters that were introduced, and the romance was way better this time around. It started off super slow, but after around the 50% mark it was so good! Super fun, quick read. 4.25/5 ⭐️
In this part of the story we meet Alex, Cambria, and Logan.
Tara goes away to Hunter School and meets Cambria and Logan. Both Hunters in training. They are the misfits and outsiders of the school so Tara fits into their click since she is a Hybrid. No one at the school wants to be friends with Tara since she is mixed blood.
Miles DeLuca has a plan and what he wants is Tara. Tara is discussed by this since his plan includes her being his mate and they are cousins..... YUCK. So Miles tells Tara he will come for her once his project is complete.
Alex is assigned as Tara's trainer and he likes to run a lot. Tara hates this task but is grateful for it in the end. Alex likes Tara a lot and this complicates things for Tara since she is seeing Wes. The problem is Wes is not around. Wes is trying to take Jack's place as the Leader of The Cause but a lot of the following don't want him because he is a hybrid. Wes does not like Alex's feelings for Tara but I feel that Wes's character does appreciate the fact that Alex will look after her and will try to watch over her. Alex knows Tara can handle herself and lets her just BE. Tara likes that Alex has confidence in her.
At the very end it is revealed what Miles project is and it will change the world as they know it. Tara is changing and becoming more ANIMAL and no one is sure why or what it will mean for Tara.
“When you won’t feel guilty anymore, I’ll kiss you again.”
Heather Hildenbrand has officially become one of my favorite authors; I loved Dirty Blood and the sequel Cold Blood did not disappoint! In fact it completely rocked my face off! Dirty Blood series just keeps getting better and better and I cannot wait to see what Heather comes up with next! If you haven’t picked up Heather’s Dirty Blood series, you need to right now cause you are seriously missing out!
While Dirty Blood covered a lot more of the Werewolf side of things, Cold Blood has completely flipped around and taken us into the Hunter side! Tara has to go to Hunter school, and she could not be any less happy about it. With everything going on around her, going to a boarding school away from everyone..including Wes, seems like a total waste. Thank goodness she right away makes some new friends Cambira and Logan! There is also Alex, he is her personal trainer/tutor, who may seem like he hates Tara, but really he doesn’t at all. As if being away from everyone, getting mixed feelings from Alex , and getting insane phone calls from her cousin Miles saying he will have her isn’t enough for Tara to be going threw she is also changing, and into what only time can tell.
Heather is putting together such an amazing series, from the characters, storyline, romance, action, suspense, it has it all! I very much enjoyed Dirty Blood the first novel, but Cold Blood I completely fell in love with from beginning to end.
My favorite part of this new addition to the Dirty Blood series was the new characters! These new characters are ones I will not forget! Starting with Cambria, I adored her. She is a spunky edgy chick that doesn’t take crap. She was a great friend to Tara always standing up for her, and I look forward to seeing their friendship grow in the next novel! Another new friend Tara made was Logan, he was also a great new addition! He is the shy, nerdy guy, but he also stands up for Tara and you can’t help, but appreciate him for it.
Then there’s Alex…oh Alex how you have come into this new addition and completely tore my heart in two! I was completely in love with Wes, but now that Alex is in the picture I am stuck! Alex in the beginning comes off as the tough guy that couldn’t give two hoots about Tara, but as the story unravels he starts to show a softer side. He is a character that I believe any girl will love; he is beautiful, protective, strong, and of course caring. Girls who believed they were completely all for Wes (like myself) will be questioning themselves after meeting Alex in Cold Blood!
Not only were the new characters nice, but also the changes in some of our original characters were amazing! Tara really developed in Cold Blood, although I feel she was never foolish/immature like most heroines start out as, you could still see her growing throughout Cold Blood. Wes we don’t see often, but when we do I feel he was a lot more vulnerable, also even though he is seen less I felt Cold Blood showed a lot more of his feelings for Tara. Which was very much refreshing.
This novel in every aspect kicked it up, Heather I thought was already an incredible author after I read her first novel, now after reading Cold Blood, I know she is going to be an author that everyone should follow and keep their eyes on!
Surprise, Surprise! I was mesmerised by this book even more than the first! I loved the new characters and the character of Cambria, which was a grand prize right here on NightlyReading to win a character named after you in Heather’s next book, is a great character of BFF. Cambria will be very happy with the character that was chosen for her:)
The move to Wood Point Academy and the incoming of a new man in Tara’s life have her questioning everything! I, personally love Alex and would love to see more of him. Even George played a major role in this book, which I was not expecting but was a pleasant surprise!
“You’d kiss me back right now if I kissed you,” he said, and I tried to decide whether to even attempt denial. “But then you’d remember him and you’d feel bad for it.”
As Tara is being torn in several different directions, she is realizing a lot of the prejudices toward her kind. Being a Dirty Blood, is not thought of as a good thing from either the wolves or the hunters. She is also realizing that she is in need of a heck of a lot more training and is not as good as she had once thought. It does not stop her from trying and getting herself into a few pickles along the way!
My favorite scene is Tara’s first training session with Alex, it literally had me in stitches! The action starts there and I found myself falling in love with the interactions between the two. Wes seemed a little bit possessive in this book, which is understandable with everything that is going on, but he tended to get a little bit over bearing and became too much for even Tara herself.
I am so excited for this book and am awaiting with bated breath for the next installment! Heather has mastered the art of combining the love triangle along with the action and adventure of fighting Miles and the wolves. The book was a perfect mix of romance and drama that left me once again begging for more!
Hildenbrand has done it again with this intense sequel to her novel Dirty Blood. I really enjoyed this novel; it’s a bit more spicy than the first, with a love triangle developing (and I’m siding with Alex, sorry Wes), even more action and fights, and a mystery that will have the reader wondering what Miles is really up to. This was a great read, and I’m already jonesing for the next installment!
Hildenbrand is a phenomenal writer and she just keeps getting more refined as she writes her novels. I highly enjoyed Dirty Blood, but I really feel like Tara, and all the characters, really, is even more fleshed out in this novel, with more depth and realism. It’s no small feat to write a sequel that is just as good as the first, but Hildenbrand has done it and, though this novel is a long, she’s able to keep the reader glued to the pages.
The story picks up where the original, Dirty Blood, left off, re-introducing the reader to our old friends, while also introducing us to new ones as well. I absolutely loved Cambria and Logan—these new side-kicks are funny and realistic at the same time. And Alex… he’s to die for. Usually my allegiances never change, so imagine my surprise when I no longer cared what Wes was doing and wanted everything to be Alex related. Yes, readers, you will have to choose a side… but in all reality, Alex is the better candidate (I’m biased)...
A friend in my book club came upon this series and recommended it to us and I am so glad she did! This was a fantastic sequel to Dirty Blood. It had new and intriguing characters that were well developed for making their first appearance. Tara is off to Wood Point Academy against her mother's and everyone else's wishes but there she meets Alex. My favorite character in this book. I was instantly a fan and found his complex and stoic demeanor very entertaining to follow... I am impatiently waiting for the continuation of the "love triangle" that has come to be between Tara, Alex and Wes... Who will she choose??? I would certainly recommend this read to anyone, as it had made its way to my favorites.
It's rare to find a book where the follow-up is better than the first, but that's EXACTLY the way I feel about this book! I'm UTTERLY in love with it! Heather blew me away with this book. And I LOVE Cambria! She rocks!
Just wow! I am so impressed with this series and its twists and turns! I find that the different types of tensions between characters is actually very realistic and added a great deal to the story. Great heroine, dealing well with the information she has.
Favorite Quote: I cocked my head to the side, not ready to answer. “How did you find me?” He shook his head. “You snuck off school grounds. By yourself. Got attacked. Almost died.” He crossed his arms. “That means you go first.”
This book picks up exactly where Dirty Blood leaves off, which I thought was great. Wes is pretty busy taking over duties for the Cause while Jack is still recovering, so unfortunately we don't see him much in the beginning (or at all really). The story follows Tara as she gets settled in to life at Wood Point Academy, a school specifically for aspiring werewolf hunters. She's pretty reluctant at first, not seeing why she needs the extra training and not wanting to be away from Wes for such a long period of time, but in the end she doesn't have much of a choice, as both her mother and grandmother think it is what's best for her.
Tara was amazing, once again. She was thrust into an unfamiliar situation, at a new school, with kids who despised her just for the fact that she was half-werewolf, half hunter. There was certainly a lot of animosity toward her, but luckily she makes two new friends, Cambria and Logan, to make it at least tolerable. I really enjoyed both of these new characters, but especially Cambria, who was spunky, outspoken, and didn't really care what other people thought of her. Also, new hot guy alert! In Cold Blood we are introduced to Alex, who is assigned to help Tara with her hunter training, to be able to catch up with the other students. He's handsome and confident, but what makes their dynamic even more fascinating is the fact that Alex absolutely hates werewolves (for very personal reasons). Some other familiar faces are seen throughout as well, such as Jack and Fee, Miles, and Cord, and it's nice to get reacquainted with them.
As I mentioned before, there's a new hot guy on the scene. Honestly, usually I take a side when a love triangle enters the picture, but I'm really torn on this one. I absolutely adore Wes and at the time I read Dirty Blood I couldn't imagine anyone being better for Tara. Then along came Cold Blood and with it came Alex, Tara's hot, broody tutor. I was crushed to learn that Wes wasn't in this book much at all, and when Alex is introduced I felt kind of annoyed, like how dare the author try and break up such a cute couple! Once I got to see more of Alex though, I started to fall for him too, even though he was extremely conflicted with Tara being half Werewolf. I think that made their interactions so much more interesting and I enjoyed seeing how they both changed as the story progressed and they got to know each other better. So in this case, I'm torn. I still love Wes, but I'm drawn to Alex as well. Only time will tell where Tara's heart will lead her and I'm anxious to see who she chooses; I know in Vera's vision she saw Tara and Wes together leading the Cause, but I'm guessing things could always change.
I'm absolutely loving this series. It's a lot different than the other Werewolf books I've read in the past and so much more entertaining. Once I started reading this one, I couldn't put it down until I finished it. That's when I always know I have a good book on my hands; even when I have to put it down, my mind keeps wandering back to it and wondering when I will be able to get back to reading.
The characters are amazing, the story was superb, and the ending packed a punch, leaving us with a very tantalizing cliffhanger. If you're looking for a new YA book, I highly recommend the Dirty Blood series; you definitely won't be disappointed!

Where do I start ! Now normally when you read the next book in a series you think or sort of have expectations that it wont be as good as the first. But rest assured Cold Blood is even better. !! Dirty blood book one was great !! But Cold Blood is kick arse full of action, and a fantastic second book in this series. I really enjoyed it - if possible more than the first but saying this I loved the first story !
Tara is sent away to boarding school *Wood Point Academy** to learn her linage , hunter skills and everything that she must know to take over her grandmothers place. Life is not easy for Tara she is not welcomed with open arms, is given a hotty ** swoon ** as a trainer whom she physically wants to kick his arse ! and misses Wes more with each day that passes. Cambria finds Tara and has taken Tara on as her new Best friend. She makes life a little easier as well. She is sassy - funny and very full of energy and Life I really enjoyed this character ! She makes Tara's life at Wood Point Academy bearable.
Miles is still stalking Tara from a distance and Life is just not plain easy for Tara... I wont go into the storyline much but rest assured your in for a treat with Cold blood.
Heather has woven every concept possible into this read, love, friendship, werewolves, action, adventure, and even a great selection of characters for us to enjoy even a bit of magic if you may call it ! New concepts for hunters..... some have extra abilities ... ones you would never have imagined.. You must read to find out !
The action is kick arse, the descriptions are well placed forth, a great storyline that will keep you hooked line and sinker from the beginning to the end. It is revolved around the school but Heather and cleverly woven many things into this read to keep the reader intrigued and interested. !!
Characters were likable even Miles lol... his persistence kind of haunting but at the same time added that bit of intrigue we needed. Well Alex.... swoon !!! I knew from the moment I met him the decision between Wes and him would be a hard one, we shall see in the next book where Heather takes us !! But I must say Alex wove his way into my heart in this one.
Overall a kick arse storyline, that flows smoothly throughout, mystery that will keep your interest piqued, smooth flowing chapters that glide from one to the next and enough goodies to keep you wanting more !
I eagerly await book 3 already and Ive only just read book two.
REVIEW: Cold Blood by Heather Hildenbrand starts off right where Dirty Blood ends. Hildenbrand’s writing gets even better with this action packed story. Adding a love triangle to the mix, the lead Tara has a whole lot more on her plate than dealing with the fact she’s not a normal teenage girl. I really enjoyed the second installment and the fantastic twist that I never saw coming.
Tara starts at Wood Point Academy, where hunters train to stop and kill werewolves. Unfortunately for Tara she doesn’t get a warm welcome since she is what they call a Dirty Blood. She has a wolf side to her that she shares with her boyfriend Wes, who is now taking over as the leader of a group called the Cause. But the two are separated while Tara is training and her life gets a little more complicated when her old foe is following her every move.
I don’t know what it is about academy stories but I just love them. Tara undergoes a tough amount of training with her trainer and the very “nice on the eyes” Alex. She needs to catch up with the rest of the kids in her class, so Alex makes sure to train her hard. Though their friendship is a little rocky at the beginning I loved the development of these two as the story moves on. I’m dying to know what Alex’s role will be in the future novels.
Two other characters I enjoyed was Tara’s new friend Cambria, she’s a kick butt hunter with a special gift and Logan an extremely smart and cute hunter that befriends Tara at the beginning. You also get your mix of the “oh so full of herself” antagonist that makes sure to harass Tara whenever she can.
Overall this was definitely an action packed book, Tara really grows up and her abilities seem to get stronger with each passing day. The fight scenes are fantastic and the villain is seriously creepy. The ending really leaves you question what is happening to Tara and what crazy adventure is she going to be put into next. I highly recommend this series and I put it on the top list for must read of 2011.
RECOMMENDATION: This is a young adult novel with some kick butt action and lots of love triangle drama. Fans of Jennifer Esteps Mythos Series and Richelle Meads Vampire Academy will want to get their hands on Cold Blood a.s.a.p!
My Synopsis: Tara’s mother and grandmother have decided that she will be safer away from Frederick Falls and have shipped her off to boarding school – an exclusive school for Hunters named Wood Pointe. They figure that not only will she be safe among Hunters, but she will also have a chance to train. No one asked Tara what she wanted to do, of course, but she is not able to do anything about it, so she is uprooted and sent packing. However, word has circulated that she is a dirty blood, and most of the students will have nothing to do with her, if they aren’t outright antagonistic. She does manage to make a couple friends – Cambria and Logan are misfits like she is. She is assigned to a boy named Alex – a Senior – to assist her in catching up with her training. Things become complicated when Alex appears to be falling for her, leaving her conflicted due to her feelings for Alex. Also, Miles is stalking her, and alumni of the school are going missing. Will Tara have to make a decision between Alex and Wes? Will she be able to avoid Miles? And what is happening to the alumni and other Hunters who are going missing?
My Thoughts: There are two huge plot issues that make me have a bit of trouble with my suspension of disbelief – first, most of the Hunters start training when they are as young as five. How is Tara supposed to get caught up, showing up to this school when she is 17? Also, there is an incident where her roommate – her archrival – destroys every piece of her clothing in a fit of spite; how is Tara supposed to explain that to anyone? Yet she somehow manages to have clothing by a couple days later. But overall I was able to move past that and enjoy the book a great deal. The plot is becoming thicker, the action sequences are intense, and the characters are developing in a very interesting manner. I enjoyed this book a great deal and I’ll definitely be looking for the next book in the series, whenever it is scheduled to come out. Recommended!
Tara has been excepted to the prestigious hunter's Wood Point Academy! She should be thrilled as it's the best hunters school, but she is miles from home, miles from Wes and her crazy cousin, Miles De'Luca, is constantly ringing her and freaking her out by promising that she will be his! Plus Tara isn't exactly welcomed in the ranks of the hunters due to her "dirty" blood! There are some bright sides though, Cambria and Logan who quickly bring Tara into their fold, and Alex, her trainer! Can Tara survive in the hunter infested waters and stay sane??
Here's me thinking that Dirty Blood was amazing, and it is, but this one was so much better!!! More action, more friends for Tara, an amazing setting and a completely crazy bad dude! The only down side is there isn't much Wes. But... there is Alex. The hawwwwt trainer who has to bring Tara up to an acceptable level, since she can't run a mile without being winded. Alex hit's Tara up the wrong way at the start by saying something about her dirty blood, but their friendship soon blossoms.
I absolutely love how this author writes incredible characters! Ones you can't help but fall in love with. Cambria and Logan were awesome!!!! I want them as BFFs ;) They really help Tara cope with the nasty comments made about her and are there for her no matter what. Alex is another character I enjoyed. He is the brooding type, the one where you know more is to come. Tara is as kick ass and sassy as always and is one of my favourite characters ever!!
In all, this is an incredible addition to the series and sees the characters grow a lot. It's an action packed, edge of your seat book that will leave you wanting more. I loved this series when I first read them and I love them even more after listening to the audios!! Highly recommend.
Kelly Pruner is amazing as Tara!!! She really knows her character and brings her to life. She has a great range of tones as well for the rest of the characters and gave her all to the story. Brilliant performance!!
"Cold Blood" is another good read in the Dirty Blood series. Tara has been sent off to the Wood Point Academy by her mother. She is none too pleased but promises to behave herself. That was before she discovered how prejudice the students are against people of mixed blood or a "hybrid" as she calls it. She manages to make friends with Cambria and Logan, two misfits. They help make life a little less miserable for her especially with her evil roommate, Victoria.
Miles, her evil nemesis, manages to keep in communications with Tara and promises to reunite with her as soon as he "finalizes his plans." He will not tell her exactly what that means though. To make matters worse, Tara and Wes hardly talk and she is becoming more and more attracted to Alex, her trainer. Of course, George has not given up either and continues to call.
Tara's family continues to keep her in the dark about many things. However, Cambria helps her along the way. Additionally, her temper seems to mount with each coming day and there appears to be something different with her that no one can quite put a finger on.
I enjoyed the action and mystery in this book. Nevertheless, I was troubled by the love triangle, square love........whatever that is going on. This is very symptomatic of YA books right now. I must say I was disappointed. It would be nice to read a book where the herione is not swooned over by every guy and for once remains true to her so called love of her life!!!!!!!! I will say that Hildenbrand does a better job at presenting this material than most authors. You can almost understand why Tara was tempted elsewhere.
I am anxious to say how this all resolves itself. However, if this love quadrangle continues.............I'm out!
This book picks up immediately after the stellar first installment. Tara has been shipped off to a special type of boarding school for hunters. Not surprisingly, being a “dirty blood” is something nobody on campus appreciates. The feelings range from hostile to slightly less hostile. The only people who appear to accept her for who she is are her new friends Cambria and Logan. This misfit crew ends up being the only thing that keeps Tara grounded through her madness filled first semester.
So where is Wes, right? Well, due to Jack’s injury at the end of the previous book, Wes is being pushed into the position of leader a little sooner than anticipated. This includes touring around and getting officially introduced to other allies. What about phone calls? Well, the hunter school appears to be employing a cell phone blocker, or is just so far out that they don’t get good service on whatever provider Tara has. It’s sad, because I really wanted more Wes in this story. Without Wes actively in the picture, this leaves the field wide open for Tara’s new trainer, Alex. He’s broody and mysterious and, of course, begins the dreaded love triangle. While these two fight at first meeting, that passion morphs into an almost-sort-of romance. Boo. I am firmly on team Wes, no matter his transgressions in this book.
Oh, so besides the interpersonal stuff, there’s also the lurking Miles threat that comes to a head at the end of this book. No, we don’t get everything wrapped up (what kind of a series would it be if that happened?), but we get some really interesting ways that changes are coming in Tara’s life. I am eager to dive into the next book, where Tara hopefully gets (maybe) a little bit of a less stressful school year.
Cold Blood takes a leap into the Hunter’s world. After the battle that concluded Dirty Blood; Tara find herself enrolled in the Wood Point academy for Hunters. At her Grandmother’s demand Tara agrees to attend the prestigious Hunter Academy, but little does she know that lies ahead. Jack and Fess have explained the reluctance that Werewolves and Hunters alike hold towards mixed blood. The reality of this truth becomes a harsh reality when Tara finds herself with more enemies than she can count. Tara’s life becomes a living nightmare.
Fortunately, two of the school misfits Logan and Cambria accept Tara with open arms. Cambria seems to have a bit of a dark side, but Logan seems altogether genuine. Alex which happens to be Tara’s tutor/trainer is a delectable addition to this novel. His shocking outburst the first day of school will leave readers questioning her character, but as the layers peel back his is just as twisted and a complicated as Tara. It is easy to see Tara struggle with feeling for his character. Personally, I must add that in my opinion he is no Wes. I was frustrated with her for allowing this emotional attachment to build in this book. Although, it does add for some obvious male dominance altercations that adds a little spice for the reader.
Overall, this was another good read for this loveable series. I honestly expected a little more action and intensity after book one; but as an avid reader I can also recognize the need for the build that this novel offers. I look forward to the next book, and can’t wait to see what is to come. BOOKWHISPERER RECOMMEND!!
I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series, Dirty Blood, but this book took it to a whole new level. It has a little bit of everything; werewolves, magic, and at times, I even got a Harry Potter feel from it. I was fortunate enough to read this book before it’s release, and I’m sad the next one isn’t out already.
Coming from a guy’s perspective, you’re always wary of the romance aspect of these stories. It’s a part of so many of them, but with Cold Blood, it’s very well done. The romance doesn’t rule the story, and we aren’t dealing with a sappy girl who is constantly crying about heartache. No, Tara is a strong, female lead, and this story has a perfect balance between action, suspense, romance, magic, and monsters.
Hildenbrand has put together a sequel that really steps things up. This book is longer than the first, and action packed. The timeline coincides perfectly from where we left off, and the characters are awesome. One of the new characters, Cambria, is my absolute favorite. She’s witty, funny, sarcastic, and a goth. What more could you want from a supporting character? Did I mention she has some pretty awesome powers? I hope as the series continues, there is more of her.
The overall story was fantastic. Hildenbrand wraps the story up with a solid ending, and still manages to leave you wanting more. As this series progresses, I’m falling deeper in love with the Tara. Her character, her destiny, and the mystery surrounding just who she is, and what she’ll be capable of, has a solid grip around me. The next book in the series can’t come soon enough.
I really enjoyed this book. I have the circles under my eyes to prove it ;). While I enjoyed the first book in this series, Dirty Blood, I loved this book. I was unsure when she was going to go to "Hunter" school if this book would be too cliche for me and was very pleasantly surprised that it was not. I was a bit stumped by the mystery in this book (love that) and really enjoyed seeing all of the interpersonal relationships as they grew and/or morphed. Heather included the darkness the hunters and weres would have and did not shy away from it. By the same token, Heather wrote a book I would feel comfortable recommending to teens. That is a fine line to walk and she did it beautifully.
Ok, so I am just going to put it out there. I am mad at a couple of characters from this book for being less than who I had hoped they were. Why am I mentioning this? Simply because I know that if characters actually make me mad then they are becoming "real" to me and that means the book did the job it set out to do. I can not wait to read the next book when it comes out.
I am in love with this series. It is AWESOME!! I thought after reading Dirty Blood that it couldn't get better than that but I was unbelievably wrong because this book was crazy good. I loved the character's in this book. I missed Wes a little but he was there when it counted and the ending was heart stopping. I can't wait for book 3. It can't come out quick enough. I would highly recommend this series to anyone, it was wonderful and I am definitely thrilled I found a new kick a** series to read!!
I cannot wait to see the next installment in this series.
This book kept me wanting more, from the beginning until the end. The book moved along at a great pace and was easy to read and understand.
The characters are extremely likable and you cannot help but love them.
This book has a bit of everything, romance, mystery, and adventure all combined with trying to be normal teenagers.
Heather Hildenbrand has done an excellent job of creating a new and exciting world with lovable characters. Cannot wait to see what the future holds for these characters.
This is book 2 of The Dirty Blood series by author Heather Hildenbrand.
When Tara get into a school to learn how to be a hunter she does not expect know what to expect out of school but what she finds was not on her way to become a hunter.
I am enjoying how the character of Tara seems to be growing and not staying like a teenager but coming into an adult. The interaction of her character with others makes the book interesting to read.
This is for any paranormal book reader who enjoys some adventure and mystery with their read.
Being sent to Wood Point for Hunter training is not a choice Tara would have made for herself. But with everything going on around her, and especially after recent events, that's where she needs to be in order to learn how to defend herself, not only against werewolves but something that is coming, something huge. And even though it's something connected to her crazy cousin, Miles De'Luca, who wants her to rule the world by his side, it's bigger than both of them, bigger than any of them could ever guess. And when she learns some of her genealogy, she discovers links to people in her life she didn't realize were there, and they could prove either her undoing or her place in the society to come. And though being the center of attention, and not in a good way, at Wood Point proves difficult, there's one instructor who sees her for more than she seems. And holding himself at friendship isn't going to be the easiest thing to do, for either of them.
I liked the first book, loved the story though it had some holes. Several of those were filled in this second book. The story became more tense and kept me more on edge. We learn some of what's going on in her crazy cousin's mind and see just how difficult it is to be born a hybrid hunter/werewolf. It was fascinating watching her grow into herself and discover how strong she really was in so many different ways. She opened up and bloomed under Alex's tutelage, and I think she discovered some thing about herself that are going to be important for her in her future. This author has a special way of weaving a paranormal story. Her background characters are likeable and just as exciting to watch as Tara. It's hard to tell who is on her side and who is not, which is a great way to keep the reader in suspense. I think we're going to have some surprises ahead that we didn't expect, and Tara is going to keep getting stronger and pushing through them. She's facing some scary things in her future, and I'm looking forward to tagging along to find out where the story goes.
Like the overall premise of this series, but this book wasn’t my favorite. Tara had little growth from book 1 into this book; she still has little common sense and makes idiotic choices, I’m not into ditzy type of characters. By the end of this book, she still sucks and seems just as weak as she was in book 1. Also, not much happens in this book until the last 15 percent or so. Tara is forced to go to a hunter school and do hunter training, it’s pretty much like a private school but they do fight training too. I’ve liked plenty of academy reads, but this one had way too much mean girl antics. Very annoying and not something I care to read about; all the mean girl junk really slowed the story down. Pretty much everyone at this hunter school is a racist jerk to Tara because she’s half hunter/half shifter. Add in a new annoying friend in Cambria; can’t stand her, and a love triangle that is too much like cheating for me, and I was annoyed a lot reading this book. I was leaning toward a 2 rating because of how poorly Tara acted about the love triangle and that she barely stands up for herself, but I’m actually interested to see how this series pans out, so I’m going with a 3. Despite me not liking the author’s choices, I do actually like the writing style. I really hope Tara stops lacking in the brains department, and being so whiny. Plus, I have the audio with the first 4 books, so that’s also an incentive to continue the series. By the way, the narrator of the book set does a great job! I’d recommend listening if you do decide to read this series.
