The newest title to date in this growing art instruction series summarizes basic art principles for art students and ambitious amateurs, and then presents several dry-medium projects for them to complete. The projects are presented in order of increased difficulty and are supplemented with advice and practical suggestions for achieving professional-looking results when drawing with the dry media of charcoal, chalk, and sanguine.
I am new to charcoal, chalk and sanguine, but I am not an amateur artist (I make my living as a painter). The information in this book had good basic information in it, but I thought the illustrations/demonstrations looked quite amateur (I realize that people have different tastes, but these were really basic!). The demonstrations were also quite repetitive from medium to medium and never showed what advanced artists in each medium are capable of--and so it seems like charcoal, chalk etc. aren't very nice! I guess if you are truly new at art this might be a handy book, but I think more experienced folks can find a better book.
This book is fantastic! I would purchase this book. It was designed with visual learning artists in mind! Every page has color photos and step-by-step instructions on different drawing techniques from start to finish. This little 64 page book is well laid out, concise and very instructive. I would recommend this for beginning drawing students. The pictures are wonderfully helpful!
