Fifty years ago, an event happened in the White Mountains of New Hampshire that had the potential of wiping out the entire human population within that region. The event was quickly addressed by a local group trained to handle this kind of crisis. The death toll was more than anyone had expected, but the event was ultimately silenced, hidden from the radar of the authorities. Since that time, things have been quiet... until now. Charlie and Grace have a shared to summit the tallest peak in each of the 50 states. Five years ago, their journey began at Mt. George, the tallest mountain in the northeast. After Charlie sustained a damaging injury during their ascent, Grace was afraid they might never realize that goal. Five years later, they've come back to where it all began. However, injuries and unpredictable weather patterns won' be the only challenges; they'll now have to find a way to survive an outbreak of the undead. Charlie and Grace must find a way off the mountain, alive, before they succumb to the zombie plague. But there's a secret, buried beneath three-hundred years of lies and deceit. To find a fresh and unique zombie novel is quite a challenge nowadays. However, author Daniel Loubier created just that by entering the saturated zombie genre with Dead Summit, a novel that combines action, love, the outdoors and the undead in a very distinctive way.

Zombies, mountain hiking, the woods---yes!

The novel had all the elements I look for in a good zombie book. Unfortunately, a few things pulled me out of the book as I read. I had a hard time "connecting" with most of the characters. There were too many mood shifts and stretches of reality (ex.---a badly mangled and disemboweled person able to hold a cogent conversation for several pages?) to root for the people, or even care if they got eaten.

The second issue was the constant need to TELL me what I just read. Without cutting and pasting exact text, there were far too many incidents of characters interacting, followed by exposition reiterating what I just read. If character A is crying while they speak to character B, lamenting the loss of a friend, I don't need another pair of sentences that say, "Character A was said because they missed Character C." I got that by reading the scene.

But there's plenty to like. Good, solid descriptions of rotting corpses and marvelous landscapes are always welcome, and you'll find those in here. There is also an intriguing back story to the whole thing that is well thought out.

Again, to be clear, I didn't hate the book by any means. It starts a bit slow (aside from the prologue), but does pick up. I'm glad I got a chance to read it, it just doesn't read in a way that I find engaging.

This is a book that I won on goodreads giveaway. While I am always grateful to win a book, I do not understand why I entered to win this one. I don't really like to read about zombies. BUT, if you are a person who does, then you will enjoy this book.
While it was predictably a zombie fest, there were a couple of left field moments that made it interesting. I just didn't like that there wasn't enough background on the 'curse' or virus. I would have liked to have had Mr. Loubier delve into the Native American curse a bit more.
My one big question is why didn't someone come looking for all the people who disappeared, especially in the latter years? That was left a bit open ended for me. But all in all, not a bad read.

I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

It was a quick and fun zombie book. The mountain setting is what sets this book apart from other zombie novels I have read. Nice dose of feeling trapped and isolated. Just enough blood and gore. The plot moves around enough to not be repetitive and boring. The main character is just likeable enough, but she got kind of annoying at times. There's nothing overly original going on in the book, but zombies stories don't always have to be drastically different to be enjoyable. I like how the story takes place during the zombie attack instead of a long time after like a lot of books do. The ending wasn't horrible, but it was the weakest moment for me.

Zombies are my favorite type of horror movie because they really do scare me and often that just does not translate to books but this time it did. This book was genuinely creepy and I found it took me longer to read because I didn't want to read it at night. I loved the atmosphere and found the characters fun as well. There were situations here that were unique and made you think about how you might react. It really was the type of story you can sink into, and when that happens with horror it can be scary in that great sort of way. Well done, very well done. I look forward to more from Daniel Loubier.
