Obi: Gerbil on a Mission

Rate this book
Obi's on a mission to go where no gerbil has gone before - outside the house!

There's a new pet at Obi the gerbil's house, and he's bigger, furrier, and more slobbery than Obi. And he's getting all the attention. But when the puppy escapes out the door and runs away, Obi sets out on a mission to bring him back. There are many obstacles, from a hungry owl to a giant dog to snarky cats in Obi's own backyard. But with the perseverance and pluck she demonstrated in the popular first Obi book, Obi overcomes the problems and brings the puppy safely home. With clever cartoon illustrations to punch up the comedy, this funny, adventurous sequel will leave you squeaking for more.

DELANEY, M.C. Obi: Gerbil on a Mission. 199p. Dial. May 2012. ISBN: 978-0-8037-3727-3. $16.99. F.

Gr 3-5
Sweet Obi the Gerbil is back with an all new animal cast in this fast paced sequel. Rachel gets a puppy for her birthday and Obi is burning with envy when Rachel gives the puppy Obi’s name! The jealous gerbil wants to get rid of Kenobi once and for all and shows the pup how to get outside. Obi realizes she’s made a huge mistake when Kenobi doesn’t return that night or the following day. Summoning all of her jedi gerbil courage, Obi sets out to into the great wide world to reunite the pup with her beloved Rachel. Quirky black and white illustrations support the text. A comical story highlighting the consequences of acting rash and not listening to your conscience. Kids will love visiting the old household pets while being introduced to funny, fresh characters along the way. Recommended to fans of the first Obi adventure and The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary.

The second fun book in the children's series about a gerbil named Obi. My five and a half year old son loves these books. This one had a lot more adventure than the first because Obi goes outside the house. My son has a stuffed dog he's named Kenobi after the puppy in this story. Kenobi is truly a puppy in every way and it's funny to read the voice for him. We're on to the third book already!

An independent reader/beginning chapter book text that is second in a series. The pet antics & situations may appeal to young readers. I would have enjoyed it more, I think, if Obi, the protagonist, was also the narrator. The third person voice feels disjointed.
