I was a bit disappointed with this second book to the series. The story never really gets going until very late in the book and then it's over. The action scenes were quick and sudden and I at least had a hard time following what was going on every now and then. Also I would have liked to read more about the prince as his part in the story was very small. But perhaps that comes in the next book.

Dragoneer Book 2

The Dragoneers are finally united as the Kingdom starts to rebuild. New players emerge and the future becomes more complicated as the Confliction nears, bringing an entirely new terror to confront.

The action never stops for long and the story keeps you guessing as the heroes face overwhelming situations, no one is safe!

Bonus Content: There are two Wardstone short stories included at the end!!

Things are heating up!

So much happens in this installment! The Dragoneers find their home, they find Crimzon, a dragon that has waited for them for a century. There is a traitor in their midst, Richard is saved, the King is slain, the Nightshade returns…so much is yet to come!
I am really enjoying reading this series!

More Star Wars - Dragoneer Version.

This time we find out what happens when the Prince is revived, meet another two Dragoneers and their dragons, new monsters to tackle, the Sarax, a sea serpent and of course, more battle action on several fronts.
Plus, two short Wardstone tales and the first three chapters of book 3, ‘The Confection’.

In this installment of the story of the dragoneers, we get to meet a new member and also a new threat to mankind. The Sarax are a formidable bunch that will be hard to beat. The plus side is that now the dragoneers have met Crimzon and have have an idea on how to defeat them.

I love this author’s writing style, because the imagery is so detailed it allows you to “see” what is going on. I am hooked on this series and cannot wait to read the next installment. Each new character just brings that much more to the story.

I give this book 5***** stars as it has been awhile since a book has been able to pull me in so deep. I highly recommend that you at least put this book on your TBR list and give it a try. I don’t believe you would regret it.

Cold Hearted Son of a Witch – Dragoneers Saga Book II – Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat and Think With Your Taste Buds – Desserts

‘The Crown Prince lay peacefully, as if asleep, inside the currently green-colored magical field. He was afflicted with the Goblin King’s poison, a terrible stuff that had maddened and then slowly corroded from the inside out anyone who’d breathed it. If the stasis failed before an antidote was concocted, he would surely die. Jenka knew Herald was right about what had to be done, but that didn’t relieve the urge Jenka was feeling to just ignore common sense and keep his word by saving his fellow Dragoneer.

The Dragoneer’s Lair, as the hall was now called, was an intensely morbid place. Queen Alvazina was often found there arguing with her husband or weeping over her son’s body. Like Mysterian, she was a witch of the Hazeltine, and she fully understood the magnitude of the situation. She knew Richard’s life hung in the balance, and that there was no certainty about the antidotal potion Mysterian hoped to brew. Her sorrow seemed to sap the hope out of some of the others, thus the hall was sometimes the quietest place in Mainsted.’

In his first book, Mathias introduced us to Jenka De Swasso, Rikky Camille and Zahrellion, along with their dragons Jade, Silva and Crystal. He took us through the battle with the Gravelbone and the poison that put Prince Richard into his state of suspended animation. We saw King Blanchard and Linux change places for the benefit of the war. We also learned the prophecy of what is called the “Confliction” that will be fought by 10 – 5 Dragoneers and 5 dragons. But what is the “confliction” and who are the other 2 Dragoneers? Where will they come from? Where will the battle take place? Will the antidote, once brewed and administered to Prince Richard, counteract the poison and bring him back to help fight in the confliction? And will Linux and the King finally make the switch back into their own bodies?

It didn’t take me long to read M. R. Mathias’ first book. It was packed with action, excitement, suspense and a little humor now and then, making it a fast enjoyable read. When I read his second book in this series Cold Hearted Son of a Witch, I expected more of the same. Well, he didn’t disappoint me. It has everything that the 1st book had and more.

I’ve never been a big fan of fantasy books but this author is changing that. He could carry this book into a series of 10 and I’ll read, and am sure, enjoy every one. I love reading this series.

This was the second installment in the Young Adult Fantasy thriller series. The story continues on from where the first book left it, Gravelbone has been defeated but the Prince to the Kingdom had been infected with a horrible affliction, the only solution is to fetch rare mushrooms from a far off distant island. Yet, due to the young age of Jenka's dragon Jade, they cannot hope to attempt such a long distance over the sea. Jenka, now totally inlove with Zah, wants to let her know how he feels yet she still remains reluctant and leaves with Rikky out across the sea without a decent goodbye. Jenka with his heart confusing his thoughts is assigned the job to escort the King's Rangers back to the Kingsmen's Keep. Yet all of this seems futile when more Dragoneers appear onto the scene and it becomes very clear that the confliction will arrive soon, bringing with it horrors worse than Gravelbone.

The imagery of this well descripted world has been expanded into the world beyond the single kingdom as the Dragoneers gather from afar, and now the Temple of Dou will play a pivitol role in the story as just beyond it in the mountains is a castle custom made for the Dragoneers. Yet more than that, there is also the hidden danger lurking. Hidden deep within a cavern, frozen for centuries and nearing escape are the horrorible creatures which the Dragoneers will now see as their new enemy. Worries of the Kingdom start to seem insignificant as this new threat could destroy both man and creature, and the darkness of some men seek to move to control this danger rather than to halt it. Can the Five Dragoneers with their dragons halt the alien evil beasts? Will Jenka ever hear words of love from Zah? Will the prince live, and whatsmore, has the corruption from Gravelbone upon his mind lingered?

It was great to read this second book of The Dragoneers Saga as I really enjoyed the first one, it was great to see the individual charachters move on in their stories and I enjoyed how the two new Dragoneers are introduced. Once again the story finishes at an interesting point, the five have now met and bonded yet where will fate lead them from here? Only the next book will tell!! I know my favorite charachter in this book has definately been Rikky and his peg leg, his deep connection with his dragon, his strength and determination in this book continues to increase, to the point of possible attracting the attention of an admirer, also his magical knowledge and ability has increased greatly with the aquisition of a dragon tear. I just wished the book was longer !!!

Second in M.R. Matthias’ teen fantasy epic, The Dragoneers Saga, Cold-Hearted son of a witch picks up the story at the close of The Royal Dragoneers . With so many characters and a well-drawn world so thoroughly imagined and described, it’s probably best to start the story with book one. But eager readers, willing to wait to learn who’s who, will jump into book two without difficulty. Pleasingly, all the characters are there, teenagers growing older at a convincing rate, and even young March from the author’s short novella The First Dragoneer plays a part, his arrival adding even greater breadth to the world that carries the tale.

There’s a king inhabiting a sorcerer’s body, a sleeping prince, young would-be lovers wondering how to combine commitment to cause with commitment to each other, friendship, dragons, betrayal, and delightfully real relationships in this novel. The combination of immediate and long-term threat is nicely portrayed with all its conflicting interests, as are the problems of everyday needs during earth-shattering danger, making the characters very real and relatable. The author’s descriptions bring the world to life, and his skill with battle scenes and their gruesome aftermath is masterful. Wars fought in this world hurt; friends die, and those left behind deal with grief while riding on to save the survivors.

Genuine, gritty, well-imagined, with pleasing reality and humor seasoning fantasy and fear, this second book fulfills all the promise of the first, and more, leaving me eager to move on to book three and glad I’ve had the chance to revisit the series.

Disclosure: I received a free ecopy of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Cold Hearted Son of a Witchis Book Two in the Dragoneers Saga by M.R. Mathias, another stunning work that features Jenka and his dragon, Jade and other compelling characters and creatures. Accompanied by the half-elf, Lemmy, Jenka is escorting the king to Kingsmens Keep and the journey is as treacherous and it is adventurous. Will they be able to weave themselves through the dangers and come out alive and in intact?

On another front, the dragoneers Zahrellion and Rikky are on an equally dangerous mission to save the life of the Prince Richard from a very deadly poison. They must locate a special mushroom that can cure him and they have to do it before its too late. Will they be able to triumph over the multiple challenges and find the cure before the prince dies? The good guys still have many battles to fight and an enemy who doesnt seem to relent.

M.R. Mathias, as usual, has delivered another highly entertaining work that will have readers reading into the late hours of the night. Youll have the same fast-paced that has characterized his earlier works, characters that evolve in ways that will surprise and wow readers. This one is the work of genius, a must read for fans of fantasy.

The first page got me, and I knew from the start that this is M.R. Mathias as I've known him. I'm glad how easy it is nowadays to discover fictional gems. Gone are the days when I have to travel far, or scour bookstores to look for much-awaited titles in my town. Some parts of the book may feel slow-paced, but I enjoy how it's been used for character development and building momentum. The twists are carefully placed and would ever so often come unexpectedly. Compared to other fantasy books I've read, Mathias novels don't take much time to build conflicts. The problem with other books is that when they take a very long time to build momentum, the readers' interest may fizzle out and the conclusion would feel subdued. I can see M.R. Mathias progressing in every series, and it probably won't take long until we see his name side by side other famous and classic fantasy writers. I'm also a frustrated fantasy writer and have written a few fan fiction, but reading his works makes me feel like I still have a lot to learn. I haven't even reached a speck of what he has accomplished, but I hope I'll get there someday.

This part of The Dragoneers Saga is really action-packed, but you come through some very interestingly depicted characters as well. For example, introductions of Marcherion and Lemmy (who is probably my favourite character right after Zah) are nicely covered in the story. However, there could be more developed Linux and Lanxe POV. I wasn’t quite persuaded about the quality of the book in the beginning (in part II called Moonlit Serpent Shit), but it gets better when you begin feel thrill about the Confliction and there are some clever details (e.g.: Clover in connection with Dragoneers emblem). In ‘Cold Hearted Son Of A Witch’ the biggest ‘bad WTF’ moment (see my review of ‘The Royal Dagoneers’) is probably when you find out that those nasty cannibalic Sarax come out of steel star ship. It somehow doesn’t fit the whole story – to me at least, connection of dragons and aliens doesn’t work.

A refreshingly original narrative that is character-driven; which showcases the author's rich imagination. The Dragoneers is one of my favorite series to date. Cold Hearted son of a Witch doesn't fall short as a second installment to the brilliant - The Royal Dragoneers. Just like other books by Mathias, this follows an old style fantasy, but taken to a new height. People who just started with fantasy genre, especially young adults would enjoy this book. Bloody confrontations and warfare are common themes in his books, but nothing over the top. Dragons and magic can alter your perception of reality, but the talented M.R. Mathias brought the story to the human level by weaving powerful dialogues, epic journey and larger than life characters. The First Dragoneer has captured my attention, and I've been follower up to the second book. I'll be writing another review for Confliction. I think of unwinding first before reading another Mathias novel because of the overwhelming, often depressing, scenes from this series.

This is an intelligent fantasy, both stimulating and mesmerizing. But that alone can't describe the whole book. This series has kept me company through the years, and most of the scenes are still clear from my memory. I have read a wide stretch of fantasy books for young and adults, but this still has a hold on me. Cold Hearted Son of a Witch continued the story of Zah, Rikky, Jenka and Jade. The addition of Lemmy made the story more dazzling. Mr. Mathias proved that you don't need to make a 700-page, or several volumes of fantasy novels to make an impressive story. It took me longer to finish the series compared to the books I've read in the past because I was juggling my new job and babysitting for my wife's niece that time. But even so, the story stuck with me that I often take excerpts from the book and share them during storytelling session with my kids. Of course, I carefully choose which scenes to share. M.R. Mathias has a knack in shifting tones and voices in every chapter. Although the battles may seem hurried in some parts, they are on a large scale and pretty gruesome.

This is a well-imagined book with lots of typical fantasy elements. This second book fulfills all the promise of the first book leaving me eager to move on to book three and happy I’ve discovered this series.

But let’s review book two. Continuing the adventures of The Dragoneers M. R. Mathias adds jealousy, longing, and survival to the emotional tie the reader already has with each character. Each character has their own trials that each of them must overcome in order to work as a team like they are meant to be. The reader has no choice but to give in to this charming tale of heroism. I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about each Dragoneer. The imagery M. R. Mathias paints with his words leaves deep imprints on the reader and has them wanting to read more.

I loved the progression we are getting with this book. The characters seem so much more well-rounded and developed in this book. I think the dragons are so awesome and we get more of them with this book. This is a fitting follow-up to book one.

The dragoneers led by Jenka are back. They are on another adventure this time with some very interesting twists. We also have some new characters that help round it out. I like this book because it was a good length and had plenty of action. I was not overly fond of the addition of space aliens. That through me off. I just want to read about dragons and such.

The book read fast and had a nice pace. It picked up nicely from book one. There was no awkwardness. The characters are all good and the dragons are really good. The dragons have a little bigger role in this book and they take advantage of that. I love how he makes them seem almost human. They have such distinct personalities.

Jenka is not the best leader but he tries. My favorite dragoneer is Rikky. There is just something about him. I thought the battles were choreographed really well. I would have liked a little more blood and gore but that is just a personal preference. Since this is written for the y/a audience I can see where there shouldn’t be too much violence. This was a nice book.

I loved this second installment of M. R. Mathias' Dragoneers Saga! If you like high fantasy mixed with a little Sci-Fi, then you will love this book as much as I did! We get to meet 2 more Dragoneers in the story, as well as see the beginning of The Confliction with the introduction of the Sarax creatures who want to devour all life they meet. Jenka has a new rival for Zah's affections, as well as a possible rival for the leadership of the Dragoneers. Rikky's healing powers continue to grow just as his friendship with the other Dragoneers grows as well. Aikira, a beautiful ebon girl, and Marcherion, a strong Outlander, have joined the three Dragoneers to save their world. Prince Richard has become evil due to Gravelbone's capture of him. He ends up killing his father (or who he thinks is his father) so that he can rule the kingdom. Hopefully in the next book, Prince Richard will be cured of his curse. The Sarax have been stopped for now by being encased by magical power within their starship. But I bet they will once again be a major enemy in the last Dragoneers book.

I can't help but believe that M R Mathias is one of the hardest working writers in fantasy. With a library of work behind him and almost all of it top-notch, you can't help but be excited to dive right in and the second book in the Dragoneers Saga, Cold Hearted Son of a Witch just continues that high quality you can expect from Mathias.

In the second installment, we see the dragons are back and Zahrellion and Rikky are on a new quest to save a Prince who has been poisoned. At the same time, Jenka and Jade are escorting Kings rangers back to the keep before being sidetracked by a quest to find the Temple of Dou. With all of the events in motion, it won't take long before we see the Dragoneers coming together and I have to say the character development in this one really blows away the first novel. Sure, we had previously met them but in this chapter of the series we get to KNOW them.

Adventure, laughter, friendship, and so much more, Mathias is a master of the fantasy genre and one author whose work you'll just never want to put down!

Supposedly this is meant to be a transitional book. What does he mean by that? I would assume all the books in a series should be equal. I am not a writer but that is my take on it. I did not like the shortness of the book but I liked the story. It carried over well from the first Royal Dragoneers book. There are so many things happening though it can get confusing.

But there is one big surprise that blew my socks off. I was in no way expecting anything like this. Just think of your regular dragon mythical fantasy book than add in some science fiction. That equals this book. Mathias is either a genius or a madman. I am leaning towards genius. But there is probably a touch of the madman too.
Even though I did not like the thought of a transition book I was happy with the story. It isn't any less good than the first book. If he didn't say this was a transitional book I would have just thought it was a short book.

This is a shorter book then the first book in the series. It took me no time at all to read it. I was a little disappointed in the length but I got over it. This book has more depth and the characters are fleshed out more. Zah is featured prominently and it was great seeing her come into her own. She is just beginning to tap her powers. I see there are two more books so far in the series and he plans to write more. That makes me very happy.

Jenka is an interesting guy. He is maturing and making less dumb mistakes. There is also a blossoming romance between him and Zah. It isn't the icky sappy kind that would ruin a good book. It is really just a side note. There are still plenty of big battles and quests in this book. Jenka's dragon Jade gets a bigger role as well. If you enjoy reading fantasy novels this is a good series. If you haven't read fantasy novels before it is also a good starter series. All age groups will enjoy it. It doesn't seem to cater to a specific group.

You have to know that the only time I paused in reading this series was when I caught a bad flu in the winter. I was hospitalized and while recovering at home. I have completely fallen for the characters and their dragons. I love how the author made the characters very likeable amidst their imperfections. You see these people in this generation and you'll probably be enemies with them, but in the book, you get to know them on a deeper level: their drives, their individual conflicts and their personal struggles. This author stole my nights the way only the likes of Steven Erikson and Ursula Le Guin could. The characters seemed to jump off every page. Mr. Mathias offers an unforgettable mixture of magic, intrigue and revenge. This could be a challenging read even for seasoned fantasy readers, but the first rule to enjoy this book is to drop your defenses and prejudices, and just give in. If you can do that, you're in for a thrilling ride.

There are dragons, magic and a lot more in this book. If you like to read books in this vein I promise you will not be disappointed. There is everything I want in a book plus some very interesting side trips. I very much like where this story is going.

Jenka is a great main character. He has grown up a lot since book one. He has come into his own so to speak. I think a lot of that has to do with Zahrellion. She has matured him. He can still be impulsive and get himself into sticky situations though. I hope that never changes. It is one of the things I really like about him. He is flawed and has to work really hard to get things right.

Jade his dragon gets some more face time in this book. That is something I liked a lot. Jenka encounters the Temple of Dou for the first time and unleashes something very scary. It is pretty awesome in fact. I would recommend any Mathias book but The Royal Dragoneers books are my favorites.

Dynamite! This book outshines The Royal Dragoneers (book one). The book does a good job transitioning the story. Jenka and the other dragoneers have grown up and become formidable. They are no longer that hapless band of misfits that can’t get it together. Zah and Jenka are exploring their feelings for each other but it is not a “love story”. They are more focused on their tasks and battling evil. I liked reading this book. It did not follow a typical pattern but went off in a whole new direction.

There are some very interesting things going on in this book. Let’s just say that there are things I would have never thought of. M.R. Mathias is turning the fantasy novel on its head. He is incorporating things (like aliens) that should have no business in a book like this. It works though. I am impressed with his storytelling and look forward to many more years of reading his books. He thinks outside the box and keeps it fresh.

This is another compelling story from M.R. Mathias. I really liked book one so this was a no brainer to read. I like the Jenka character and almost all the characters. King Richard seems to be a little snaky to me. But the dragons are great. They all have individual personalities and talents. I think Frost is my favorite. They are all cool but it is the “frostiest”. Lol! I love dragons for sure. I just wish they were real. How cool would that be!

Even though this book was on the shorter side it still was worth the cost to read it. I like all the dragoneers but Jenka is leader and the book focuses on him the most. This has a lot of fights or battles and a little romance too. There is also some humor even though it is dark humor. I find myself really getting into the books written by M.R. Mathias. I wasn’t sure at first but now I look forward to them. He has a fan in me.

The story continues from the first book and it's just as exciting as The Royal Dragoneers was. I am not a huge fantasy fan. I like horror fantasy books and that is what I typically read. It's true that I don't have a lot of experience with this type of fantasy book. But I know that I like it. I love these dragons and I love their riders. So maybe my review is more sincere since I am a “newbie” to this type of fantasy novel.

The plot is paced well and the story is action packed. It was very exciting and very hard to put down. It usually takes me a little bit of time to read a book, but I finished this one in a couple hours. I just had to know what happened next and didn’t want to stop. The book is also full of dry humor and wit, which is something that I really enjoy. And I am finding out is a trait in many Mathias books. I loved laughing out loud when I read some of passages. So even though I thought this book was a little too short I still am giving it five stars.

It didn’t take me long to read the first book. It was packed with action, suspense and some humor now and then making it a fast good read. When I read this book Cold Hearted Son of a Witch I expected more of the same and I got it. It has everything that the first book had and more. Although this book is short it packs a lot into those pages.

I’ve never been a huge fan of fantasy books but this series is starting to change that. I love reading this series so far. The imagery is phenomenal it makes the story come to life. The same is true with the dragons. They are described beautifully. My only complaint is the book is too short. It could be twice as long and I would still enjoy it. I am just now starting book three and so far so good on that book. I am so glad I decided to read this series. I really am enjoying it. I never thought I would say that about a fantasy novel. I am excited to read more fantasy novels.

The aliens were weird. I can’t say I have ever thought about aliens side by side with dragons. It threw me for a loop. But after a while it worked strangely enough. I was impressed that the author was thinking outside the box. If all his books are like this he has a fan for life in me.

I really am digging on this series. The first book was really good but this one blew that out of the water. I can’t get over how well the author writes. He obviously is immensely talented. How else would he come up with such great stories. It is not only a great story it was told well. Sometimes even if the story is good the writing is poor and makes the whole thing bad. That is not the case here. This book grabs you and makes you want more. Thankfully there are more books in the series. I think Jenka and Jade are two of the all-time great characters. I like dragons and Jade is one of the best.

This book and this series as a whole are very imaginative. I think I have a good imagination but I can’t write like this. He sure knows how to describe lands, characters and magic creatures. They really stand out and come to life. I think this is really aimed at the young adult market. But I did enjoy it. I will read the next book but prefer a more mature book.

But if you have kids this would be a good book for them. All kids like dragons and magic. This book has a lot of both of those things. In fact I am giving the set to my nephew for his birthday. I am sure he will love them. He is really into dragons.

I see some reviews are stating the book was too short. I think they are that way because they are targeted for young adults. They don’t have the same attention span as adults. I believe they are the perfect length for these young readers. I liked the story even though it was for younger readers. It was fun and enjoyable to read.

Another satisfying book from the Dragoneers series. If you think The First Dragoneer is an interesting introduction to the whole saga, wait till you read the succeeding installments. Cold Hearted Son of a Witch doesn't disappoint, even if it's not the most amazing book from the series, it still gives me the chills. The first impression did last this time. I like the mute character Lemmy and the old kickass characters from the first books. Mathias writing is simple but flows fluidly. He loves to set the mood and tickle your imagination. From the charismatic heroes, firmly focused action, and well executed mysteries, Cold Hearted Son of a Witch is a triumph of the fantasy genre. M.R. Mathias can play with your many emotions and you'll even thank him for that. Rereading is not my thing, but I did skim the pages of the previous books before reading a new book from the series.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I love books about magic and dragons and this book did not disappoint. I finished this book in one day, I absolutely could not put it down! This book had me neglecting my household duties as I couldn't wait to find out what happened next.

I was riveted from the very first sentence. Dragons Druids Magic awesome fight scenes this book has it all. I did feel a little lost at first as I didnt realize it was the second book in a series. I caught on very quickly and was drawn into such a vivid world. I felt I know the characters and was emotionally invested in what happened to them.

The writer definitely understands how to grab your imagination and take it on a wild ride. Buckle up! This book will not disappoint you in your quest to find a new and enchanting world.
