while the chapters on the individual artists are well-written and insightful, it is the preface and introduction to this text that make it essential reading for anyone interested in contemporary art, or racial politics in America in the 20th century.

complex, but well worth the effort, so far, very useful in teasing out the nuances of what is typically misconstrued as a monolithic practice.

Dense. Needlessly obscure writing style. Thesis occasionally seems apolitical. But good, smart, generally correct. An overcorrection for the excesses of pomo and identity politics.
