Back in the day, when I was a supervisor in a Federal agency, I attended a lot of management training sessions and read a LOT of self-help books for managers. THIS ONE IS OUTSTANDING. Plenty of that training and those books encouraged one to be understanding and encouraging as a supervisor. But none of them-- except "The Bad Attitude Survival Guide"-- really prepared me for times when decency would not be enough. When a few employee would be completely unresponsive to efforts to develop them positively. When they would even be-- I hate to admit it-- conniving and rude. When I was assigned to supervise Satan himself. This book gave me some insight into how they behaved and why. It gave me some methods for working effectively with them while maintaining some dignity in our interactions. I only wish that I had encountered this book when I was a new supervisor! Those happy training sessions I did attend had their uses, but this was what I really NEEDED. If you know anyone who has been newly promoted to management, give them this book!
