Learning languages is my thing and something I truly love doing, so anytime something like that can be incorporated into children's literature is aces with me! As a teacher, books like these are right up my alley!

I loved this book so much. I don't know where I bought it or if it was a gift but I found it in my classroom library a couple of weeks ago and I had to bring it home to keep safe. As soon as I love a book every child in my classroom loves it and wants to read it until it's destroyed. I'm being somewhat dramatic but it's true, little hands love something so much until it's gone. At least when it's made out of paper. Anyways, this book doesn't have a lot of meat on it. It's just saying "hello/greetings" in 42 languages from around the world. It's not a great story by any means. I would argue that it isn't a story at all. There is no beginning, middle, or end. There is not plot or characters. But it's still a great book!

I'm a world traveler and love visiting new places. Meeting new people and eating marvelous food. This one little book exposed my students to 42 languages and yes there was a lot of laughing and some kids thought it was funny but they also got to experience 42 different languages. It was fun to repeat the greeting to each other and for a couple of minutes we got to visit these countries, at least in their greetings.

Summary: Learn how to say hello in 42 different languages from around the world with this fun and colorful book. Each translation is accompanied by the phonetic spelling (to help with pronunciation) and an easily relatable illustration of a child from that area.

Genre: Multicultural. This books depicts and teaches the language of children from all over the world.

Reading Level: N

Mentor Text Trait:

Idea: The focus of this book is to connect people from different cultures by giving them the language to greet one another. I could see this book working really well as a way to kick off the school year in kindergarten or first grade. Students could use Hello World! As a mentor text for creating a class book in which students share how they like to greet people. Even within the English language, there are many different ways to greet a person.

Other Classroom Uses: This would be a great opportunity to talk about how people from different cultures can be different but still very similar. The Illustrations do a great job of depicting children from all backgrounds as being ordinary and relatable children.

This book showed readers how to say "hello" in 42 languages! This is a fascinating book that I would definitely put in my own classroom someday. Not only is it very informational, but it is also very inclusive. If there is a child in my classroom who doesn't speak English as their first language, it would be fun to let them look through the book and show their classmates which version of "hello" belongs to their native language. Letting all the students look through the book and show the class which language is theirs, is a fun activity that all the students can do together.

This book was okay because the story was really boring because it was telling about how other countries say Hello in different ways. I would recommend this to people who have been to different countries. It is different from the book called I lost my tooth in Africa because that one was only about Africa but this one is about 42 different languages saying hello in different places. How do you say hello in Hawaiian?

Other than a brief introduction, this is exactly what its title says it is --- the word(s) for "hello" or other greeting in 42 different languages each with a large, delightful, colorful illustration of a child from the area where the language is spoken. Enjoyed with a 4 year-old who tried to say each one after I read it out loud.

This book was super vibrant and colorful, the pronunciationa for all of the words were also very useful! I think this would be a good book for smaller children to have them learn about different languages. Possibly having certain students who are familiar with a language, read a certain page.

This was a great book for introducing new cultures around the world. There were 42 ways to say hello in languages all around the world. I will definitely use this information to incorporate into my morning meetings. Simply saying the American 'hello' will get tiresome and old after simply a week. With these 42 hello's in different languages, the students won't ever get bored with greeting each other and I can work a lesson on a different culture into my morning meeting or throughout the day as well!

This book contains illustrations and texts of children saying hello in 42 languages, including Norwegian and Swedish. While there isn’t a story line, I find that it adds a visual element to a conversation about the different languages that children speak or hear around them.

If looked at one on one with the child, it can be an entry point into a discussion about his own home language. Even better, reading it to the class and asking each child if they can identify their own “home hello” might encourage an entire classroom conversation around different languages.

This book has the full approval of the kindergartners in the international school I work in year after year. They can't wait till we get to their country, and they love learning how to say hello to their friends in other languages. They do also point out though, that some of the hellos used are more formal and they usually use a different word at home. But all in all, a great book with charming illustrations.

Mommy wishes that the book would tell us somewhere which countries each language is spoken in, because some are really random and we have no idea what they are. And the pronunciation guides don't always make it obvious how to say the phrases.

But we love the IDEA of the book, and the pictures are great.

This book is just what its title says, how to say "hello" in 42 different languages. I think this book would be cool to have in a really diverse class. It would also be great in less diverse classes, to help children get a broader perspective of the world. It would also be fun for the teacher to perhaps practice saying hello in a different language every week. It could be a class effort!

This book teaches kids how to say hello in 42 different languages. It would be ideal to use with little kids when first introducing different cultures, as it is set around the world in different countries. It also shows pictures of kids in their country, with accurate depictions of what they look like.

My kids really enjoyed this book. They liked learning different ways to say hello and that not all people speak English like they do. I found it interesting that some of the words were pronounced the same but spelled quite differently. I do wish that they would have mentioned some of the countries the languages are spoken in. I had to look up quite a few to answer the kids' questions.

I really liked that this book introduces so many ways to say hello. I also liked how it had the pronunciation of the words beneath the different languages. The only thing that I was surprised at was how it was missing some languages that I thought would have been important like Polish.

Jay read this with Henry on August 25th. The book informs how to say hello in many languages. It's amazing how many languages use the same phrase, even if spelled differently. Love the illustrations. Henry said he liked the English best because that is what we speak.

This was fun to use while teaching about the 400 (language) section of the library. Can you say, "hello" in Hiri Motu or Zulu?
