Jo Nesbø is a bestselling Norwegian author and musician. He was born in Oslo and grew up in Molde. Nesbø graduated from the Norwegian School of Economics with a degree in economics. Nesbø is primarily famous for his crime novels about Detective Harry Hole, but he is also the main vocals and songwriter for the Norwegian rock band Di Derre. In 2007 Nesbø also released his first children's book, Doktor Proktors Prompepulver.
First time I've read a full series of detective books. It started with the Snowman which was excellent and from then on I was hooked. I read the next books in order ending with the Phantom then went back to the beginning for the Oslo trilogy. I now have a sense of loss with fingers, toes and everything else crossed that there may, just may be another Hole book one day. They are all great books without exception.
The first time I read Nesbø, it was great. As I read the next book and the next, my pleasure in the books was mixed with a little bit of exasperation and then eventually with some boredom with Harry Hole. His issues get tiresome to the point that his continuing success despite his severe interpersonal problems and alcohol issues seems forced. It doesn't bode well when you like a story line despite the slog of your main protagonist and not "because of". So I have to downgrade these books as they get tiresome after a while as every new story has very cool things happening except for the sameness of Harry Hole.
Run to the bookstore or the library now and start reading these books! Nesbo's detective, Harry, is one of the most fascinating and warped individuals you're likely to meet: he's a human train-wreck but he always gets the job done (often at a significant cost). And each of the murders he investigates, as the series goes on, is more unsettling than the last; Nesbo's thought of some pretty creative ways to kill characters off and dispose of the bodies. These books fall into one of my favourite groupings of stories aka 'sick and twisted, but in a good way.' I don't want to give away the crucial bits, but you might be up all night once you start any of these books.
Found Redbreast and The Devils Star at the library Why is it so hard to find definitive lists of books in series (serious?) order? Have read both now find I should have read Nemisis second Ah well! Had to order Redeemer from the UK It will be a birthday present! Impressed by Jo Nesbo and Harry Hole
The Harry Hole series came highly recommended, but didn't really live up to the hype for me. I still enjoyed enough to keep reading, and they helped distract me from a rotten flu I caught over the holidays. They're oddly comforting in their formula and predictability.
Harry Hole is a high functioning addict hooked on alcohol, unrequited love and his job as an Oslo policeman.
His addictions often get the better of him, but he never loses forward momentum or his focus on his purpose and ultimate goal. Watching him is simultaneously heartwretching and thrilling.
For some reason I can only find The Redeemer on Goodreads in this collection. I haven't read these other Nesbo books but now that I've read The Redeemer I likely will. Nesbo is a great stylist, drawing up complex characters and interesting plot twists. Harry Hole is a conflicted hero with a deep sense of morality yet with a vulnerability that is quite appealing. Highly recommended.
Jo Nesbo's Harry Hole books remind me of the Dragon Tatoo genre. He's from Scandinavia as well. Those folks really know how to write an ice cold thriller! Then again I had to think twice about the name "Harry Hole."
I've read 4 books in this series. Pretty sure I didn't read them in the correct order since the time lines got a little confusing. They are entertaining murder mysteries. I may read more of Jo Nesbo's books in the future but feel I need a break before I do.
Just finished The Devils Star. This one was not as good as The Snowman, got a bit carried away with Harry's alcoholism, and had some major leaps of logic. The entire mystery never gelled for me.
if you liked "The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo" series, you'll love these. Headhunters is not a Harry Hole book but still good, though I imagine that one would make for a better movie than book.
brilliant books. Harry Hole is exceptionally written and each story is different from the last. I don't know how he comes up with the stories let alone intertwine them. absolutely recommends
The main character is without virtue. I read the first third of the book and discovered that I did not, and could not, care what happened to him or whether he was redeemed. So I quit reading.
