⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Once again, Mikayla has written another 5 star read for me. This book captured my attention from the start until the very end.
Kat has been in an abusive marriage for a year when she decides it's time to get out. When she tries, her husband puts her in the hospital. Her brother Alan, a military veteran, steps in to look out for her and asks his old military buddy Jackson, to let Kat stay with him for a safe haven until Kat's husband is found, to which Jackson agrees.
Over the course of seven months, Kat heals from her trauma both physically and emotionally. Jackson is also living with his own demons from his past that are still very much oresent in his future. Together, Kat and Jackson become friends and take comfort with one another, opening up and being vulnerable. Their feelings grow every day as they understand one another on a level that no one else can.
My goodness. This novel is such a beautifully written story of triumph over tragedy. I love that Kat is written in a way that feels so real. You feel her pain and confusion, her determination, her fear. She navigates her path, moving forward with strength and resilience. She has moments where she falters, but that only makes her character feel more real and raw. The path leading away from domestic violence is a complicated one, and I feel like that really came through in the book.
Jackson is a perfect cinnamon roll hero. He is a strong and silent man. He comes across with a tough exterior: tattooed, bearded, and very guarded. But I love that while he is a very strong and protective character, he is also incredibly sensitive and perceptive. He has this ability to see things without a word said. I love that he never pushes Kat more than she can handle. He supports her and builds her up. His demand for consent at all times is top-notch. We slowly learn about his past, and he handles it with a lot of grace.
I absolutely love that this was not an insta-love forced proximity situation. I really appreciate that it takes months for Kat and Jackson to warm up to one another and truly build and progress their relationship.
I also adore the friendship that Kat finds with Thea. Thea is the companion that Kat needs to push her out of her shell and remember how to have fun living life, and take pleasure in the little things like wearing a sexy dress, or enjoying a glass of wine with girl talk. Kat was robbed of these things over the course of her relationship with her husband, so I really like that a focus on finding herself this way as an individual was included.
The steamy scenes were on point. Jackson is very focused on consent and makes that clear with Kat. I love that she enjoys her smutty audio book and novels, and when she mentions that there's no way sex can be like that in reality, Jackson makes sure to prove her wrong. I love a man who puts his woman on a pedestal and worships her 🥵
The ending felt a bit predictable, but I don't even care. This book put my in my feels with a range of emotions, and the love story between Kat and Jackson was perfection 💜
Thank you, Mikayla Christy, for the opportunity to read an advanced copy and review for you!!
