I don't write many reviews, so I've got to really like something or really hate something before I take the trouble to sit down and write one. I'm glad to say I really liked this novel enough to make the effort. All the same, I'll keep it short and sweet.

Uth by Keith Hougthon is a long read but I didn't get bored once. I connected with the characters almost straight away and really rooted for them as the story pulled them hither and thither. Grask's frayed relationship with Rin is the comic relief in a storyline filled with fascinating places and dire situations. Overall, the novel is beautifully written, with truly breath-taking descriptions and clever conversations.

In many ways, it reminded me of some of the classic space adventures of yesteryear. So if you like Larry Niven, Ben Bova or Isaac Asmiov then you will find all the right elements in this novel.

Highly recommended. Great and easy read. Looking forward to more from this author.

Uth is an engaging easy read. The author's descriptions of the 'other worlds' are hypnotyic. His characterization is fabulous. The dialogue is sharp and witty, especially the banter between the protagonist (Grask) and his antagonist (Rin). The story is well worked out, with a pace and plot that draws you from one page to the next, which is the skill of a good writer. Uth is a big novel, covering grand panoramas and even grander ideas. But the author works hard to keep your attention focused. There are plenty of action sequences, separated by thought-provoking journeys. And the twist at the end was the icing on the cake for me. All in all I think anyone who wants a bit of sci-fi escapism in the traditions of Larry Niven and Iain M. Banks will appreciate Uth for the great read that it is.

I picked this one up after reading the writer's other book Killing Hope which I loved. Although completely different, this one is just as good. Uth is another rollercoaster plotline with clever characters trying to get themselves out of dire scrapes. Loved it! Another page turner that left me fulfilled when I got to the end but also a little sad that the journey was over. I can't wait for the next ride! Highly recommended!!

I realize that again I am out of step with the rest of the reviewers but, I found the characters not all believable, the plot was predictable.

The technologies that were described were not very well explained, it seemed all like magic, and the general premise of the book, I won't say what that premise is, to my way of thinking is flawed.

Urg. This is really not good. Badly written, clumsy dialogue, completely unrealistic and two dimensional characters. The one star is for such an imaginative concept, but really, he needs an editor, a proof reader and to pay attention to the human condition!
