ok this is was better than the first one i really liked the botanical garden scene but apart from that one chapter it was still kinda meh, i don’t really care what happens to haru honestly there’s not any reason to particularly like her? like as a reader we are not really given anything that makes us like her, the ones i care for because they’re given backstories are only given them right before they disappear so idk i think i’ll continue reading but it’s kinda meh
update i decided to just leave it at that i’m not gonna continue i just don’t care for any of the characters or what happens to them
This is my second review for the series “Akuma no Riddle '' by Yun Koga and illustrated by Sunao Minakata. With that we begin right as we left off a secret that was about to be unveiled to us readers. Class Black is actually 11 assassins competing to kill the 1 target amongst the 12 “students” attending, of course there were rules. The assassins are to give the target of notice of when they will be making an attempt at their lives within the next 48 hours. If the kill is not achieved within that amount of time the assassin will no longer be able to participate and win anything they desire. Suddenly Tokaku has taken it upon herself to protect the target who has been revealed to be Haru Ichinose thus beginning the games with 10 assassins, 1 guardian, and a single target. That is how the volume begins, tensions high now with the reward they all desperately desire has been made just a bit more difficult to achieve. The genre this volume would fit into is still as officially stated fiction action, and yuri. Hence this is the second volume of the series. The reason why you should read this volume is because within this book is the first notice. The first move that any of the assassin girls would make on Haru’s life. The suspense of said characters backstories or their methods of killing and to what their desires are for killing the target. This volume is going to portray 2 ways 2 of the girls are going to make an attempt on Haru’s life both wanting to achieve something different, both from different backgrounds, both with different reasonings. As you read you can only discover more and more about how different all of these girls truly are and how far they would try and go to receive the reward. It teaches about in my honest opinion that people are definitely not all what they seem, a facade built to gain trust or to put others at ease. Same feelings towards this volume as before. It's a really good book that’s introducing me to a whole variety of characters/killers and their morales. Although I wished they did more with the story of the 2nd girls life when she was taking Haru's life away from her. I’d recommend this book to people who enjoy Action and a bit of yuri. Overall this volume is great. It kicks off the story with the first attempts and gives us a better perspective for the girls in this twisted game.
This had more action than the volume one. So far the series looks like it will be all about each assassin and their attempt to kill one girl. I don't think I'll continue reading it, mostly because I was hoping for more.
I was hoping to get to know the characters a bit better, especially Tokaku, but the story seemed more plot driven than character driven in this volume.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
It's taken me awhile to get through this volume. I'm waiting for more of the story to pick up but so far I've been a bit bored, so it's hard to get through.
Akuma no Riddle is rated Teen and deals with assassins though I have not seen any actual successful murders so far. It appears that considering this is a girl only story with the exception of handlers and teachers it also involves feelings between girls so if potential same sex affections other you hen you might want to avoid this series.
I did not like or hate the series thus far which is probably due to introducing the story setting as well as many female assassins and one victim making for a whole lot to think about (I still have to double check each time I want to reference one of the characters.) but there is hope after finding out the rules of the assassination game for the black class.
First the assassin must give the victim notice and then take her out within 48 hours. The only people allowed to be involved in the attempt are the assassins and the victim but using anyone outside of the game will lead to automatic expulsion. If successful the assassin will be given one request of their wish and the game will be over but if they fail they are expelled from the class and are no longer allowed to participate so eventually the cast will begin to dwindle one way or another. It would be nice to have a summary sheet telling me who each person is and a small amount of info about them but as the group starts shrinking it will be easier to get more into the world of each girl
Also just in case you might wonder if the black class is just an isolated group focusing on the game of death I am glad to say it seems the class does get involved with school activities as they prepare to do a play for Romeo and Juliet at the school's anniversary Kinseiesai so the story will not all be about attempted murder (even though two girls have attempted and failed to assassinate the victim so we are down to 10 potential assassins as we find ourselves ready for volume 3. You might have noticed I have been rather generic in explaining who tried assassinating the victim or even the who the victim is (though I believe I mentioned it in the 1st volume review) but don't worry you'll know who is who once yu pick up the book and read it for yourself. So far it is better then volume one at least. :)
This book had more great moments with all the introductions are done but one of my favorite moments is getting to see the flirting between Hitsugi Kirigaya and Chitaru Namatame. It is pretty cute countering the often darker theme of the story. :)
In my opinion, the characters of Akuma no Riddle are its biggest strength. In this second volume, we learn more about the girls and their various motivations which I enjoyed. We especially learn a lot about them because everyone of them makes a wish that gets fulfilled when they’re able to kill Haru. Haru’s life stor is quite sad, and it’s interesting to see Tohaku struggle because . Takechi annoys me, I never like those stereotypical yandere characters.
I don’t have a lot to say about the plot, it’s just average. I find it a bit silly how something always happens to Haru when Tohaku is away. The school fest was also a bit cliché as well, and the Yuri elements honestly feel like they were written for men. Besides this, the art looked better her than in the previous volume. I still really like the different character designs.
2.5. I liked it better than the first. But it can't hold a candle to Kouga-sensei's own work. The writing is still choppy, but it flowed better this time around. The art is not as good as hers, sadly, but at least, Haru was growing on me.
