They Don't Speak Russian In Sitka: A New Look at the History of Southern Alaska

Rate this book
"This writing traces the history of the Southern Alaska region. Beginning with records which describe the Pacific routes of Spanish explorers, the author covers the early days of trade by native Alaskans with Americans, British and Russians. He then delineates the particular history of seven cities through the 1867 purchase of Alaska to the time the book was written. The book is replete with absorbing insights, developed through original research and the author's lengthy visits to Alaska. For those who like to picture what they're reading about, there's an excellent detailed pullout map in the back of the book.

Pretty good overview of post-colonization - 20th-century history, I wish it would have focused more on pre-Russian occupation history and the perspectives of the Tlingit populations, but for the time it does a good job.
