They Will Claim That I Was Dead...

Rate this book
After a serious car crash, Berlin loser Nico Pacinsky becomes increasingly delusional, believing that he is really Klaus Kinski. When he is contacted by a director pretending to be Werner Herzog, who wants to film the life of his best friend with Nico in the leading role, an inter-dimensional journey through German culture begins. Nico must find his way in a new world where he is pursued by demon hunters and Udo Kier is the first Rainbow.

"They Will Claim That I Was Dead ..." is a bitterly satirical novel. A critique of time and culture that takes no prisoners. An atomic all-out attack on all sensitivities with the megalomaniacal goal to set an infernal final point behind our contemporary culture.

The epilogue of this book contains one word. And it's that word that best describes how I felt after reading it. "Wow".

This novel is a glorious, no holds barred, mind twisting assault on your brain and I say that as a compliment. The biting satire throughout points its razor sharp wit at politics, religion, artists, hipsters, creatives, Hollywood and more. And it's funny but in the way something is funny because it's true and if you don't laugh at it you'd want to break down and cry.

The story itself is like a figment of the imagination, constantly changing your perception and making you wonder if parts of it are real or, perhaps all or none of it is. But, even after reading, I could only begin to tell you what it's about at a basic level because this is one of those books you don't so much read as you EXPERIENCE.

It's jam packed with so much absurdity, weirdness, and surrealism that you might wonder what the hell you're reading. Again, this is a compliment!

It's listed as a horror novel but, in my opinion, it's not. But don't let that stop you from giving this book a buy. It's definitely something you've never read before and I absolutely thought it was fantastic. I would highly recommend it.

Even if I managed to read another 500 novels in 2023, it is unlikely any would match the sheer bizarreness of Florian Frerichs' They Will Claim That I Was Dead, which is likely to be one of those books which is loved and reviled in equal measures. Upon completion, I was not entirely sure what I had just experienced, whether I had understood it or if the reader is supposed to be left totally perplexed by a seemingly insider joke. If you ever tackle this oddity, drop me a postcard and we can swap notes! There might even have been a subliminal message or two whispering between the many incomprehensible but beguiling paragraphs.

A unique take on the horror genre, I really enjoyed how bitter and satirical this book was. Florian Frerichs has a great writing style that I was hooked from the first chapter. It does a great job in showing German culture and the dangers. I'd read more from the author because I enjoyed this book a lot.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

DNF -I just couldn’t get into it. Satire just isn’t my thing I guess. I’ve always had a hard time with Bukowski and Vonnegut, and could never understand Catch-22.
But that’s just me. Nico was an interesting character but it was just so weird
