General Garrett Sinclair undertakes a rogue mission in the Sahara Desert to thwart an international nuclear threat in Total Empire , an explosive thriller from A. J. Tata.
When Sergeant Major Sylvester “Sly” Morgan is killed on a mission, his daughter, Zoey, tells General Garrett Sinclair that her father's death wasn’t random. Morgan had recorded a high-level meeting between Chinese, American, and French diplomats as they spoke about a plan for a new global government.
The “Chinese-U.S. Partnership”, or CUSP, intends to combine the world’s two largest economies and militaries to usher in a new era of partnership and leadership. But China’s offer has a deadline and penalties for noncompliance. As a safeguard, China has five high-tech hypersonic glide vehicles armed with nuclear weapons orbiting the earth ready to strike. When Zoey disappears in Africa, seemingly while in pursuit of her father’s killer, Sinclair and Dagger Team are caught off-guard as they scramble to catch up.
Without authorization or support from his government, Sinclair takes his team into the maw of the Saharan death pit, the Eye of Africa. In what will prove to be his most dangerous mission yet, Sinclair must overcome tremendous odds, with the threat of nuclear Armageddon hanging in the balance.

Total Empire is book #2 in the Garrett Sinclair series and my first novel by the author!
General Garrett Sinclair is on a rescue mission for a missing goddaughter Dr. Zoey Morgan in the Sahara desert. Meanwhile, China, France, and perhaps the US are in talks about a global government! This thriller takes place mostly in north/western Africa.
dammit, you have a country to defend!
Sorry! I get hyped up with these books. 😊The pace is fast in both storylines but the rescues have me on edge of my seat. The second story is a lot of bureaucrats but picks up the pace to a nail-biter conclusion. Although I didn't read the first novel, this has good characters that are well-developed and likable. Overall, an exciting multifacet military geopolitical thriller. I also heard good things about his Mahegan series and I'm excited to check that out. 3.5⭐
I switch between reading and listening. The audiobook is very good. Brian Troxell is excellent!
Thank you St. Martin's Press, Macmillan Audio, and Netgalley for my copies to review. OUT TODAY!
After spending a few days thinking about my review and how it might be perceived, I've decided it needed a redo. I try my best to not let an author's political leanings sway my opinion of the author's work but I failed on my first review. I want my reviews to be on the merits of the work and not whether my sensibilities are harmed. I made a point of saying I try to keep politics out of the equation and in my review I did the exact opposite.
Total Empire is General Tata's finest work to date and one hell of a thriller. Garrett Sinclair is what I think every soldier should aspire to be. He leads with honor and integrity and nothing matters more than the soldiers he commands. He's tenacious, intelligent and deadly. The supporting characters are well-developed and complement Sinclair. Total Empire is a fantastic thriller with equal amounts of violence and heart with a plot that is terrifyingly plausible.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of Total Empire.
Total Empire by A.J. Tata is the second adventure with Garrett Sinclair and his Dagger task force and it's mainly set in Africa but there are many countries involved. This is a well written thriller with some great new twists and I will certainly look forward to the next one due to the ending of this one. I do however miss Jake Mahegan even though he is there in parts but I found that series somewhat better. Still I would recommend this to most fans of good books. I also thank Edelweiss , St. Martin's Press and Macmillan for letting me read this advance copy.
This is a fast-paced military thriller. While high ranking officials in the presidential cabinet are acting as puppets for foreign governments, believing in the concept of unity, but ending up as victims under foreign control, General Garrett Sinclair and his team are trying to stop China from directing nuclear missiles onto the United States, in their fight for total domination. What are our agents willing to give up in their fight for freedom? Will it be their lives and the lives of people they love or maybe even the life of the President of the United States? Can they stop global war?
I haven't read any of this author's previous books, but I really enjoyed reading this action-packed novel and would definitely recommend it to fans of military fiction. My sincere thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for giving me the opportunity to read and review a digital ARC of this book.
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. General Sinclair new mission is to rescue a woman who is like a daughter to him. The mission will come with very little intel and not sure what he is getting into. I liked this book.
Audiobook Review: Total Empire (Garrett Sinclair #2) by Anthony J. Tata Narrated by Brian Troxell A Macmillan Audio Production for St. Martin's Press, March 21, 2023
★★★★★ (4.5 Stars) Rave!
Audiobook narration: A-Plus! COMMENDABLE SUPPORTING cast of international voice actors, even as narrator Brian Troxell delivers a top-shelf, cool-under-fire cadence in his portrayal of General Garrett Sinclair, an entertainment gem which brings to mind notable suspense thriller audiobook narrations.
Think George Guidall as "Gabriel Allon" (by Daniel Silva), Scott Brick as "Evan Smoak aka Orphan X" (by Gregg Hurwitz), Robert Bathurst as "Chief Inspector Armand Gamache" (by Louise Penny), or Stephen Shanahan as "Aaron Falk" (by Jane Harper).
And now Brian Troxell as "Garrett Sinclair" (by Brig. Gen. Anthony J. Tata) joins the fray.
FROM THE TABAS DESERT, IRAN....
Readers first meet the 3-Star General in 1980 as an Army Ranger team leader in "Operation Eagle Claw". ("Chasing the Lion" , Garrett Sinclair Book #1, 2021)
The doomed mission to rescue 55 American hostages in the Tabas Desert, Iran, over remote farmlands culminates in a conflagration as a Sea Stallion helicopter crashes into a Lockheed loaded with troops and jet fuel.
The fiery disaster kills a Tabas farmer, a collateral casualty who happens to be the father of one Dariush Parizad.
Parizad would later become a symbol of the revolution and named "The Lion of Tabas" by the Ayatollah himself, and in January 2020, (fictional) Iranian General Dariush Parizad becomes the commander of the IRGC Quds Force following the assassination of Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani....
....TO THE EYE OF AFRICA, AND THE ATLANTIS OF PLATO'S DIALOGUES.
// TOTAL EMPIRE (Garrett Sinclair #2) by Anthony J. Tata (2023) //
General Garrett Sinclair is still reeling from a near-death experience in thwarting Iranian General Dariush "The Lion of Tabas" Parizad's plan to annihilate hundreds of thousands of citizens during a historic day in the United States - the day of the inauguration of its first woman president ("Chasing the Lion" Book #1), when Sinclair and his team find themselves going rogue once again as the one and only final stand against the devious "TOTAL EMPIRE" world domination scheme by America's greatest modern economic and military rival.
The People's Republic of China, wielding an arsenal of space-based hypersonic nuclear missiles, is aided and abetted by the greatest threat to America.
Its enemies from within.
Powerful and corrupt cabinet-level U.S. government officials. Globalists seeking a new world order. The usual suspects in the American mainstream media. And a deranged, sword-wielding French descendant of guillotine executioners cum treasure hunter in pursuit of "Plato's gold". (See below.)
The lead-by-example /boots-on-ground general and his JSOC (Joint Special Operations Command) Dagger strike team complemented with a combat helicopter and crew fend for themselves, cut off from U.S. government and military resources by treacherous design, as they relocate to the "Eye of Africa" in Western Sahara, wherein strategically hidden lies a well-disguised Chinese missile guidance base for five orbital nuclear hypersonic glide vehicles.
The "Eye of Africa", Mauritania, also known as the "Eye of the Sahara", a/k/a the "Richat Structure", further considered by historians and scientists as the site of Poseidon's Atlantis given detailed description in "Plato's Dialogues", circa 360 B.C.
In legend, a city of gold.
Where quite possibly Garrett Sinclair and his closest friends and allies will pay the ultimate price...

Well-written, breathtakingly creative, non-stop action in one of the most mysterious and intriguing places in the world. A must-read!
Review based on an advance listening copy courtesy of Macmillan Audio, St. Martin's Press, and NetGalley.
This is a captivating story about a high-risk mission to rescue an American hostage that takes a turn for the worse. General Sinclair, Zoey Morgan's godfather, informs her that his best friend, Sargent Major Sly Morgan, was killed while attempting to rescue the hostage. Zoey becomes suspicious and believes that Sly's death was not a random act of violence. She discovers that he had recordings and notes from a meeting in Morocco where Chinese, French, and American representatives discussed a plan to establish a global government with a shared military and economy. Intrigued by her father's findings, Zoey travels to Africa, determined to investigate what he found and to find his murderer. General Sinclair follows her closely because he's worried about her safety. He shares Sly's information with President Campbell, a personal friend of Sinclair and his late wife. Sinclair's mission is unofficial, and he's under investigation for his involvement in a previous mission, making it impossible for him to have backup support.
Zoey's journey to Africa takes a dangerous turn when she is captured by Henri Sanson, her father's executioner, who is leading an archeological dig in the Sahara. The dig distracts attention from the Chinese activity in the area. The Chinese have launched hypersonic vehicles armed with nuclear weapons to orbit Earth. The targeting system for these weapons is being developed in the Sahara, and Sinclair's group must stop the threat.
This is an action-packed story about six people battling against Chinese forces in the sweltering desert. Sinclair considers each member of his group as family, and their bond is tested as they face insurmountable odds. Although his late wife always believed that good triumphs over evil, there are losses that deeply affect the group. A.J. Tata takes you to the brink of nuclear war as China gains power and uses its weapons to coerce America. It's a daunting scenario that will keep you on the edge of your seat, with each page turning up the tension and suspense.
Overall, this story is a thrilling and thought-provoking read that is sure to keep you captivated from the first page to the last. The characters are well-developed, and the plot is intricate and well-crafted. The writing is descriptive, and the action scenes are masterfully written. If you're a fan of action and suspense, this book is an absolute must-read.
General Garrett Sinclair is determined to find his deceased friends daughter, Zoey, when she disappears in Africa. The US and China have entered into a partnership, but China has issued penalties and deadlines for non-compliance. As part of this, China has fiver high-tech hypersonic glide vehicles armed and ready with nuclear weapons orbiting the Earth. When Sinclair takes off after Zoey, he doesn’t have authorization and puts everything on the line. As he continues to dig he can’t help but wonder if Zoey’s disappearance is somehow tied to the Chinese partnership. Will he find Zoey before it’s too late? Is his career over since he went off book?
This was a fantastic book to listen to on audio! It was so action packed that I felt right there in the middle of everything. The narrator did a fantastic job of annunciation and enthusiasm for the words. The narrator kept the pacing in line with how I envisioned the book being written.
This book was great. I enjoyed the fast pacing and character development. This book was non-stop from the start to the finish. I did feel the ending was a little rushed, but overall, this was a great read and I highly recommend it to those looking for an action-adventure thriller.
Thank you to the publisher MacMillian Audio, @Macmillianaudio, St Martin’s Press, @stmartinspress, and Netgalley @netgalley for this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I became a fan of the general's writing because you could read that he wrote from experience, but this book reads more like nonfiction than any textbook I've ever seen. I've read the reviews where people on the opposite political spectrum have been trashing the novel which only emphasizes the point the general is making, and saddens me knowing how much our nation's warriors are ignored and completely unappreciated by those very citizens they sacrifice for. I admit to spending a fair bit of time shedding tears while reading this book. I believe anyone who shares the general's opinion on the way our politicians have abused our nation's warriors are incensed by how our best and bravest are being treated in a world that needs them more now than ever before. I'm so proud to stand with these brave men and women against those who put ambition and greed before service. I love the message being delivered by the general; both Sinclair and Tata, and pledge my undying support for both them and our nation's best that they lead. I look forward to enjoying many more adventures with Dagger and hopefully finding a way to honor our warriors in the way they deserve since their sacrifice is what allows us that freedom. I'm honored to stand with those brave men and women, and if that "triggers" some people, that's too damn bad.
An amazing addition to the General Garrett Sinclair series. After a hostage rescue mission in the Sahara Desert results in several casualties on his team, including his best friend Sly, Sinclair ends up on a rogue mission seeking vengeance as well as unraveling what could prove to be a major coup be the President’s Cabinet.
I really enjoy that the books are written from a first person perspective. They read like an after action report. Tata has compelling characters, some of which commingle between the various series he writes. He also has brilliant action scenes, and storylines that are well paced. I also appreciate that while he is obviously writing about subjects he is well versed in, he doesn’t bog down the reader with technical details like weapons and ammo sizes.
I’m a huge fan of Tony Tata and his work. This novel is fully indicative of an author at the top his craft. The plot is complex without resorting to gimmicks. The characters face daunting obstacles in completing their mission. I can’t say more without giving away elements of the plot. I’ve been privileged to meet General Tata on a few occasions. Quality person from a high quality family. This novel is the second in the series and will make more sense if read in the proper sequence. In the military signal book, Bravo Zulu means “well done”. In this case, and as is the norm…very well done! If I could award six stars, I certainly would!
General Garrett Sinclair is on a mission. His motivation is to find missing American citizen Zoey Morgan, avenge the death of Zoey's father, Command Sergeant Major Sly Morgan, and see if he was right what he believed he had discovered. During this quest, he discovers a terrorist threat that will ultimately end in World War III and the destruction of humanity as we know it. Put your seat belt on as A.J. Tata takes you on another thrill ride with "Total Empire".
I enjoyed this book very much. Tata knows the military landscape, and his combat scenes are taut and realistic. The action is pretty much non-stop throughout Total Empire, and the characters are well drawn and realistic. The strength of the book is the plot, and Tata paints a complex story with many layers. It is high-tech, but believable. The threat of supersonic nuclear weapons orbiting earth is frightening, and Tata's uses of bluff and deception in this story are masterful. This is a really well thought out plot, and Tata's artful use of point of view changes moves the story along quite well.
One weakness was the villainous character Sanson, who seemed to be a little cartoonish, and not in sync with the seriousness of the plot. A second weakness was the repeated descriptions of how wonderful the members of his team were and how much the protagonist Sinclair admired and cared for them. I can't fault Tata too much for this as I believe it comes from his own experience. I don't know much about his background, but I would guess he actually led men and women into combat, and is putting his own experience into his writing. The care he exhibited for those he led shows through.
If you are looking for a military thriller with a complex but believable plot surrounded by lots of action, this book is for you. I will be seeking out more of Tata's work in the future.
My thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for providing a review copy. My submission of this review was voluntary.
I received an advanced copy of the book from NetGalley in return for a review.
Another nail biting thriller from A J Tata! Garrett and his team are tasked with stopping China from starting a nuclear war. Political maneuvering forces the President to send the team covertly within support. They save the day, but at a terrible cost. Of course the book ends on a cliffhanger….. Can’t wait fir the next installment
A highly enjoyable political thriller that left me wanting to pick up the next book now! Garrett Sinclair is ready for retirement, but the President is still in need of his service. Sinclair takes his team on a journey that can only be described as challenging and eye popping. Sinclair must make difficult choices that puts his very family at risk. The ending …. Well, the ending left me screaming at the book. Thanks to NetGalley for the early read.
A J Tata is very well acquainted with the military so is able to write very convincing stories. General Sinclair has a new mission to rescue a woman who is like a daughter to him after her father was killed on a mission with General Sinclair. The mission will come with very little intel but the General and his team are able to accomplish their mission, though not without casualties. It started a bit slow as he was building the story but once they were on the mission it moved quickly. Thank you to Netgalley and St Martin's Press for allowing me to read the ARC of this book. .
Set in today’s world this book follows a special forces unit as they attempt to stop a threat to the very fabric of American life. It’s filled with action yet brings up topics that are part of an on-going conversation about war and it’s effects on the soldiers and their families.. Values, relationships, politics, nationalism all are sub-themes woven within the story line. The political concerns, especially, could have been taken from recent headlines. #TotalEmpire #netgalley
The death of Sergeant Major Sylvester Morgan on a mission weighs heavily on General Garrett Sinclair. When Sly’s daughter, Doctor Zoey Morgan, tells Garrett her father had recorded a clandestine meeting of diplomats from China, America, and France during which they discussed a plan for the Chinese-U.S. Partnership, a global government, it seems clear that he was murdered to keep him from revealing what he had discovered.
And then Zoey vanishes.
Realizing that Zoey has gone to Africa, Garrett and the team head for Dakhla, Morocco with a plan to rescue her. But the plan hatched by the Chinese is nearly complete . . . and a deadline for noncompliance triggers a nuclear attack somewhere in the United States.
Can Garrett and his Joint Special Operations Command team successfully keep the Chinese from using their laser system to launch more nuclear weapons toward the United States? And will they discover how the president of the United States is involved?
=========
Garrett Sinclair returns in another action-packed thriller. Well-drawn characters, a strong sense of place, and a chilling plot all work together to draw the reader into the telling of the tale from the outset. With hardly any time for the reader to take a breath, the narrative races along with Garrett and his team as they try to stop those inside the government who blatantly conspired against the president of the United States.
Unexpected plot twists bring surprises as the complex tale of political machinations and courageous military action keeps those pages turning. Readers are sure to root for Garrett and his team as the unfolding narrative, both compelling and terrifying, spins out its story of treachery and patriotism.
Highly recommended.
I received a free copy of this eBook from St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley #TotalEmpire #NetGalley
This took me a long time to read, mainly because it was non-stop action and I had to slow myself down often to really understand and appreciate what was going on. Each chapter dealt with different viewpoints about the various activities that were occurring. Needless to say, it was remarkably well written and had a plot that wouldn’t quit. Great reading. Thanks to Net Galley and St. Martin’s Press for an ARC for an honest review.
Review copy (eARC) provided via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
When I requested the book on NetGalley, I was not aware of the author's background. But, based on what I gather from Amazon, the author is a dedicated member of our armed forces (and thank you for your service).
I have not read the first book in this series (and it appears that this series may connect with at least one other series by the same author). It's a hyper-realistic political/military thriller, with non-stop action of all kinds. At the time of this review, the Goodreads page does not have a plot summary, so I would refer you to the Amazon page for a good, spoiler-free synopsis.
The main reason why this book was four, not five stars, to me was that I felt like the book didn't allow the reader to breathe and digest the plot, as the novel goes from moment to moment to moment.
That said, I quite enjoyed the book (especially not having read the first, which I felt was not a material problem here).
Total Empire finds General Garrett Sinclair up to his neck in trouble once again. When his mission goes sideways, Garrett loses one of his best men and his best friend while the government is trying to rewrite the events of his last mission and put him out to dry. Sky’s daughter tells Garrett that her dad was murdered for the plot he has uncovered and they Zoey goes missing. Determined to find Zoey, Garret and his soldiers go all in on a mission full of treason and great losses for Garrett. Action packed and clever, the story unfolds with a realistic plot twist that will have you gasping, grieving, and rooting for Garrett and his team until the very end. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from NetGalley.
I won this ARC is a Goodreads Giveaway. This is the first thing I've read by the Author.
The start was very tedious and read more like a report with the occasional feeling injected because someone remember they were telling a story in stead of writing a report. That part was about two things that had already happened, which honestly I'm not sure if they were even important to mention in this book. Once the main story got going it was far more engaging. The characters are likable and the pacing rapidly picks up speed. There were bits and pieces where I felt I missed something but for the most part this was a fun read.
An absolutely thrilling read. For people who like action and numerous twists, this is your book. I highly recommend you read this book ASAP. I am a retired Wake Co. teacher who met Tata and found him very interesting as we discussed sports and coaching. He at that time was Superintendent of Schools.
Anyone in the mood for a fast-paced story with good guys and bad guys should grab a copy of this book and the one that precedes it. General Sinclair is a great character. I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley the publisher and voluntarily provided an honest review.
A mission to rescue an American hostage goes terribly wrong and General Garrett Sinclair loses his best friend, Sargent Major Sly Morgan. A.J. Tata’s political thriller is non-stop action. It is six individuals against Chinese forces in the sweltering desert heat. Sinclair considers each member of his group as family. His late wife always told him that good wins, but on this mission there are losses that shake the group to the core. Tata takes you to the brink of nuclear war as China gains strength and uses its’ weapons to blackmail America. It is a terrifying scenario that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I would like to thank NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for providing this book for my review.

Total Empire A Garrett Sinclair Novel Garrett Sinclair #2 Anthony J. Tata When I requested this audio book for review I did not realize it was the second book in the series; this tale stands well alone but I would like to go back and read the book one. General Garrett Sinclair is ordered to place Sergeant Major Sylvester (Sly) Morgan in charge on the ground. While most General’s would stay in their office and coordinate things from there, Garrett was in the helicopter while the mission was in progress. He was listening in when things went bad and his best friend Sly was killed. Sly had recorded a covert meeting between the Chinese, French and Americans as they plotted against the US and made plans for a one world government. Sly gave the flash drive to his daughter Doctor Zoey Morgan who passed it on to her Godfather, Garrett. It is obvious Sly was murdered to keep him from divulging what he had discovered. The Chinese-US Partnership aka CUSP was plotting to combine the economic resources and militaries of China and the US. China convinces certain members of the US administration that the plan will benefit both governments. China has several missiles nuclear warheads orbiting earth ready to attack if the President does not sign on the their plan. Zoey is determined to find her father’s murderer and heads to Africa, where she disappears. Sinclair and his team follow her to Africa without authorization. China hits VA with one of their nuclear missiles. Thousands are dead. Sinclair must rescue Zoey, stop the Chinese, and rescue the leader of the US government. WOW! This is a non-stop action thriller. The characters are well fleshed out. The scenes were realistic. But the cliffhanger left me wanting more. Now I have to wait until author Anthony J. Tata publishes the next installment.
Well this is a sequel that didn’t suffer from Second Book Syndrome! I was riveted to my seat!
The world was so believable & shockingly well defined. I could have been there with him. Garrett Sinclair is a bit of an old school General. He fights with & for his fellow soldiers & in this story he goes rogue to save his God Daughter & possibly the world.
You feel his pain when he loses someone, fear for his friends and cheer him on when he’s taking care of business!
China & France want a new world order and Garrett Sinclair is in the thick of it.
The author knows military acronyms and subtly shares their meaning with the reader. This was an action packed roller coaster ride. If you liked book one you’ll love book two!
Thank you NetGalley & Macmillan Audio! I look forward to book 3!!
Action pack military thriller that leaves you hooked!
At first I had reservations about reading a military thriller but the author is awesome about explaining everything. The characters come the life as you live the mission with General Sinclair and his team from the first page to the last. Very action packed with twists and turns on every page. I am definitely hooked! Bravo Zulu!!!
