Love poems with a twist. When I Fall is a book of words and poems that embraces romance and darkness befitting a gothic novel. With edgy thoughts on love, lust, power, and heartbreak strewn into short, bittersweet poems, readers are given permission to feel emotions raw and dark.
Sabina Laura is a writer, poet, and illustrator from the UK. She fell in love with writing and language at a young age and went on to study English Language and Linguistics at university. She is the author of four poetry collections: Moonflower, All This Wild Hope, Shades of Sorrow, and When I Fall. She has also written A little sunshine and a little rain, a poetry journal, and Silver Linings, a collection of affirmations and reminders.
When I Fall is a wonderful collection of poems that take you on a journey through all the beautiful and vulnerable feelings that come from falling in love. The poems within are raw, emotional and thought-provoking. I found I could relate to most of them. The illustrations are lovely too.
A beautiful collection of poetry that brings you through a journey of emotions. This one’s for the empaths 🥹 If you feel big feelings, this book is for you. It’s about falling in love, being heartbroken, finding self love, learning to let go, and healing your heart. The illustrations are gorgeous. I really love this!
Great poems divided into sections: Falling, Spiraling, Crashing, Flying, and Landing. I really enjoyed how relatable the poems are. Many of them could easily be used for a greeting card.
This is such a beautiful collection of poetry. It's about falling in love, having your heart broken, finding self-love and healing, and then finding true love. It's divided into five sections (Falling, Spiraling, Crashing, Flying, and Landing), allowing it to flow perfectly through the different feelings. The poems are raw and vulnerable and full of emotion. I love the imagery throughout, both in the words and illustrations.
While I loved every poem, my favourites were:
Between Fear and Falling Nightfall In Another Lifetime Miracle When You Need To With Her Light

🎵 Q: Do you read poetry or take the time to read song lyrics from music artists you enjoy?
I think I might be in my Poetry Girl Era. (And no, it’s not because of one T. Swift, but because my friend Kassie introduced me to her work and fully yanked me back in).
I have always enjoyed poetry and reading song lyrics… I just kind of forgot how much so until a local poet reintroduced me to it. And now, it seems, my love for it has returned and is here to stay.
🪶 What’s it about? Broken into five sections–Falling, Spiraling, Crashing, Flying, and Landing–When I Fall is an ode to love in all its beautiful and crumbling moments. It’s about vulnerability and learning to trust again. About loving people in all their glory and brokenness. And all of those emotions are intertwined with images of nature–both in written and illustrated form. (I think T.Swift would totally approve of this emotional beauty).
I’m not much of a book tabber, but I tabbed the heck out of this. There are so many beautiful, concisely conveyed emotions that I couldn’t help it.
🪶 My favorites are: “A Letter to My Younger Self” “What it Cost Me” “If Only”
I sometimes find poetry hard, what am I supposed to be getting out of it. What message am I missing? This collection is not like that at all...
It is so incredibly relatable. Its about falling in love, heartbreak, the aftermath and coming out on the other side. Its emotional and honest and obviously based on experience. If you have ever experienced heartbreak, there is something in this collection that will resonate with you. I read through it quickly, then went back in sections, rereading my favourites. It is a reminder that you are not alone. I loved everything about it. It will be a collection that I easily recommend to others.
Huge thank you to St. Martins Press and Castle Point Books for the gifted copy!!
When I Fall is a beautiful collection of poetry that takes readers on an emotional journey. This exquisite collection is ideal for those who are sensitive to the feelings of others, making it a must-read for empaths.
This is such a beautiful book. I could feel the hope, pain and hurt so deeply in the words of these poems. These take you through a complete fall and rise again of a bad breakup and if you have ever been there, you are going to be able to feel in your soul every minute, but it's so worth it.
I absolutely adored this book of poetry!!! I had to stop myself from yelling "yes" and snapping my fingers in praise while reading this. Although it is about the ups and downs of love, the poems can be connected to many of life's different experiences. I connected to strongly to the writing. I borrowed this on Libby, but will be buying my own physical copy because I plan to reread it many times.
I read this in one sitting because I was in my feels. I definitely teared up one or two times and also felt it tugging at my heart strings. Not all of the poems are good, but there are some in there that are very good.
Beautifully written and very relatable. I am not a regular annotator but I felt compelled to tab this book because of how much some of the lines, and poems as a whole, resonated with me. I love the emotional journey we go on with the author and think it is summed up quite nicely on the back. "When I Fall is a book about love when it's falling, Crash landing, and learning to soar again."
