The author recounts how he became interested in aviation, describes his work with the U.S. Navy Bureau of Aeronautics and NASA, and discusses aeronautical technology
I think you have to be pretty passionate about aviation to get through Fred Weick’s autobiography. I found it fascinating though, especially as I’ve done a lot of flying in the Ercoupe which he designed in the late 1930s. I found it hard to understand the beginning parts when he was into propeller design but had no idea that he was so instrumental in so many designs: Piper’s Pawnee, the Cherokee (which I used to own for 10 years), and some that didn’t make it into production. A brilliant man, Fred was the consummate aviator and engineer.
The story of Fred Weick, the designer of the Ercoupe, a delightfully distinctive private airplane whose devotees cherish and hold fly-ins to show off and talk about.
