About the author

Sunil Gangopadhyay (Bengali: সুনীল গঙ্গোপাধ্যায়) was a famous Indian poet and novelist. Born in Faridpur, Bangladesh, Gangopadhyay obtained his Master's degree in Bengali from the University of Calcutta, In 1953 he started a Bengali poetry magazine Krittibas. Later he wrote for many different publications.

Ganguly created the Bengali fictional character Kakababu and wrote a series of novels on this character which became significant in Indian children's literature. He received Sahitya Academy award in 1985 for his novel Those Days (সেই সময়). Gangopadhyay used the pen names Nil Lohit, Sanatan Pathak, and Nil Upadhyay.

Works:
Author of well over 200 books, Sunil was a prolific writer who has excelled in different genres but declares poetry to be his "first love". His Nikhilesh and Neera series of poems (some of which have been translated as For You, Neera and Murmur in the Woods) have been extremely popular.

As in poetry, Sunil was known for his unique style in prose. His first novel was Atmaprakash (আত্মপ্রকাশ) and it was also the first writing from a new comer in literature published in the prestigious magazine- Desh (1965).The novel had inspiration from ' On the road' by Jack Kerouac. His historical fiction Sei Somoy (translated into English by Aruna Chakravorty as Those Days) received the Indian Sahitya Academy award in 1985. Shei Somoy continues to be a best seller more than two decade after its first publication. The same is true for Prothom Alo (প্রথম আলো, also translated recently by Aruna Chakravorty as First Light), another best selling historical fiction and Purbo-Paschim (পূর্ব-পশ্চিম, translated as East-West) a raw depiction of the partition and its aftermath seen through the eyes of three generations of Bengalis in West Bengal, Bangladesh and elsewhere. He is also the winner of the Bankim Puraskar (1982), and the Ananda Puraskar (twice, in 1972 and 1989).

Sunil wrote in many other genres including travelogues, children's fiction, short stories, features, and essays. Though he wrote all types of children's fiction, one character created by him that stands out above the rest, was Kakababu, the crippled adventurer, accompanied by his Teenager nephew Santu, and his friend Jojo. Since 1974, Sunil Gangopadhyay wrote over 35 novels of this wildly popular series.

Death:
Sunil Gangopadhyay died at 2:05 AM on 23 October 2012 at his South Kolkata residence, following a heart attack. He was suffering from prostate cancer for some time and went to Mumbai for treatment. Gangopadhyay's body was cremated on 25 October at Keoratola crematorium, Kolkata.

He was honored with Ananda Award (1972, 1979) and Sahitya Academy Award (1984).

কাকাবাবু আর সন্তু। সমগ্র শুরু করার পূর্বে আমি মোটে দুটো বই পড়েছিলাম কাকাবাবুকে নিয়ে। তখন থেকেই সুতীব্র এক ইচ্ছে কাজ করত সমগ্র পড়ার! আর সমগ্র ১ শুরু করবার পর থেকে একরকম অদৃশ্য এক সঙ্গী হয়ে গিয়েছিলাম কাকাবাবু আর সন্তুর সাথে..

শারীরিকভাবে অক্ষম হওয়া সত্ত্বেও ইচ্ছেশক্তির জোরে একজন মানুষ কি করতে পারে তার জ্বলন্ত উদাহরণ কাকাবাবু। দূর্ঘটনায় নিজের একটি পা হারিয়েও তিনি ছুটে যান নানান জায়গায়। সাধারণ নয়, সমাধান করেন জটিল সব রহস্যের। আর তাঁর সাথে থাকেন ভাইপো সন্তু।

কাকাবাবু সিরিজের এডভেঞ্চারের অভিজ্ঞতা একদম আলাদা। বিভিন্ন রহস্যময় জায়গায় ঘুরে বেড়ানো সহ নানান বিপদে জড়িয়ে পরে শান্তভাবে মাথা ঠান্ডা করে সমাধান যে কোন পাঠককেই শিহরিত করবে।

পরবর্তী সমগ্রগুলো পড়ার এক অদম্য ইচ্ছে হচ্ছে। আপাতত তা দমিয়ে রাখা যাক!

সুনীল গঙ্গোপাধ্যায় প্রায় সব ধরণের বই ই লিখেছেন। তবে যেহেতু এটা গোয়েন্দা না, তাই ফেলুদা, বোমকেশ এগুলোর সাথে মিলানো যাবে না। অ্যাডভেঞ্চার বই হিসেবে ভাল বলতে হবে। মোট কাকাবাবু সমগ্র ৬ পর্যন্ত সংগ্রহে আছে। সবগুলোই পড়েছি। প্রায় আড়াই বছর আগে ১ম খন্ডটি পড়েছি। [good book]

The Best Kakababu series undoubtedly !

This is the first part of the Kakababu series. I read it almost 15 years back when I was in school. Can't remember the contents of the book, but I remember that I really loved the characters Kakababu, shontu and especially Jojo.

Among the three of them Jojo was my favorite, he added the extra, one can say "x- factor". I always looked forward to our library classes, to borrow the next Kakababu series after I had finished one.

কয়েকটা গল্প ভালো লাগলেও বেশিরভাগ গল্পই তেমন ভালো লাগেনি। প্রথম প্রথম খুব ইন্টারেস্টিং মনে হলেও ক্লাইম্যাক্স তেমন করে জমেনি গল্পগুলোর। কাকাবাবু সিরিজের বেশিরভাগ গল্পই এমন। ফিনিশিংয়ে এসে হতাশ হতে হয়। তারপরেও লেখনী ও প্লটে অভিনবত্ব থাকায় থ্রি স্টার দিলাম।

This book brings together the first five adventures of Santu and his fascinating uncle, Raja Roy Chowdhury, better known as Kakababu. My first encounter with the Kakababu series happened when I was around 11 or 12 years old. At that time, I was also engrossed in reading the "Tin Goyenda" series and imagined myself as a budding detective, which made Santu’s experiences deeply relatable and thrilling for me.

The initial story, "Bhoyonkor Sundor", opens in Pahalgam, Kashmir. Instead of the usual tourist hotspots, we’re taken off the beaten path with Santu and Kakababu as they explore rocks and hidden nooks in the hills around Sonamarg. Sunil Gangopadhyay, the author, carefully introduces us to Kakababu’s unique personality and quirks. Kakababu, who once served as the director at the Geological Survey of India, is now retired, but his intense curiosity and resilience remain undiminished. Although he lost a leg in an accident and walks with a crutch, his spirit is unbreakable. Kakababu constantly imparts valuable lessons to Santu, reminding him that most of life’s challenges can be overcome through mental strength and determination.

This message is particularly powerful in a young adult novel. Sunil never overlooks Kakababu's physical struggles; in fact, he emphasizes them, showing the strain and pain Kakababu feels climbing stairs, navigating hills, or moving without his crutch. However, physical pain never dampens Kakababu’s courage in difficult situations. His quick mind and sharp analytical skills enable him to escape every peril with surprising finesse. Kakababu is no ordinary detective; he doesn’t take up investigations for fame or fortune but follows them purely to satisfy his own curiosity. His extensive knowledge in fields like history and archaeology adds a unique depth to his character, making him a more complex and compelling figure.

Sunil also gives Kakababu a strong sense of humanity. He cares deeply for others, including animals, and has an unshakable empathy that extends even to criminals, whom he views as people who may have lost their way due to lack of guidance or opportunity. Above all, his love for Santu stands out. Kakababu is willing to face any risk for his nephew, demonstrating a protective yet empowering affection that is both touching and inspiring.

Unlike other detective stories where teenagers and children are often left to fend for themselves, Santu’s adventures are shared with an adult, his Kakababu. This made the stories feel more believable to me at that age. Kakababu may be a guardian, but he’s far from the typical one. He offers Santu plenty of freedom, trusts him to make decisions, and teaches him important lessons about safety and self-defense, creating a unique balance of guidance and independence.

Through the stories in this collection, we witness the evolving dynamic between Santu and Kakababu, as they travel from the mountains of Kashmir to the Andaman Islands, journey across the Himalayas, venture into the Sundarbans, and even confront old enemies. With each adventure, they grow more confident in themselves and in each other. Santu matures into a steadfast companion for Kakababu, becoming his indispensable partner.

On a recent wander through Kolkata, I came across an old office building belonging to the Geological Survey of India. I couldn't resist taking a photo—after all, Kakababu, although fictional, was the director of this very office in my imagination! I’m already looking forward to revisiting these adventures and planning to reread the book in another few years.

কাকাবাবুর সিরিজটা ভালো। সকলে তাই বলে। এটা শেষ করে ও সেই অনূভুতিই হলো।

তবে কেউ যদি বাংলাদেশে অর্ঘ্য প্রকাশের ফেব্রুয়ারী-২০২০ এ প্রকাশিত ১ম সংস্করণের বইটি কিনতে চান তাহলে দয়া করে কিনবেন না। বানানের মান ভয়াবহ খারাপ। ওরা কি করে বই ছাপায় ওরাই জানে।

রহস্য গল্প। তবে আমার সবচেয়ে ভালো লেগেছে গল্পের ভ্রমণের দিকটা। রহস্য বেশিরভাগই predictable মনে হয়েছে । কিন্তু পড়তে ভালো লেগেছে তবুও। তাদের দুনিয়ায় হারিয়ে ফেলেছিলাম কিছুক্ষণের জন্য নিজেকে। নিঃসন্দেহে বলা যায় author খুব ভালো লেখেন (very engaging or should I say a page-turner) যদিও তার লেখা প্রথম বই পড়লাম এটা।
কাকাবাবু সাহসী এবং চাপা স্বভাবের কিন্তু কেন যেন তাকে আমি আমার পড়া অন্যান্য দুর্দান্ত গোয়েন্দাদের মতো (যেমন: তিন গোয়েন্দা, মাসুদ রানা, Sherlock Holmes, মুসা গালিব, ইত্যাদি) ভালোবেসে ফেলতে পারলাম না। There was just something about him that didn’t click with me I guess. Don’t get me wrong. I don't hate him or anything. I truly respect him. I mean how can I not? He had achieved so much with one broken leg that two perfectly legged human beings often failed to do. Liked the fact he was connected to pretty important people and was valued by them. My favorite character is definitely সন্তু.
I can't wait to read the other books.

প্রাক্তন কেন্দ্রীয় সরকারী চাকুরে কাকাবাবুর একটি পা ভাঙ্গা,ক্র্যাচে ভর দিয়ে হাঁটেন,কিন্ত অসাধারণ তার মনোবল, অনমনীয় তার দৃঢ়তা,অদম্য তার সাহস। একইসঙ্গে প্রখর বিশ্লেষণ শক্তি, প্রচুর পড়াশোনা। কত ধরনের রহস্যের যে জট খুলেছেন তিনি, মোকাবিলা করেছেন কত রকমের প্রতিকূল পরিস্থিতির,গিয়েছেন কত যে নতুন জায়গায়- তার ইয়ত্তা নেই। সঙ্গে কিশোর সন্তু ওরফে সুনন্দ যে কিনা প্রতিটি অভিযানের সাক্ষী।ফেলুদার যেমন তোপসে, অনেকটা সেইরকমই কাকাবাবুর কাহিনীতে সন্তু।

রহস্য আর অ্যাডভেঞ্চার এ ভরা অসাধারণ একটি বই। এবং এই বইটার সবথেকে ভাল দিক হচ্ছে বইটি বাংলা তথা গোটা বিশ্বের ইতিহাস সম্পর্কে বিভিন্ন তথ্যবহুল।
কাকাবাবু একজন অবসরপ্রাপ্ত সরকারি কর্মকর্তা। একটি অ্যাকসিডেন্ট এ সে তার একটি পা হারায়। কিন্তু তাতে থেমে থাকেনি তার রহস্য অনুসন্ধান। একা সব কাজ পারেন না বলে তার ভাইপো সন্তু কে নিয়ে যান বিভিন্ন রহস্য উদঘাটনে। তাদের দুজনের এরকম ই কিছু রোমহর্ষক অ্যাডভেঞ্চার এর কাহিনি রহ্যেছে এই বই টি তে।
ভালো একটি অবসর পার করার জন্য এই বইটি সত্যি ই অসাধারন।

কিশোর সাহিত্য সবসময় আমার পছন্দের তালিকায় উপরের দিকে রয়েছে। সন্তু এবং কাকাবাবুর এ্যাডভেঞ্চারগুলো প্রথম যখন পড়ি তখন কিশোর বয়স প্রায় পেরিয়ে গেছি। তবুও অন্যরকম এক ভালোলাগায় মোহিত হয়ে ছিলাম।

I got the book as gift and read the "Jahaj Rohosso" story first it was interesting for me so i read the whole book in a week for some great stories and soon completed the series of six books.
The protagonist kakababu was a highly ranked govt. worker working for the Indian govt. he lost his leg in an accident when in a mission to solve a mystery you will get the story in the last series he takes his nephew Sontu with him in his missions and he also shows great intelligence with his abilities and soon becomes a partner of kakababu a detective partner :D

I read this when I was just a 8 years old boy back in 2002. This is a perfect book for juvenile readers to read. The first story 'voyonkor sundor' still reminds me of the scenic beauties of Kashmir where Santu and Kakababu solved their first mystery of king Kanishk. There are many wonderful stories as well. I want to mention is 'Paharchuray atonko' and 'Mishor Rahasya' both of which depicts the mysteris in Himalayas and Egypt which is enthralling and entertaining as well. A must read for young adults.

কখনো কাকাবাবু সিরিজটা সিরিয়ালি পড়া হয়নি। এবারি ফার্স্ট পড়লাম সিরিয়ালি। একটা ব্যাপার খেয়াল করলাম যেইটা বেশ ভাল লাগলো। সন্তু চরিত্রের ডেভেলাপমেন্ট টা। প্রথম দিকে সন্তু খানিকটা অশান্ত, খানিক্টা সংকোচ এ ভরপূর একটা ছেলে যে তার কাকাবাবুর সাথে সেরকম ক্লোজ না। অনেক কৌতুহল অনেক প্রশ্ন থাকলেও কাকাবাবুর সাথে প্রথম দিককার এডভেঞ্চারগুলা তে উচ্চবাচ্য করেনি। তবে আস্তে আস্তে সে সহজ হয়ে উঠে। যত আগাচ্ছে কাকাবাবুও সন্তুকে ভালবেসে ফেললেন যা একসময় ফর্মালিটি টাইপ একটা সম্পর্ক ছিল। ব্যাপারটা এবারি খেয়াল করলাম।ভাল লাগলো।

কিশোর উপন্যাস হিসেবে অনেক ভালো। ফেলুদার মতো ডিটেকটিভ স্টোরি মনে করে পড়লে ভালো লাগবে না। শারীরিক প্রতিবন্ধকতা থাকা স্বত্বেও একজন মানুষ কীভাবে তার মনের জোর আর বুদ্ধিমওা দিয়ে সব রহস্য উন্মোচন করে তাক লাগিয়ে দেন তার জ্বলন্ত উদাহরণ কাকাবাবু, সাথে সঙ্গী হিসেবে সন্তু ও একদম perfect. সন্তু চরিত্রের ডেভেলাপমেন্ট টা বেশ ভাল। প্রথম দিকে সন্তু খানিকটা অশান্ত, খানিক্টা সংকোচ এ ভরপূর একটা ছেলে যে তার কাকাবাবুর সাথে সেরকম ক্লোজ না। অনেক কৌতুহল অনেক প্রশ্ন থাকলেও কাকাবাবুর সাথে প্রথম দিককার এডভেঞ্চারগুলা তে উচ্চবাচ্য করেনি। তবে আস্তে আস্তে সে সহজ হয়ে উঠে।

অসাধারন কোন জায়গা যাওয়া হয়নি? ঠিক আছে কল্পনায় সন্তু হয়ে কাকাবাবু সমগ্র পড়তে শুরু করু। ব্যাস দেখবা কোথা থেকে কোথায় যাচ্ছ সেটা নিয়েও অদ্ভুত সব চিন্তা খেলে যাবে। সুনীল বাবুর লিখা, সে তো সুন্দরবনের দুঃসাহসিক অভিজানে বাঘের সম্মুখ থেকে পেড়ে খাওয়া মধুর মত। চঞ্চল্যকর অনুভুতি নিয়ে পড়া শেষ করেছি। শুনবেন অনুভুতি......!

কাকাবাবু! আপনাকে নিয়ে অনেককিছু লেখার আছে। সময় করে একদিন লিখে ফেলব।

আপাতত শৈশবে অ্যাডভেঞ্চার-পিপাসা ঢুকিয়ে দেয়ার জন্য কৃতজ্ঞতা জানাই।

ক্রাচ হাতে, শুধুমাত্র অসম্ভব মনের জোরে এত অ্যাডভেঞ্চার করা লোক বিশ্বসাহিত্যে বিরল। পাঠকের মানসিক দৃঢ়তা সমৃদ্ধ হতে বাধ্য।

প্রতিটি গল্পইম উপভোগ্য। তবে জোজো থাকলে সেটা আরো প্রাণবন্ত হয়ে উঠে। আড়ালে সন্তুর মত কাঠখোট্টা থেকেও জোজোকে বেশি ভালো লাগে।

I read this book when I was in class 4. This book was the reason for me to be a bookworm. Sometimes, even now, I wish I were sontu!!
