Unobtrusive High school senior Nyssa Navitas simply wants to graduate school. Her plan is to spend a year living with her super hot actor bestie in Hollywood and get away from her controlling alcoholic father.
But when she finds the school’s Mr Charming, Harland Woods, unconscious on the school’s oval, she has no idea how much her simple discovery will change the course of her life. Forever.
Harland is the King of the Binuit-Namri Nation, a secretive race of energy beings from another dimension. He’s hiding out on Earth trying to avoid an arranged marriage with a girl who won’t stop until she has his throne.
Problems arise when their tutoring sessions start to blossom into something more. While Harland is preoccupied with trying to keep their relations secret, Nyssa’s life is about to change, forcing one of them to make a life and death decision.
A keen fan of stories that leave you wondering after you have closed the book, Acacia has been making up stories most of her life.
Her favourite quote is: Surrender who you are for who you want to become and this message is strong in her books, her characters evolving and changing to become something else.
My thoughts: I liked Nyssa's character a lot. She felt like a real teenage girl with her insecurities and confidence problems. She was a definite misfit. I also loved that despite her life being that bad, she never gave up. Harland was cute at the beginning of the book, then he became confusing and then annoying by the end of the book. I get Nyssa's indecisiveness because she was a teenager but what was his problem? The novel felt like it was just being dragged after 3/4 of its length. The rest was just repetition. What I would have liked was more information as well as some scenes set in Harland's homeland. I guess the author's going to bring it up in the next book but it would have been more interesting to see some of it in this one. Harland's family seemed to weave in and out of scenes uselessly. The whole idea of energy beings and that a kiss could bind them for eternity was intriguing. I'll definitely look up the sequel.
I LOVED this bk!Nyssa is strong and really independent, and Harland is really cool and mysterious. They r awesome! Plz tell me wen ur nxt bk is coming out?????? I can barely wait:) Great book!
I got copies of the three books in this trilogy free on a special Christmas offer on Smashwords. It is YA, not something I normally read but I enjoyed the first book, Pulse and was keen to keep reading. It certainly appealed to an older audience. I read all three over three days. The premise of entities of energy from the Realm of Benuit-Namri living on earth unknown to the human population was intriguing. The problems arose when they interacted, as seventeen year old Nyssa discovered when she found herself attracted to fellow student Harland, King of Benuit-Namri, who preferred earth to his home nation. Rules and politics came into play. The characters were interesting and the writing was generally good. There were a few errors in Pulse - missing words and an occasional wrong word (spellcheck not properly used perhaps) but not enough to distract. Unfortunately, this was not the case in the second and third books, Glimmer and Shine. There the problems got progressively worse with a great many careless and annoying errors. Still I wanted to see how things turned out. The story still held up and was interesting - until the last half of book three, Shine. It was as if the author had so many ideas she didn't want to let any of them go and had to stuff them all in, regardless of whether they added anything of value to the story or not. The ending, when it came, was a let down. This trilogy just needs some good editing to make it shine as the story is certainly there.
I don't normally read YA fiction, buy this book was recommended to me as "different" and it is. The author has created an original paranormal world without the done-to-death vampires which have become so predictable in fiction, and it is a fascinating world. The main characters, Nyssa and Harland are intriguing from the beginning because there is a mystery to each of their natures that unfolds as the book progresses. Nyssa's difficult background has made her strong and feisty, but there is something else about her that the Binuit Namri being, Harland, can sense but doesn't understand. They are drawn to each other, despite the odds being against them. As their relationship develops, the world of the Binuit Namri is gradually revealed and I look forward to finding out more about these supernatural beings as the series continues. The ending of the book is a real cliff hanger and I am now hanging out for the next book in the series. I'd love to see this story on film. It would make a great movie!
At first, I was leary of this book because I was afraid it was going to be more science fiction than fantasy. However, once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down and wanted to start the next one immediately. The story was great and I really liked Nyssa but Harland could be confusing and annoying at times but I still liked his character alot. I loved the way the 2 narrations as well and that it switched back and forth between Harland and Nyssa. At times, it felt a little bit disjointed and I think the author needs to change her words some as Nyssa is always "blurting" which makes me think she is not thinking through her conversations and is always screaming. But overall, the story is quite good and I enjoyed the plot and characters. Can't wait to see what happens next. Thank for the chance to review.
I really enjoyed this book, my daughter read it prior to me and she raved over it! So I just had to try it and well, I LOVED IT! Right from the beginning my interest was peaked wondering who or what Harland was, and what Nyssa’s part was in what Harland was experiencing.
I could identify with Nyssa, she appeared at first as a normal, shy unassunming high schooler, but after becoming involked with Harland, I truly enjoyed Nyssa’s blossoming, showing that she was a strong and I enjoyed her straight forwardness and evolving confidence.
I also enjoyed the romance which budded and grew between the two main characters, and the action that was intermixed erupting into a sharp cliffhanger, which left me wanting more!
I fully recommend this book and I cannot wait for the second one!
I have to say I like Pulse more than I thought I would considering it was free. The beginning started of a little slow but by the end I was fully invested. I loved main character Nyssa. She seem smart and reacted in mostly believable ways for a teenage girl eventhough there were a few things I thought she should have questioned more. I found Harland to be kind of shallow at first but throughout the book the questions of why he is the way he is slowly begin to be answered. I think there is a lot more to come for him especially. The ending was a good cliffhanger, although it might seem predictable to some. Overall, I have a ton of questions that still need to be answered, but I am very interested in where the next book will tAke theses two.
I liked this book a lot. Nyssa is such a strong character, she has been through a lot and is basically raising herself. Her relationship with her best friend is really sweet. They have basically been each others crutches for many years until he went away. I hope to see more of him in the next book. I loved the attraction and interactions between Nyssa and Harland. The suspense will keep you reading until your done. The cliff hanger at the end is really making the wait for the next book torturous, I need the next book now! So excited to see what happens next.
I do admit, once i started, I can't stop reading it. I finished it in a day. Though there were some flaws. Like the too much use of the word 'glare' or the different-kinds-of-faces-face. And they seem to be always whispering. But overall itwas good. And it has a major cliffhanger. I really want to read the next book, NOW. So I'm giving it 2.5 stars
It seemed somewhat slow and it wasn't until the last few pages that it got really exciting. I guess I'm getting a little tired of reading YA books where the girl isn't popular, the guy is, she wants nothing to do with him but after being around him for a day or so she's madly in love with him. The story was somewhat interesting and I liked the characters.
