Beyond Time #3

Saving Grace

Rate this book
Grace finds herself four hundred years in the past, in the bed of the man who has haunted her. A man she barely knows but who, with just one kiss, filled the empty space that had been her shattered heart.

‘Haunting Grace’, ‘Changing Grace’ and ‘Saving Grace’ have been published in short story form to allow readers the opportunity to sample Ms Marshall’s work. These three books are part of a much larger piece of work; the ‘Highland Secret Series’.

‘Beyond Time’ is a compilation of the three ‘Grace’ books and is the second book in the ‘Highland Secret Series’. ‘Beyond Time’ will soon be available in both ebook and paperback format.

The first book in the ‘Highland Secret Series’ is ‘When Fate Dictates’; a full 90 000 word novel set in the Scottish Highlands and York and is available as an ebook and paperback.

The third book of the series, ‘Entwined’, is due for release shortly and will also be available in ebook and paperback format.

Elizabeth Marshall is the pen name of the author of the ‘Highland Secret Series’. She was born on Christmas Eve at St Mary’s Hospital, at the Marianhill Monastery, in the province of Natal, South Africa.

Elizabeth grew up in a small village called Hillcrest surrounded by a large Scottish farming family.

Her primary education was delivered by Nuns from the Monastery in which she was born. The teaching that Elizabeth received during her primary school days provided an invaluable foundation and grounding.

Smiling, Elizabeth recalls a gift, presented to her by Sister Domianis at the end of a school year. It was a prayer card and on it was simply written the word – Patience.

Through secondary school and into adult-hood, Elizabeth’s life centred on a love of reading, music, writing and history.
A hopeless romantic and dreamer with a head full of stories, Elizabeth wanted desperately to write.

Many real adventures later and Elizabeth is now living in the land of her ancestors and telling the stories she was born to tell.

I just finished the 3rd book of this amazing series. I could not put it down. Had to keep reading to see what next would happen.

This has been such a captivating story and I have really grown quite fond of Grace and Robert. Elizabeth Marshall has taken us on quite a trip of intrigue with these two. The supernatural and history are just great.

Grace has awaken 400 years in the pass. She is not sure if she is awake, dreaming or if she has died. Also what scares her is she
is in love with a man she hardly knows him except for the dreams that she has had of him and the picture that hangs in her room.

She feels she has lost everything and just prays that she will wake up soon. Grace has been looking for someone who will love her and accept her. Robert seems to be one This is something I believe we all look for in our lives.

I do hope Elizabeth will let this go on and we learn more about Grace and Robert.

This series was amazing!!! It was such a wonderful story and I'm so grateful that I found it. I loved seeing how the story unfolded and absolutely fell in love with the characters. This series is the first one that I read by Elizabeth Marshall, but it won't be my last. She is a great writer, and I now consider myself a fan of her work. I definitely recommend this series, and I know you will love it. :)

Grace fears for her daughter Jennie, whom she lift behind in a future life, 400 years in the future. She leaves messages for her future/past self and her friends, so that they can save Jennie.

I was again was bored. The writing is good, the characters are good, the plot is good. I just didn't connect with this series for some reason.
All the books are short stories. They each take about 2 hours or less to read. That is why I read them. I wanted something quick and easy to read before bed.

HAUNTING GRACE, CHANGING GRACE and SAVING GRACE are three short stories that together comprise a novella. At the time of writing this review, they are all free to download on Kindle (UK), so I thought I’d give them a whirl. As they are all essentially three parts of one story, I’ve found it easier to review them as one. Each are a quick read, and I read each in the space of an hour. So if you fancy something a little bit different one evening, they’re worth picking it up.

The stories follow Grace, a woman escaping her manipulative and abusive vicar husband. Grace is a brave women with a sad past, who also begins to wonder if she’s starting to lose her mind when she begins to see the ghost of local legend Robert Hamilton. The three stories follow her starting anew, being haunted and afraid she’s losing her sanity, so hold onto your hats… a bit of crazy time travel.

The writing did feel a bit clumsy at times, the flow not always as smooth as it could have been. But by the second story this had either improved or I had got used to the author’s style. It made me wonder if this was perhaps the author’s first piece of writing, as it did just feel stilted in certain sections.

HAUNTING GRACE builds the tension quite nicely, you get a real sense of spooky mystery around the ghost that is plaguing Grace and her loneliness. CHANGING GRACE moves on as she comes to terms with the hauntings, but more and more begins to question her sanity.

She was going to have to register with a doctor; there was nothing else for it. [...] She couldn’t possibly be allowed to roam the streets in this condition. She was a danger to herself and everyone around her.

You feel sorry for Grace, but also a little irritated by how everyone else seems to willingly accept the hauntings and also the belief that Grace is somehow going to travel through time.

Then of course comes SAVING GRACE and we’re transported to the 17th century. Enter the real Robert Hamilton and the anticipated love story. The love story was nice, even if the chemistry was perhaps not as smoking as I would have liked. I enjoyed seeing Grace get her happy ever after. Although, perhaps there is a subsequent story planned but I felt somewhat disappointed about how the threads regarding Grace’s daughter were left.

VERDICT:

The stories were an ok read, but if I’m honest not the best I’ve ever picked up. I enjoyed the ghostly aspects of the narrative. Normally a lover of time-travel romances, I felt this aspect was under-developed. Overall I felt like it just needed stepping up a gear and the writing could have been smoother. But never-the-less I did not begrudge my reading time either.

Saving Grace:

Robert has saved Grace from the snow and freezing to death. She wakes up in his bed with him in the room trying to figure out who she is. She is completely stunned. She has to be dead or still asleep in the snow dreaming. Robert reassures her this is real and gets her to tell him her story.
Grace has no clue what to do. She is four hundred years in the past. She doesn’t fit into this world. Robert assures her that he will keep her safe. So Grace attempts to be a part of his world. When they go to his posting house, Grace tries to help. While she cleans a room she is threatened by a man staying at the house. Robert throws him out feeling guilty that he didn’t protect Grace. Grace is overwhelmed with everything life has thrown at her. Her abusive marriage, leaving her daughter, traveling back in time, landing and trying to fit into four hundred years in the past is almost too much.
Robert is patient and understanding. He has been dreaming about her for a while now. He welcomes her with open arms. He wants to protect her and has every intention of marrying her. He helps her come up with a plan to save her daughter four hundred years in the future. Life can definitely take quite the turn.
This is the third and last book in the series. These three short stories introduce Grace and show how she came to time travel. This whole series was about empowerment for Grace. She left an abusive situation, but was able to find love, even if she had to go back in time.
I love how the characters were open minded and accepting of each other. Robert invited her into his life knowing that she was what he wanted.
It was a great journey to watch Grace come into her own, fight her fears and truly meet the love of multiple lifetimes. This was a sweet love story with a paranormal twist. Grace ends up exactly where she is supposed to be. A great read. I give it a 4 out of 5.

This is the last short story book in the Beyond Time Series. These books are the first I have read from the author Elizabeth Marshall. I have to say I can't wait to read more from her and just added the other book she wrote on my to read list.

In this last installment we find Grace finding little notes she has left herself from 400 years in the past. We see her getting ready for the travel back in time because of her own advice sent 400 years before. On her way back from shopping for the things she will need in the 1700's, Grace is caught in a horrible snow storm. Just when she thinks she will die out in the storm, she travels back in time and Robert Hamilton is waiting for her. The rest of the book was about her adjusting to the 1700's. Some parts felt rushed but again this is a short story so some things have to be rushed. The entire series happens in a span of a week and I have to say it was executed nicely.

I do have to mention that I thought this last book was and bits and pieces of the other two resonated a lot with Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. There were some similarities and not just because it involved an English married woman who travels 400 years to the past. There were other similarities but I will leave you to form your own opinion.

I think this is a nice read for anyone. It's not a scary read. It's more of a cuddle up against the fire/ radiator ;-) read. It's a fast read and if anyone just wants to fit it in, I think you should.

A historical time travel, w massive insta-love. And I so was not ok with Grace leaving her daughter in the future with her abusive ex-husband. I dont know how old her daughter was but she couldn't have been that old unless Grace had her hella young.

In saving grace, Grace ends up in Robert's arms and they try to make sense of how she was able to go back 400 years.

If I have any complaint about this series it is that it is just too short. there are many story lines here to be explored and it would be great if Elizabeth gave it a try
